1 Whoever might vainly hope to do so need only see him to be overthrown.	1 « Io non sarò così crudele da eccitarlo. Chi infatti può resistere alla mia faccia?
2 Is he not relentless when aroused; who then dares stand before him?	2 Chi m'ha dato per il primo chè io gli abbia a rendere? Tutto ciò che è sotto il cielo è mio.
3 Who has assailed him and come off safe-- Who under all the heavens?	3 Non lo risparmierò nonostante le sue parole potenti e le sue suppliche.
4 I need hardly mention his limbs, his strength, and the fitness of his armor.	4 Chi scoprirà il disopra della sua corazza? Chi entrerà nel mezzo della sua gola?
5 Who can strip off his outer garment, or penetrate his double corselet?	5 Chi aprirà le porte della sua faccia? Sulla chiostra dei suoi denti sta il terrore;
6 Who can force open the doors of his mouth, close to his terrible teeth?	6 il suo corpo è come di scudi fusi e coperto di squame ben serrate insieme:
7 Rows of scales are on his back, tightly sealed together;	7 l'una è unita all'altra, e tra esse non passa neppure un fil d'aria:
8 They are fitted each so close to the next that no space intervenes;	8 l'una aderisce all'altra, si tengono strette senza mai separarsi.
9 So joined one to another that they hold fast and cannot be parted.	9 Il suo starnuto è splendore di fuoco, i suoi occhi sono come le ciglia dell'aurora.
10 When he sneezes, light flashes forth; his eyes are like those of the dawn.	10 Dalla sua bocca escono vampe come tizzoni di fuoco acceso.
11 Out of his mouth go forth firebrands; sparks of fire leap forth.	11 Dalle sue narici esce fumo come da caldaia bollente sul fuoco.
12 From his nostrils issues steam, as from a seething pot or bowl.	12 Il suo alito fa bruciare i carboni, e una fiamma esce dalla sua bocca.
13 His breath sets coals afire; a flame pours from his mouth.	13 Nel suo collo sta la forza e davanti a lui va la miseria.
14 Strength abides in his neck, and terror leaps before him.	14 Le parti sue carnose sono ben compatte, lanciando contro di lui i fulmini non andranno altrove,
	15 il suo cuore è duro come la pietra, saldo come l'incudine del fabbro.
16 His heart is hard as stone; his flesh, as the lower millstone.	16 Quando si alza su, gli angeli tremano e sbigottiti si purificano.
17 When he rises up, the mighty are afraid; the waves of the sea fall back.	17 Contro di lui nulla può la spada, la lancia e la corazza;
18 Should the sword reach him, it will not avail; nor will the spear, nor the dart, nor the javelin.	18 il ferro è per lui come paglia, il bronzo come legno tarlato.
19 He regards iron as straw, and bronze as rotten wood.	19 L'arciere non lo metterà in fuga; per lui son di stoppa le pietre della fionda,
20 The arrow will not put him to flight; slingstones used against him are but straws.	20 la mazza la crederà un fil di paglia e si burlerà di chi brandisce la lancia.
21 Clubs he esteems as splinters; he laughs at the crash of the spear.	21 Esso avrà sotto di sè i raggi del sole. Si stenderà sopra l'oro come sul fango.
22 His belly is sharp as pottery fragments; he spreads like a threshing sledge upon the mire.	22 Farà bollire come una caldaia il profondo del maro, lo renderà come unguenti in ebollizione.
23 He makes the depths boil like a pot; the sea he churns like perfume in a kettle.	23 Si lascia dietro una scia luminosa e farà apparire canuto l'abisso.
24 Behind him he leaves a shining path; you would think the deep had the hoary head of age.	24 Non v'è sulla terra potenza chè gli possa esser paragonata, perchè fu fatto per non aver paura di nessuno.
25 Upon the earth there is not his like, intrepid he was made.	25 Guarda in faccia i più eccelsi, è re su tutti i figli della superbia ».
