1 כי כל כהן גדול הלקוח מתוך בני אדם מפקד הוא בעבור בני אדם בעניני אלהים להקריב מנחה וזבח על החטאים	1 Every high priest is taken from among human beings and is appointed to act on their behalf inrelationships with God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins;
2 והוא יכול לחמל על השגגים והתעים בהיותו גם הוא ידוע חלי	2 he can sympathise with those who are ignorant or who have gone astray, because he too is subject tothe limitations of weakness.
3 אשר על כן חיב להקריב על החטאים גם בעד העם גם בעד נפשו	3 That is why he has to make sin offerings for himself as wel as for the people.
4 ואת הגדלה הזאת לא יקח איש לעצמו רק הקרוא לה מאת האלהים כמו אהרן	4 No one takes this honour on himself; it needs a cal from God, as in Aaron's case.
5 כן גם המשיח לא כבד את עצמו להיות כהן גדול כי אם האמר אליו בני אתה אני היום ילדתיך	5 And so it was not Christ who gave himself the glory of becoming high priest, but the one who said tohim: You are my Son, today I have fathered you,
6 כמו שאמר גם במקום אחר אתה כהן לעולם על דברתי מלכי צדק	6 and in another text: You are a priest for ever, of the order of Melchizedek.
7 אשר בימי היותו בבשר הקריב תפלות ותחנונים בצעקה גדולה ובדעות לפני מי שיכול להושיעו ממות ויעתר לו מפני יראתו	7 During his life on earth, he offered up prayer and entreaty, with loud cries and with tears, to the onewho had the power to save him from death, and, winning a hearing by his reverence,
8 ואף כי היה הבן למד מענותו לשמוע	8 he learnt obedience, Son though he was, through his sufferings;
9 ואחרי אשר השלם היה ממציא תשועת עולמים לכל שמעיו	9 when he had been perfected, he became for al who obey him the source of eternal salvation
10 והאלהים קרא לו כהן גדול על דברתי מלכי צדק	10 and was acclaimed by God with the title of high priest of the order of Melchizedek.
11 על זאת יש לנו לדבר הרבה וקשות לבאר לכם במלין יען כי כבדו אזניכם	11 On this subject we have many things to say, and they are difficult to explain because you have grownso slow at understanding.
12 כי תחת אשר היה ראוי לכם לפי ארך הזמן להיות מלמדים עתה מן הצרך לשוב וללמד אתכם עקרי ראשית דברי אלהים ונצרכתם לחלב ולא למאכל בריא	12 Indeed, when you should by this time have become masters, you need someone to teach you al overagain the elements of the principles of God's sayings; you have gone back to needing milk, and not solid food.
13 כי כל אשר מאכלו חלב איננו מבין בדבר צדק כי עודנו עולל	13 Truly, no one who is stil living on milk can digest the doctrine of saving justice, being stil a baby.
14 אך לשלמים המאכל הבריא אשר על פי ההרגל יש להם חושים מנסים להבדיל בין טוב לרע	14 Solid food is for adults with minds trained by practice to distinguish between good and bad.
