BIBBIA MARTINI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Non ti vantare di cosa, che abbia da essere, mentre non sai quel, che possa produrre il dì vegnente.	1 Do not congratulate yourself about tomorrow, since you do not know what today wil bring forth.
2 La bocca altrui, e non la tua dia lode a te; l'estraneo, e non le tue proprie labbra.	2 Let someone else sing your praises, but not your own mouth, a stranger, but not your own lips.
3 Grave è il sasso, e pesante l'arena; ma l'ira dello stolto pesa più dell'uno, e dell'altra.	3 Heavy is the stone, weighty is the sand; heavier than both -- a grudge borne by a fool.
4 L'ira, e il furore, che scoppia, non lascian luogo alla misericordia; ma all'impeto dell'invidioso chi potrà reggere?	4 Cruel is wrath, overwhelming is anger; but jealousy, who can withstand that?
5 E migliore un'aperta riprensione, che un amore che si nasconde.	5 Better open reproof than feigned love.
6 Sono migliori le ferite, che vengono da chi ama, che i falsi baci di chi odia.	6 Trustworthy are blows from a friend, deceitful are kisses from a foe.
7 L'anima satolla calpesta il favo di miele; ma l'anima affamata prende per dolce anche l'amaro.	7 The gorged throat revolts at honey, the hungry throat finds al bitterness sweet.
8 L'uomo che abbandona il suo posto, è come l'uccello, che scappa dal suo nido:	8 Like a bird that strays from its nest, so is anyone who strays away from home.
9 L'unguento, e la varietà degli odori, rallegra il cuore, e i buoni consigli dell'amico danno conforto all'anima.	9 Oil and perfume gladden the heart, and the sweetness of friendship rather than self-reliance.
10 Non abbandonare l'amico tuo, e l'amico del padre tuo: e non andare a casa del tuo fratello nel giorno di tua afflizione. Giova più un vicino, che ti sta presso, che un fratello assente.	10 Do not give up your friend or your father's friend; when trouble comes, do not go off to your brother'shouse, better a near neighbour than a distant brother.
11 Applicati alla sapienza, figliuol mio, e consola il mio cuore: affinchè tu possa rispondere a chi ti screditasse.	11 Learn to be wise, my child, and gladden my heart, that I may have an answer for anyone who insultsme.
12 L'uom prudente alla vista del male, va a nascondersi: gli imprudenti passano avanti, e ne soffrono il danno.	12 The discreet sees danger and takes shelter, simpletons go ahead and pay the penalty.
13 Prendi la veste di colui, che è entrato mallevadore per uno straniero, e levagli il pegno in grazia dei forestieri.	13 Take the man's clothes! He has gone surety for a stranger. Take a pledge from him, for personsunknown.
14 Colui che prima del giorno va a benedire ad alta voce il suo prossimo, sarà simile a chi lo maledice.	14 Whoever at dawn loudly blesses his neighbour -- it will be reckoned to him as a curse.
15 Il tetto, che per cui passa l'acqua nella fredda stagione, e la donna, che piatisce, sono due cose somiglianti.	15 The dripping of a gutter on a rainy day and a quarrelsome woman are alike;
16 Chi vuoi ritenerla è come chi vuoi tenere il vento, e strigner l'olio nella sua destra.	16 whoever can restrain her, can restrain the wind, and take a firm hold on grease.
17 Il ferro assottiglia il ferro, e l'uomo assottiglia l'ingegno del suo amico.	17 Iron is sharpened by iron, one person is sharpened by contact with another.
18 Chi custodirà la sua ficaia ne mangerà il frutto, e chi custodisce il suo padrone sarà onorato.	18 Whoever tends the fig tree eats its figs, whoever looks after his master wil be honoured.
19 Come nelle acque risplendono le facce di quelli, che vi si mirano, cosi i cuori degli uomini sono manifesti ai sapienti.	19 As water reflects face back to face, so one human heart reflects another.
20 L'inferno, e la morte mai dicono, basta; cosi gli occhi degli uomini sono insaziabili.	20 Sheol and Perdition are never satisfied, insatiable, too, are human eyes.
21 Come nella fornace ai prova l'agento, e l'oro nel grogiuolo; cosi è provato l'uomo per le parole di chi lo lauda. Il cuore dell'iniquo agogna al male: il cuore diritto va cercando prudenza.	21 A furnace for silver, a foundry for gold: a person is worth what his reputation is worth.
22 Quando ben tu pestassi lo stolto nel mortaio, come si fa dell'orzo, battendolo col pestello, non gli leveresti la sua stoltezza.	22 Pound a fool in a mortar, among grain with a pestle, his fol y wil not leave him.
23 Abbi esatta conoscenza delle tue pecorelle, e bada attentamente al tuo gregge:	23 Know your flocks' condition well, take good care of your herds;
24 Perocché tu non potrai sempre farlo: ma ti sarà data una corona perpetua.	24 for riches do not last for ever, crowns do not hand themselves on from age to age.
25 I prati sono aperti, e spuntano le verdi erbe, e il fieno de' monti è raccolto.	25 The grass once gone, the aftergrowth appearing, the hay gathered in from the mountains,
26 Gli agnelli ti vestiranno, e i capretti pagheranno il campo.	26 you should have lambs to clothe you, goats to buy you a field,
27 Contentati del latte di capra per tuo cibo, per sostentamento di tua famiglia, e per vitto delle tue serve.	27 goat's milk sufficient to feed you, to feed your household and provide for your serving girls.
