For the director. Do not destroy. A miktam of David, when Saul sent people to watch his house and kill him. | 1 Unto the end. For those who will be changed, with the inscription of a title, of David himself, for instruction: |
Rescue me from my enemies, my God; lift me out of reach of my foes. | 2 when he set fire to Mesopotamia of Syria and Sobal, and Joab turned back and struck Idumea, in the valley of the salt pits, twelve thousand men. |
Deliver me from evildoers; from the bloodthirsty save me. | 3 O God, you have rejected us, and you have ruined us. You became angry, and yet you have been merciful to us. |
They have set an ambush for my life; the powerful conspire against me. For no offense or misdeed of mine, LORD, | 4 You have moved the earth, and you have disturbed it. Heal its breaches, for it has been moved. |
for no fault they hurry to take up arms. Come near and see my plight! | 5 You have revealed to your people difficulties. You have made us drink the wine of remorse. |
You, LORD of hosts, are the God of Israel! Awake! Punish all the nations. Have no mercy on these worthless traitors. Selah | 6 You have given a warning sign to those who fear you, so that they may flee from before the face of the bow, so that your beloved may be delivered. |
Each evening they return, growling like dogs, prowling the city. | 7 Save me with your right hand, and hear me. |
Their mouths pour out insult; sharp words are on their lips. They say: "Who is there to hear?" | 8 God has spoken in his holy place: I will rejoice, and I will divide Shechem, and I will measure the steep valley of the tabernacles. |
You, LORD, laugh at them; you deride all the nations. | 9 Gilead is mine, and Manasseh is mine. And Ephraim is the strength of my head. Judah is my king. |
My strength, for you I watch; you, God, are my fortress, | 10 Moab is the cooking pot of my hope. Into Idumea, I will extend my shoe. To me, the foreigners have been made subject. |
my loving God. | 11 Who will lead me into the fortified city? Who will lead me all the way to Idumea? |
May God go before me, and show me my fallen foes. Slay them, God, lest they deceive my people. Shake them by your power; Lord, our shield, bring them down. | 12 Will not you, O God, who has rejected us? And will not you, O God, go out with our armies? |
For the sinful words of their mouths and lips let them be caught in their pride. For the lies they have told under oath | 13 Grant us help from tribulation. For salvation from man is empty. |
destroy them in anger, destroy till they are no more. Then people will know God rules over Jacob, yes, even to the ends of the earth. Selah | 14 In God, we will act virtuously. And those who trouble us, he will lead to nothing. |
Each evening they return, growling like dogs, prowling the city.
They roam about as scavengers; if they are not filled, they howl.
But I shall sing of your strength, extol your love at dawn, For you are my fortress, my refuge in time of trouble.
My strength, your praise I will sing; you, God, are my fortress, my loving God. |
