1 Luego los israelitas reanudaron la marcha y fueron a acampar en las estepas de Moab, el otro lado del Jordán, a la altura de Jericó.	1 And they set out and made camp in the plains of Moab, across the Jordan, where Jericho is situated.
2 Balac, hijo de Sipor, vio todo lo que los israelitas habían hecho a los amorreos,	2 Then Balak, the son of Zippor, seeing all that Israel had done to the Amorite,
3 y los moabitas sintieron un gran temor a la vista de ese pueblo tan numeroso. Atemorizados por la presencia de los israelitas,	3 and that the Moabites had great fear of him, and that they were not able to bear his assault,
4 los moabitas dijeron a los ancianos de Madián: «Ahora esta turba va a devorarlo todo a nuestro alrededor como un buey devora la hierba del campo». Entonces Balac, hijo de Sipor, que era rey de Moab en aquel tiempo,	4 said to those greater by birth of Midian: “So will this people wipe away all those who are dwelling within our borders, in the same way that the ox is accustomed to tear out grass, all the way to the roots.” At that time, he was king of Moab.
5 envió unos mensajeros a Balaam, hijo de Beor –que vivía en Petor, junto al Eufrates, en el país en Petor, junto al Eufrates, en el país de los descendientes de Amav– para que le hicieran esta invitación: «Un pueblo que salió de Egipto y cubrió toda la tierra se ha establecido frente a mí.	5 Therefore, he sent messengers to Balaam, the son of Beor, a seer who lived above the river of the land of the sons of Ammon, to call him, and to say: “Behold, a people has gone forth from Egypt, which has covered the face of the earth. They are encamped opposite me.
6 Ven, por favor, y maldíceme a este pueblo, porque es más fuerte que yo. Tal vez así podré derrotarlo y expulsarlo del país. Porque yo sé que el que tú bendices, queda bendecido, y el que maldices, queda maldecido».	6 Therefore, come and curse this people, for they are stronger than I am. If only, in some way, I might be able to strike them and to drive them from my land. For I know that he whom you bless shall be blessed, and he whom you curse shall be cursed.”
7 Los ancianos de Moab y de Madián partieron, llevando la retribución para el adivino. Cuando se presentaron a Balaam y le transmitieron el mensaje de Balac,	7 And the elders of Moab, and those greater by birth of Midian, continued on, holding the price of divination in their hands. And when they had come to Balaam, and had explained to him all the words of Balak,
8 Balaam les respondió: «Pasen aquí la noche, y yo les daré la respuesta que el Señor me inspire». Entonces los jefes de Moab se quedaron con Balaam.	8 he responded, “Remain for this night, and I will answer with whatever the Lord will say to me.” And while they stayed with Balaam, God came and said to him,
9 Pero Dios se manifestó a Balaam y le dijo: «¿Quiénes son esos hombres que están contigo?».	9 “What do these men want with you?”
10 Balaam respondió a Dios: «Balac, hijo de Sipor, rey de Moab, me envió este mensaje:	10 He responded, “Balak, the son of Zippor, the king of the Moabites has sent to me,
11 «Aquí hay un pueblo que salió de Egipto y cubrió toda la tierra. Por eso, ven a maldecírmelo. Tal vez así podré combatir contra él y expulsarlo».	11 saying: ‘Behold, a people, which has gone forth from Egypt, has covered the face of the earth. Come and curse them, so that, in some way, I may be able to fight them and drive them away.’ ”
12 Dios dijo a Balaam: «No vayas con ellos ni maldigas a ese pueblo, porque está bendecido».	12 And God said to Balaam, “Do not go with them, and do not curse the people, for they are blessed.”
13 A la mañana siguiente, Balaam se levantó y dijo a los jefes enviados por Balac: «Vuélvanse a su país, porque el Señor me prohíbe acompañarlos».	13 And he, rising up in the morning, said to the leaders, “Go into your own land, for the Lord has prohibited me from going with you.”
14 Entonces los jefes de Moab partieron, y cuando estuvieron de regreso dijeron a Balac: «Balaam se niega a venir con nosotros».	14 Returning, the leaders said to Balak, “Balaam was not willing to come with us.”
15 Entonces Balac envió otros jefes, más numerosos y distinguidos que los primeros.	15 Again, he sent many more persons, and these were more noble than those he had sent before.
16 Ellos se presentaron a Balaam y le dijeron: «Así habla Balac, hijo de Sipor: «Por favor, no te niegues a venir en mi ayuda.	16 And when these had come to Balaam, they said: “So says Balak, the son of Zippor. Do not hesitate to come to me.
17 Yo te colmaré de honores y haré todo lo que me digas. Te ruego que vengas y me maldigas a este pueblo».	17 For I am ready to honor you, and whatever you would want, I shall give to you. Come and curse this people.”
18 Pero Balaam respondió a los servidores de Balac: «Aunque Balac me diera su casa llena de planta y oro, yo no podría transgredir, ni siguiera en lo más mínimo, una orden del Señor, mi Dios.	18 Balaam responded: “Even if Balak were to give to me his own house, filled with silver and gold, I still would not be able to change the word of the Lord my God, neither to say more, nor to say less.
19 Con todo, quédense aquí también ustedes esta noche, y veré qué me dice el Señor esta vez».	19 I beg you to remain for this night also, so that I may know what the Lord will answer me again.”
20 Durante la noche, Dios se manifestó a Balaam y le dijo: «Si esta gente ha venido a buscarte, puedes ir con ellos. Pero no hagas nada fuera de lo que yo te ordene».	20 Therefore, God came to Balaam in the night, and said to him: “If these men have arrived to call you, then rise up and go with them; yet only in so far as you shall do what I will command you.”
21 Por la mañana, Balaam se levantó, ensilló su asna y partió junto con los jefes de Moab.	21 Balaam rose up in the morning, and saddling his donkey, he set out with them.
22 Pero su partida encendió la ira de Dios, y el Angel del Señor se interpuso en el camino para cerrarle el paso. Balaam iba montado en su asna y lo acompañaban dos muchachos.	22 And God was angry. And an Angel of the Lord stood in the way opposite Balaam, who was sitting on the donkey, and he had two servants with him.
23 Cuando el asna vio al Angel del Señor parado en el camino, con la espada desenvainada en su mano, se apartó y se fue por el campo. Pero Balaam la castigó para hacerla volver al camino.	23 The donkey, discerning that the Angel was standing in the way with a drawn sword, turned herself from the road and went through a field. And when Balaam beat her and intended to return her to the path,
24 El Angel del Señor se paró entonces en un sendero angosto, que pasaba por los viñedos y estaba rodeado de los dos lados por un cerco.	24 the Angel stood in a narrow place between the two walls, with which the vineyards were enclosed.
25 Al verlo, el asna se fue contra el cerco y apretó el pie de Balaam que la castigó nuevamente.	25 And the donkey, seeing this, drew herself close to the wall and scraped the foot of the rider. So he beat her again.
26 Una vez más, el Angel del Señor se adelantó y fue a colocarse en un lugar tan estrecho, que imposible desviarse a la derecha o a la izquierda.	26 And, nevertheless, the Angel passing on to a narrow place, where one would not be able to deviate either to the right or to the left, stood to meet him.
27 Cuando el asna lo vio, se echó al suelo debajo de Balaam, y este, enfurecido, la golpeó con su bastón.	27 And when the donkey had seen the Angel standing there, she fell under the feet of the rider, who, being angry, struck her sides more vehemently with a club.
28 Entonces el Señor abrió la boca del asna, y ella, dijo a Balaam: «¿Qué te hice para que me golpearas así tres veces?».	28 And the Lord opened the mouth of the donkey, and she said: “What have I done to you? Why do strike you me, behold now, for the third time?”
29 «¡Te estás burlando de mí!, respondió Balaam. Si tuviera una espada en mi mano, te mataría ahora mismo».	29 Balaam responded, “Because you have deserved it, and you have mistreated me. If only I had a sword, so that I might pierce you.”
30 El asna le respondió: «¿Acaso yo no soy tu asna, la que siempre has montado hasta el día de hoy? ¿Acostumbro yo a tratarte de ese modo?». El respondió: «No».	30 The donkey said: “Am not I your animal, on which you have always been accustomed to sit, even until this present day? Tell me, when did I ever do the same thing to you.” But he said, “Never.”
31 El Señor abrió los ojos de Balaam, y este vio al Angel del Señor parado en la camino, con la espada desenvainada en su mano; se inclinó y lo adoró con el rostro en tierra.	31 Immediately, the Lord opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the Angel standing in the way with a drawn sword, and he reverenced him prone on the ground.
32 El Angel del Señor le dijo: «¿Por qué le has pegado tres veces a tu asna? Era yo el que te cerraba el paso, porque tu viaje me disgusta.	32 And the Angel said to him: “Why did you beat your donkey three times? I have come to be an adversary to you, because your way is perverse and contrary to me.
33 Ella me vio y se apartó de mí tres veces. Hizo muy bien en apartarse, porque de los contrario yo te hubiera matado, mientras que a ella la hubiera dejado con vida».	33 And unless the donkey had turned aside from the way, allowing a place for my opposition, I would have killed you, and she would have lived.”
34 Balaam dijo al Angel del Señor: «He pecado, porque no sabía que tú estabas apostado delante de mí en el camino. Si esto te desagrada, ahora mismo regreso».	34 Balaam said: “I have sinned, not knowing that you stood against me. And now, if it displeases you for me to continue on, I will return.”
35 El Angel del Señor respondió a Balaam: «Ve con estos hombres, pero dirás solamente lo que yo te indique». Y Balaam se fue con los jefes que le había enviado Balac.	35 The Angel said, “Go with them, but be careful not to speak anything other than what I shall instruct you.” And so, he went with the leaders.
36 Cuando Balac supo que Balaam estaba por llegar, fue a encontrarlo en Ar Moab, sobre la frontera del Arnón, en el límite de su territorio,	36 And when Balak had heard it, he went out to meet him in a town of the Moabites, which is situated at the furthest borders of Arnon.
37 y le dijo: «Yo te mandé a llamar urgentemente. ¿Por qué no querías venir? ¿Acaso no dispongo de medios para colmarte de honores?».	37 And he said to Balaam: “I sent messengers to call you. Why did you not come to me immediately? Was it because I am not able to pay the cost for your arrival?”
38 Entonces Balaam respondió a Balac: «Aquí me tienes. Pero, ¿qué puedo decir yo ahora? Sólo diré la palabra que Dios ponga en mi boca».	38 He answered him: “Behold, here I am. Am I able to speak anything other than what God will put into my mouth?”
39 Luego Balaam se fue con Balac. Llegados a Quiriat Jusot,	39 Therefore, they continued on together, and they arrived at a city, which was at the furthest borders of his kingdom.
40 Balac inmoló vacas y ovejas y se las envió a Balaam y lo hizo subir a Bamot Baal, desde donde pudo ver a una parte del pueblo.	40 And after Balak had killed oxen and sheep, he sent the gifts to Balaam, and to the leaders who were with him.
	41 Then, when morning arrived, he led him to the heights of Baal, and he gazed upon the most distant portions of the population.
