1 Non ti vantare di cosa, che abbia da essere, mentre non sai quel, che possa produrre il dì vegnente.	1 Boast not of tomorrow, for you know not what any day may bring forth.
2 La bocca altrui, e non la tua dia lode a te; l'estraneo, e non le tue proprie labbra.	2 Let another praise you--not your own mouth; Someone else--not your own lips.
3 Grave è il sasso, e pesante l'arena; ma l'ira dello stolto pesa più dell'uno, e dell'altra.	3 Stone is heavy, and sand a burden, but a fool's provocation is heavier than both.
4 L'ira, e il furore, che scoppia, non lascian luogo alla misericordia; ma all'impeto dell'invidioso chi potrà reggere?	4 Anger is relentless, and wrath overwhelming-- but before jealousy who can stand?
5 E migliore un'aperta riprensione, che un amore che si nasconde.	5 Better is an open rebuke than a love that remains hidden.
6 Sono migliori le ferite, che vengono da chi ama, che i falsi baci di chi odia.	6 Wounds from a friend may be accepted as well meant, but the greetings of an enemy one prays against.
7 L'anima satolla calpesta il favo di miele; ma l'anima affamata prende per dolce anche l'amaro.	7 One who is full, tramples on virgin honey; but to the man who is hungry, any bitter thing is sweet.
8 L'uomo che abbandona il suo posto, è come l'uccello, che scappa dal suo nido:	8 Like a bird that is far from its nest is a man who is far from his home.
9 L'unguento, e la varietà degli odori, rallegra il cuore, e i buoni consigli dell'amico danno conforto all'anima.	9 Perfume and incense gladden the heart, but by grief the soul is torn asunder.
10 Non abbandonare l'amico tuo, e l'amico del padre tuo: e non andare a casa del tuo fratello nel giorno di tua afflizione. Giova più un vicino, che ti sta presso, che un fratello assente.	10 Your own friend and your father's friend forsake not; but if ruin befalls you, enter not a kinsman's house. Better is a neighbor near at hand than a brother far away.
11 Applicati alla sapienza, figliuol mio, e consola il mio cuore: affinchè tu possa rispondere a chi ti screditasse.	11 If you are wise, my son, you will gladden my heart, and I will be able to rebut him who tuants me.
12 L'uom prudente alla vista del male, va a nascondersi: gli imprudenti passano avanti, e ne soffrono il danno.	12 The shrewd man perceives evil and hides; simpletons continue on and suffer the penalty.
13 Prendi la veste di colui, che è entrato mallevadore per uno straniero, e levagli il pegno in grazia dei forestieri.	13 Take his garment who becomes surety for another, and for the sake of a stranger, yield it up!
14 Colui che prima del giorno va a benedire ad alta voce il suo prossimo, sarà simile a chi lo maledice.	14 When one greets his neighbor with a loud voice in the early morning, a curse can be laid to his charge.
15 Il tetto, che per cui passa l'acqua nella fredda stagione, e la donna, che piatisce, sono due cose somiglianti.	15 For a persistent leak on a rainy day the match is a quarrelsome woman.
16 Chi vuoi ritenerla è come chi vuoi tenere il vento, e strigner l'olio nella sua destra.	16 He who keeps her stores up a stormwind; he cannot tell north from south.
17 Il ferro assottiglia il ferro, e l'uomo assottiglia l'ingegno del suo amico.	17 As iron sharpens iron, so man sharpens his fellow man.
18 Chi custodirà la sua ficaia ne mangerà il frutto, e chi custodisce il suo padrone sarà onorato.	18 He who tends a fig tree eats its fruit, and he who is attentive to his master will be enriched.
19 Come nelle acque risplendono le facce di quelli, che vi si mirano, cosi i cuori degli uomini sono manifesti ai sapienti.	19 As one face differs from another, so does one human heart from another.
20 L'inferno, e la morte mai dicono, basta; cosi gli occhi degli uomini sono insaziabili.	20 The nether world and the abyss are never satisfied; so too the eyes of men.
21 Come nella fornace ai prova l'agento, e l'oro nel grogiuolo; cosi è provato l'uomo per le parole di chi lo lauda. Il cuore dell'iniquo agogna al male: il cuore diritto va cercando prudenza.	21 As the crucible tests silver and the furnace gold, so a man is tested by the praise he receives.
22 Quando ben tu pestassi lo stolto nel mortaio, come si fa dell'orzo, battendolo col pestello, non gli leveresti la sua stoltezza.	22 Though you should pound the fool to bits with the pestle, amid the grits in a mortar, his folly would not go out of him.
23 Abbi esatta conoscenza delle tue pecorelle, e bada attentamente al tuo gregge:	23 Take good care of your flocks, give careful attention to your herds;
24 Perocché tu non potrai sempre farlo: ma ti sarà data una corona perpetua.	24 For wealth lasts not forever, nor even a crown from age to age.
25 I prati sono aperti, e spuntano le verdi erbe, e il fieno de' monti è raccolto.	25 When the grass is taken away and the aftergrowth appears, and the mountain greens are gathered in,
26 Gli agnelli ti vestiranno, e i capretti pagheranno il campo.	26 The lambs will provide you with clothing, and the goats will bring the price of a field,
27 Contentati del latte di capra per tuo cibo, per sostentamento di tua famiglia, e per vitto delle tue serve.	27 And there will be ample goat's milk to supply you, to supply your household, and maintenance for your maidens.
