1 Timothy 3

1 This saying is trustworthy: whoever aspires to the office of bishop desires a noble task.	1 Fidelis sermo : si quis episcopatum desiderat, bonum opus desiderat.
2 Therefore, a bishop must be irreproachable, married only once, temperate, self-controlled, decent, hospitable, able to teach,	2 Oportet ergo episcopum irreprehensibilem esse, unius uxoris virum, sobrium, prudentem, ornatum, pudicum, hospitalem, doctorem,
3 not a drunkard, not aggressive, but gentle, not contentious, not a lover of money.	3 non vinolentum, non percussorem, sed modestum : non litigiosum, non cupidum, sed
4 He must manage his own household well, keeping his children under control with perfect dignity;	4 suæ domui bene præpositum : filios habentem subditos cum omni castitate.
5 for if a man does not know how to manage his own household, how can he take care of the church of God?	5 Si quis autem domui suæ præesse nescit, quomodo ecclesiæ Dei diligentiam habebit ?
6 He should not be a recent convert, so that he may not become conceited and thus incur the devil's punishment.	6 Non neophytum : ne in superbiam elatus, in judicium incidat diaboli.
7 He must also have a good reputation among outsiders, so that he may not fall into disgrace, the devil's trap.	7 Oportet autem illum et testimonium habere bonum ab iis qui foris sunt, ut non in opprobrium incidat, et in laqueum diaboli.
8 Similarly, deacons must be dignified, not deceitful, not addicted to drink, not greedy for sordid gain,	8 Diaconos similiter pudicos, non bilingues, non multo vino deditos, non turpe lucrum sectantes :
9 holding fast to the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience.	9 habentes mysterium fidei in conscientia pura.
10 Moreover, they should be tested first; then, if there is nothing against them, let them serve as deacons.	10 Et hi autem probentur primum : et sic ministrent, nullum crimen habentes.
11 Women, similarly, should be dignified, not slanderers, but temperate and faithful in everything.	11 Mulieres similiter pudicas, non detrahentes, sobrias, fideles in omnibus.
12 Deacons may be married only once and must manage their children and their households well.	12 Diaconi sint unius uxoris viri, qui filiis suis bene præsint, et suis domibus.
13 Thus those who serve well as deacons gain good standing and much confidence in their faith in Christ Jesus.	13 Qui enim bene ministraverint, gradum bonum sibi acquirent, et multam fiduciam in fide, quæ est in Christo Jesu.
14 I am writing you about these matters, although I hope to visit you soon.	14 Hæc tibi scribo, sperans me ad te venire cito :
15 But if I should be delayed, you should know how to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of truth.	15 si autem tardavero, ut scias quomodo oporteat te in domo Dei conversari, quæ est ecclesia Dei vivi, columna et firmamentum veritatis.
16 Undeniably great is the mystery of devotion, Who was manifested in the flesh, vindicated in the spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed to the Gentiles, believed in throughout the world, taken up in glory.	16 Et manifeste magnum est pietatis sacramentum, quod manifestatum est in carne, justificatum est in spiritu, apparuit angelis, prædicatum est gentibus, creditum est in mundo, assumptum est in gloria.
