NEW AMERICAN BIBLENEW JERUSALEM
A wise son loves correction, but the senseless one heeds no rebuke.1 A wise child listens to a father's discipline, a cynic wil not listen to reproof.
From the fruit of his words a man eats good things, but the treacherous one craves violence.2 The fruit of the mouth provides a good meal, but the soul of the treacherous feeds on violence.
He who guards his mouth protects his life; to open wide one's lips brings downfall.3 A guard on the mouth makes life secure, whoever talks too much is lost.
The soul of the sluggard craves in vain, but the diligent soul is amply satisfied.4 The idler hungers but has no food; hard workers get their fill.
Anything deceitful the just man hates, but the wicked brings shame and disgrace.5 The upright hates a lying word, but the wicked slanders and defames.
Virtue guards one who walks honestly, but the downfall of the wicked is sin.6 Uprightness stands guard over one whose way is honest, sin causes the ruin of the wicked.
One man pretends to be rich, yet has nothing; another pretends to be poor, yet has great wealth.7 There are some who, on nothing, pretend to be rich, some, with great wealth, pretend to be poor.
A man's riches serve as ransom for his life, but the poor man heeds no rebuke.8 The ransom for life is a person's wealth; but the poor wil not hear the reproof.
The light of the just shines gaily, but the lamp of the wicked goes out.9 The light of the upright is joyful, the lamp of the wicked goes out.
The stupid man sows discord by his insolence, but with those who take counsel is wisdom.10 Insolence breeds only disputes, wisdom lies with those who take advice.
Wealth quickly gotten dwindles away, but amassed little by little, it grows.11 A sudden fortune wil dwindle away, accumulation little by little is the way to riches.
Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a wish fulfilled is a tree of life.12 Hope deferred makes the heart sick, desire fulfil ed is a tree of life.
He who despises the word must pay for it, but he who reveres the commandment will be rewarded.13 Contempt for the word is self-destructive, respect for the commandment wins salvation.
The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life, that a man may avoid the snares of death.14 The teaching of the wise is a life-giving fountain for eluding the snares of death.
Good sense brings favor, but the way of the faithless is their ruin.15 Good sense wins favour, but the way of the treacherous is hard.
The shrewd man does everything with prudence, but the fool peddles folly.16 Anyone of discretion acts by the light of knowledge, the fool parades his fol y.
A wicked messenger brings on disaster, but a trustworthy envoy is a healing remedy.17 A bad messenger fal s into misfortune, a trusty messenger brings healing.
Poverty and shame befall the man who disregards correction, but he who heeds reproof is honored.18 Whoever rejects discipline wins poverty and scorn; for anyone who accepts correction: honour.
Lust indulged starves the soul, but fools hate to turn from evil.19 Desire fulfil ed is sweet to the soul; fools are loth to turn -- from evil.
Walk with wise men and you will become wise, but the companion of fools will fare badly.20 Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, whoever mixes with fools wil be ruined.
Misfortune pursues sinners, but the just shall be recompensed with good.21 Evil wil pursue the sinner, but good wil reward the upright.
The good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children, but the wealth of the sinner is stored up for the just.22 The good bequeaths a heritage to children's children, the wealth of the sinner is stored away for theupright.
A lawsuit devours the tillage of the poor, but some men perish for lack of a law court.23 Though the farms of the poor yield much food, some perish for lack of justice.
He who spares his rod hates his son, but he who loves him takes care to chastise him.24 Whoever fails to use the stick hates his child; whoever is free with correction loves him.
When the just man eats, his hunger is appeased; but the belly of the wicked suffers want.25 The upright eats to the full, the bel y of the wicked goes empty.
