NEW AMERICAN BIBLENEW JERUSALEM
The man who remains stiff-necked and hates rebuke will be crushed suddenly beyond cure.1 Whoever is stiff-necked under reproof wil be suddenly and irremediably broken.
When the just prevail, the people rejoice; but when the wicked rule, the people groan.2 When the upright are on the increase, the people rejoice; when the wicked are in power, the peoplegroan.
He who loves wisdom makes his father glad, but he who consorts with harlots squanders his wealth.3 The lover of Wisdom makes his father glad, but the patron of prostitutes fritters his wealth away.
By justice a king gives stability to the land; but he who imposes heavy taxes ruins it.4 A king gives a country stability by justice, an extortioner brings it to ruin.
The man who flatters his neighbor is spreading a net under his feet.5 Whoever flatters his companion spreads a net for his feet.
The wicked man steps into a snare, but the just man runs on joyfully.6 In the sin of the wicked lies a snare, but the upright exults and rejoices.
The just man has a care for the rights of the poor; the wicked man has no such concern.7 The upright understands the cause of the weak, the wicked has not the wit to understand it.
Arrogant men set the city ablaze, but wise men calm the fury.8 Scoffers set a city in ferment, but the wise moderate anger.
If a wise man disputes with a fool, he may rage or laugh but can have no peace.9 Let someone wise argue with a fool, anger and good humour alike wil be wasted.
Bloodthirsty men hate the honest man, but the upright show concern for his life.10 The bloodthirsty hate the honest, but the upright seek them out.
The fool gives vent to all his anger; but by biding his time, the wise man calms it.11 The fool blurts out every angry feeling, but the wise subdues and restrains them.
If a ruler listens to lying words, his servants all become wicked.12 When a ruler listens to false reports, al his ministers wil be scoundrels.
The poor and the oppressor have a common bond: the LORD gives light to the eyes of both.13 Poor and oppressor are found together, Yahweh gives light to the eyes of both.
If a king is zealous for the rights of the poor, his throne stands firm forever.14 The king who judges the weak with equity sees his throne set firm for ever.
The rod of correction gives wisdom, but a boy left to his whims disgraces his mother.15 The stick and the reprimand bestow wisdom, a young man left to himself brings shame on his mother.
When the wicked prevail, crime increases; but their downfall the just will behold.16 When the wicked are on the increase, sin multiplies, but the upright wil witness their downfal .
Correct your son, and he will bring you comfort, and give delight to your soul.17 Correct your child, and he wil give you peace of mind; he will delight your soul.
Without prophecy the people become demoralized; but happy is he who keeps the law.18 Where there is no vision the people get out of hand; happy are they who keep the law.
By words no servant can be trained; for he understands what is said, but obeys not.19 Not by words is a slave corrected: even if he understands, he will take no notice.
Do you see a man hasty in his words? More can be hoped for from a fool!20 You see someone too ready of speech? There is more to be hoped for from a fool!
If a man pampers his servant from childhood, he will turn out to be stubborn.21 If a slave is pampered from childhood, he wil prove ungrateful in the end.
An ill-tempered man stirs up disputes, and a hotheaded man is the cause of many sins.22 The hot-head provokes disputes, someone in a rage commits al sorts of sins.
Man's pride causes his humiliation, but he who is humble of spirit obtains honor.23 Pride brings humiliation, whoever humbles himself will win honour.
The accomplice of a thief is his own enemy: he hears himself put under a curse, yet discloses nothing.24 To hear the curse and disclose nothing is to share with the thief and to hate oneself.
The fear of man brings a snare, but he who trusts in the LORD is safe.25 To be afraid of human beings is a snare, whoever trusts in Yahweh is secure.
Many curry favor with the ruler, but the rights of each are from the LORD.26 Many people seek a ruler's favour, but the rights of each come from Yahweh.
The evildoer is an abomination to the just, and he who walks uprightly is an abomination to the wicked.27 Abhorrent to the upright is the sinful, abhorrent to the wicked is one whose way is straight.
