NEW AMERICAN BIBLEVULGATA
1 With three things I am delighted, for they are pleasing to the LORD and to men: Harmony among brethren, friendship among neighbors, and the mutual love of husband and wife.1 In tribus placitum est spiritui meo,
quæ sunt probata coram Deo et hominibus :
2 Three kinds of men I hate; their manner of life I loathe indeed: A proud pauper, a rich dissembler, and an old man lecherous in his dotage.2 concordia fratrum,
et amor proximorum,
et vir et mulier bene sibi consentientes.
3 What you have not saved in your youth, how will you acquire in your old age?3 Tres species odivit anima mea,
et aggravor valde animæ illorum :
4 How becoming to the gray-haired is judgment, and a knowledge of counsel to those on in years!4 pauperem superbum, divitem mendacem,
senem fatuum et insensatum.
5 How becoming to the aged is wisdom, understanding and prudence to the venerable!5 Quæ in juventute tua non congregasti,
quomodo in senectute tua invenies ?
6 The crown of old men is wide experience; their glory, the fear of the LORD.6 Quam speciosum canitiei judicium,
et presbyteris cognoscere consilium !
7 There are nine who come to my mind as blessed, a tenth whom my tongue proclaims: The man who finds joy in his children, and he who lives to see his enemies' downfall.7 Quam speciosa veteranis sapientia,
et gloriosus intellectus et consilium !
8 Happy is he who dwells with a sensible wife, and he who plows not like a donkey yoked with an ox. Happy is he who sins not with his tongue, and he who serves not his inferior.8 Corona senum multa peritia,
et gloria illorum timor Dei.
9 Happy is he who finds a friend and he who speaks to attentive ears.9 Novem insuspicabilia cordis magnificavi :
et decimum dicam in lingua hominibus :
10 He who finds wisdom is great indeed, but not greater than he who fears the LORD.10 homo qui jucundatur in filiis,
vivens et videns subversionem inimicorum suorum.
11 Fear of the LORD surpasses all else. its possessor is beyond compare.11 Beatus qui habitat cum muliere sensata,
et qui lingua sua non est lapsus,
et qui non servivit indignis se.
12 Worst of all wounds is that of the heart, worst of all evils is that of a woman.12 Beatus qui invenit amicum verum,
et qui enarrat justitiam auri audienti.
13 Worst of all sufferings is that from one's foes, worst of all vengeance is that of one's enemies:13 Quam magnus qui invenit sapientiam et scientiam !
sed non est super timentem Dominum.
14 No poison worse than that of a serpent, no venom greater than that of a woman.14 Timor Dei super omnia se superposuit.
15 With a dragon or a lion I would rather dwell than live with an evil woman.15 Beatus homo cui donatum est habere timorem Dei :
qui tenet illum, cui assimilabitur ?
16 Wickedness changes a woman's looks, and makes her sullen as a female bear.16 Timor Dei initium dilectionis ejus :
fidei autem initium agglutinandum est ei.
17 When her husband sits among his neighbors, a bitter sigh escapes him unawares.17 Omnis plaga tristitia cordis est,
et omnis malitia nequitia mulieris.
18 There is scarce any evil like that in a woman; may she fall to the lot of the sinner!18 Et omnem plagam, et non plagam videbit cordis :
19 Like a sandy hill to aged feet is a railing wife to a quiet man.19 et omnem nequitiam, et non nequitiam mulieris :
20 Stumble not through woman's beauty, nor be greedy for her wealth;20 et omnem obductum, et non obductum odientium :
21 The man is a slave, in disgrace and shame, when a wife supports her husband.21 et omnem vindictam, et non vindictam inimicorum.
22 Depressed mind, saddened face, broken heart--this from an evil wife. Feeble hands and quaking knees-- from a wife who brings no happiness to her husband.22 Non est caput nequius super caput colubri,
23 In woman was sin's beginning, and because of her we all die.23 et non est ira super iram mulieris.
Commorari leoni et draconi placebit,
quam habitare cum muliere nequam.
24 Allow water no outlet, and be not indulgent to an erring wife.24 Nequitia mulieris immutat faciem ejus :
et obcæcat vultum suum tamquam ursus,
et quasi saccum ostendit.
In medio proximorum ejus
25 If she walks not by your side, cut her away from you.25 ingemuit vir ejus,
et audiens suspiravit modicum.
26 Brevis omnis malitia super malitiam mulieris :
sors peccatorum cadat super illam.
27 Sicut ascensus arenosus in pedibus veterani,
sic mulier linguata homini quieto.
28 Ne respicias in mulieris speciem,
et non concupiscas mulierem in specie.
29 Mulieris ira, et irreverentia,
et confusio magna.
30 Mulier si primatum habeat,
contraria est viro suo.
31 Cor humile, et facies tristis,
et plaga cordis, mulier nequam.
32 Manus debiles et genua dissoluta,
mulier quæ non beatificat virum suum.
33 A muliere initium factum est peccati,
et per illam omnes morimur.
34 Non des aquæ tuæ exitum, nec modicum :
nec mulieri nequam veniam prodeundi.
35 Si non ambulaverit ad manum tuam,
confundet te in conspectu inimicorum.
36 A carnibus tuis abscinde illam,
ne semper te abutatur.
