Proverbs 20

1 Wine is arrogant, strong drink is riotous; none who goes astray for it is wise.	1 Il vino è schernitore, la bevanda inebriante è tumultuosa; chiunque se ne inebria non è saggio.
2 The dread of the king is as when a lion roars; he who incurs his anger forfeits his life.	2 Lo sdegno del re è come il ruggito del leone; chi lo irrita rischia la vita.
3 It is honorable for a man to shun strife, while every fool starts a quarrel.	3 È vanto per l’uomo schivare le contese ma chiunque è stolto vi s’immischia.
4 In seedtime the sluggard plows not; when he looks for the harvest, it is not there.	4 Il pigro non ara d’autunno; durante la messe va in cerca ma inutilmente.
5 The intention in the human heart is like water far below the surface, but the man of intelligence draws it forth.	5 I disegni nel cuore dell’uomo sono acque profonde; ma l’uomo intelligente sa attingerle.
6 Many are declared to be men of virtue: but who can find one worthy of trust?	6 Molti vantano la propria bontà, ma chi trova un uomo fidato?
7 When a man walks in integrity and justice, happy are his children after him!	7 Chi cammina con integrità è giusto beati i suoi figli dopo di lui!
8 A king seated on the throne of judgment dispels all evil with his glance.	8 Il re che siede sul trono del giudizio, dissipa ogni male con il suo sguardo.
9 Who can say, "I have made my heart clean, I am cleansed of my sin"?	9 Chi può dire: «Io ho il cuore mondo, sono puro da ogni peccato»?
10 Varying weights, varying measures, are both an abomination to the LORD.	10 Doppio peso, doppia efa: tutti e due sono in abominio a Jahvè.
11 Even by his manners the child betrays whether his conduct is innocent and right.	11 Già dalle azioni del fanciullo si può conoscere se pura se pura e retta sarà la sua condotta.
12 The ear that hears, and the eye that sees-- the LORD has made them both.	12 L’orecchio per udire, l’occhio per vedere: tutti e due li ha fatti Jahvè.
13 Love not sleep, lest you be reduced to poverty; eyes wide open mean abundant food.	13 Non amare il sonno se non vuoi impoverire; apri gli occhi e avrai pane a sazietà.
14 "Bad, bad!" says the buyer; but once he has gone his way, he boasts.	14 «Robaccia, robaccia» dice il compratore: ma appena si allontana, se ne vanta.
15 Like gold or a wealth of corals, wise lips are a precious ornament.	15 C'è l’oro e ci sono molte perle, ma sono più preziose le labbra assennate.
16 Take his garment who becomes surety for another, and for strangers yield it up!	16 Prendi pure il vestito di chi ha dato cauzione per un altro e prendilo in pegno per gli estranei,
17 The bread of deceit is sweet to a man, but afterward his mouth will be filled with gravel.	17 Pane frodato è saporito all’uomo, ma poi la sua bocca si trova piena di ghiaia.
18 Plans made after advice succeed; so with wise guidance wage your war.	18 Rafforza i tuoi disegni prendendo consiglio: fa’ la guerra con molta prudenza!
19 A newsmonger reveals secrets; so have nothing to do with a babbler!	19 Chi va sparlando rivela i segreti; non far comunella con chi è ciarliero.
20 If one curses his father or mother, his lamp will go out at the coming of darkness.	20 Chi maledice il padre e la madre, si spegnerà la sua fiaccola in mezzo alle tenebre.
21 Possessions gained hastily at the outset will in the end not be blessed.	21 L’eredità agognata troppo presto in principio non sarà benedetta alla fine.
22 Say not, "I will repay evil!" Trust in the LORD and he will help you.	22 Non dire: «Mi vendicherò del male»; confida in Jahvè e ti salverà.
23 Varying weights are an abomination to the LORD, and false scales are not good.	23 Doppio peso è in abominio a Jahvè e la bilancia falsa non è cosa buona.
24 Man's steps are from the LORD; how, then, can a man understand his way?	24 I passi dell’uomo li dirige Jahvè; perciò, che capisce l’uomo della sua strada?
25 Rashly to pledge a sacred gift is a trap for a man, or to regret a vow once made.	25 È un laccio per l’uomo dir subito: «Sacro»; e, dopo aver fatto il voto, pentirsene.
26 A wise king winnows the wicked, and threshes them under the cartwheel.	26 Un re sapiente passa al vaglio gli empi, e gira sopra di loro la ruota.
27 A lamp from the LORD is the breath of man; it searches through all his inmost being.	27 Lo spirito dell’uomo è una fiaccola di Jahvè, che illumina tutti i penetrali del cuore.
28 Kindness and piety safeguard the king, and he upholds his throne by justice.	28 Bontà e fermezza conservano il re, e nella giustizia fonda il trono.
29 The glory of young men is their strength, and the dignity of old men is gray hair.	29 La forza è vanto dei giovani; la canizie è l’onore dei vecchi.
30 Evil is cleansed away by bloody lashes, and a scourging to the inmost being.	30 Fare ferita che sanguina è rimedio al male; così i colpi che feriscono l’intimo del cuore.
