EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS	DOUAI-RHEIMS
1 Luego los israelitas reanudaron la marcha y fueron a acampar en las estepas de Moab, el otro lado del Jordán, a la altura de Jericó.	1 And they went forward and encamped in the plains of Moab, over against where Jericho is situate beyond the Jordan.
2 Balac, hijo de Sipor, vio todo lo que los israelitas habían hecho a los amorreos,	2 And Balac the son of Sephor, seeing all that Israel had done to the Amorrhite,
3 y los moabitas sintieron un gran temor a la vista de ese pueblo tan numeroso. Atemorizados por la presencia de los israelitas,	3 And that the Moabites were in great fear of him, and were not able to sustain his assault,
4 los moabitas dijeron a los ancianos de Madián: «Ahora esta turba va a devorarlo todo a nuestro alrededor como un buey devora la hierba del campo». Entonces Balac, hijo de Sipor, que era rey de Moab en aquel tiempo,	4 He said to the elders of Madian: So will this people destroy all that dwell in our borders, as the ox is wont to eat the grass to the very roots. Now he was at that time king in Moab.
5 envió unos mensajeros a Balaam, hijo de Beor –que vivía en Petor, junto al Eufrates, en el país en Petor, junto al Eufrates, en el país de los descendientes de Amav– para que le hicieran esta invitación: «Un pueblo que salió de Egipto y cubrió toda la tierra se ha establecido frente a mí.	5 He sent therefore messengers to Balaam the son of Beer, a soothsayer, who dwelt by the river of the land of the children of Ammon, to call him, and to say: Behold a people is come out of Egypt, that hath covered the face of the earth, sitting over against me.
6 Ven, por favor, y maldíceme a este pueblo, porque es más fuerte que yo. Tal vez así podré derrotarlo y expulsarlo del país. Porque yo sé que el que tú bendices, queda bendecido, y el que maldices, queda maldecido».	6 Come therefore, and curse this people, because it is mightier than I: if by any means I may beat them and drive them out of my land: for I know that he whom thou shalt bless is blessed, and he whom thou shalt curse is cursed.
7 Los ancianos de Moab y de Madián partieron, llevando la retribución para el adivino. Cuando se presentaron a Balaam y le transmitieron el mensaje de Balac,	7 And the ancients of Moab, and the elders of Madian, went with the price of divination in their hands. And when they were come to Balaam, and had told him all the words of Balac:
8 Balaam les respondió: «Pasen aquí la noche, y yo les daré la respuesta que el Señor me inspire». Entonces los jefes de Moab se quedaron con Balaam.	8 He answered: Tarry here this night, and I will answer whatsoever the Lord shall say to me. And while they stayed with Balaam, God came and said to him:
9 Pero Dios se manifestó a Balaam y le dijo: «¿Quiénes son esos hombres que están contigo?».	9 What mean these men that are with thee?
10 Balaam respondió a Dios: «Balac, hijo de Sipor, rey de Moab, me envió este mensaje:	10 He answered: Balac the son of Sephor king of the Moabites hath sent to me,
11 «Aquí hay un pueblo que salió de Egipto y cubrió toda la tierra. Por eso, ven a maldecírmelo. Tal vez así podré combatir contra él y expulsarlo».	11 Saying: Behold a people that is come out of Egypt, hath covered the face of the land: come and curse them, if by any means I may fight with them and drive them away.
12 Dios dijo a Balaam: «No vayas con ellos ni maldigas a ese pueblo, porque está bendecido».	12 And God said to Balaam : Thou shalt not go with them, nor shalt thou curse the people: because it is blessed.
13 A la mañana siguiente, Balaam se levantó y dijo a los jefes enviados por Balac: «Vuélvanse a su país, porque el Señor me prohíbe acompañarlos».	13 And he rose in the morning and said to the princes: Go into your country, because the Lord hath forbid me to come with you.
14 Entonces los jefes de Moab partieron, y cuando estuvieron de regreso dijeron a Balac: «Balaam se niega a venir con nosotros».	14 The princes returning, said to Balac: Balaam would not come with us.
15 Entonces Balac envió otros jefes, más numerosos y distinguidos que los primeros.	15 Then he sent many more and more noble than he had sent before:
16 Ellos se presentaron a Balaam y le dijeron: «Así habla Balac, hijo de Sipor: «Por favor, no te niegues a venir en mi ayuda.	16 Who, when they were come to Balaam, said: Thus saith Balac the son of Sephor, Delay not to come to me:
17 Yo te colmaré de honores y haré todo lo que me digas. Te ruego que vengas y me maldigas a este pueblo».	17 For I am ready to honour thee, and will give thee whatsoever thou wilt: come and curse this people.
18 Pero Balaam respondió a los servidores de Balac: «Aunque Balac me diera su casa llena de planta y oro, yo no podría transgredir, ni siguiera en lo más mínimo, una orden del Señor, mi Dios.	18 Balaam answered: If Balac would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot alter the word of the Lord my God, to speak either more or less.
19 Con todo, quédense aquí también ustedes esta noche, y veré qué me dice el Señor esta vez».	19 I pray you to stay here this night also, that I may know what the Lord will answer me once more.
20 Durante la noche, Dios se manifestó a Balaam y le dijo: «Si esta gente ha venido a buscarte, puedes ir con ellos. Pero no hagas nada fuera de lo que yo te ordene».	20 God therefore came to Balaam in the night, and said to him: It these men be come to call thee, arise and go with them: yet so, that thou do what I shall command thee.
21 Por la mañana, Balaam se levantó, ensilló su asna y partió junto con los jefes de Moab.	21 Balaam arose in the morning, and saddling his ass went with them.
22 Pero su partida encendió la ira de Dios, y el Angel del Señor se interpuso en el camino para cerrarle el paso. Balaam iba montado en su asna y lo acompañaban dos muchachos.	22 And God was angry. And an angel of the Lord stood in the way against Balaam, who sat on the ass, and had two servants with him.
23 Cuando el asna vio al Angel del Señor parado en el camino, con la espada desenvainada en su mano, se apartó y se fue por el campo. Pero Balaam la castigó para hacerla volver al camino.	23 The ass seeing the angel standing in the way, with a drawn sword, turned herself out of the way, and went into the field. And when Balaam beat her, and had a mind to bring her again to the way,
24 El Angel del Señor se paró entonces en un sendero angosto, que pasaba por los viñedos y estaba rodeado de los dos lados por un cerco.	24 The angel stood in a narrow place between two walls, wherewith the vineyards were enclosed.
25 Al verlo, el asna se fue contra el cerco y apretó el pie de Balaam que la castigó nuevamente.	25 And the ass seeing him, thrust herself close to the wall, and bruised the foot of the rider. But he beat her again:
26 Una vez más, el Angel del Señor se adelantó y fue a colocarse en un lugar tan estrecho, que imposible desviarse a la derecha o a la izquierda.	26 And nevertheless the angel going on to a narrow place, where there was no way to turn aside either to the right hand or to the left, stood to meet him.
27 Cuando el asna lo vio, se echó al suelo debajo de Balaam, y este, enfurecido, la golpeó con su bastón.	27 And when the ass saw the angel standing, she fell under the feet of the rider: who being angry beat her sides more vehemently with a staff.
28 Entonces el Señor abrió la boca del asna, y ella, dijo a Balaam: «¿Qué te hice para que me golpearas así tres veces?».	28 And the Lord opened the mouth of the ass, and she said: What have I done to thee? Why strikest thou me, lo, now this third time?
29 «¡Te estás burlando de mí!, respondió Balaam. Si tuviera una espada en mi mano, te mataría ahora mismo».	29 Balaam answered: Because thou hast deserved it, and hast served me ill: I would I had a sword that I might kill thee.
30 El asna le respondió: «¿Acaso yo no soy tu asna, la que siempre has montado hasta el día de hoy? ¿Acostumbro yo a tratarte de ese modo?». El respondió: «No».	30 The ass said: Am not I thy beast, on which thou hast been always accustomed to ride until this present day? tell me if I ever did the like thing to thee. But he said: Never.
31 El Señor abrió los ojos de Balaam, y este vio al Angel del Señor parado en la camino, con la espada desenvainada en su mano; se inclinó y lo adoró con el rostro en tierra.	31 Forthwith the Lord opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel standing in the way with a drawn sword, and he worshipped him falling flat on the ground.
32 El Angel del Señor le dijo: «¿Por qué le has pegado tres veces a tu asna? Era yo el que te cerraba el paso, porque tu viaje me disgusta.	32 And the angel said to him: Why beatest thou thy ass these three times? I am come to withstand thee, because thy way is perverse, and contrary to me:
33 Ella me vio y se apartó de mí tres veces. Hizo muy bien en apartarse, porque de los contrario yo te hubiera matado, mientras que a ella la hubiera dejado con vida».	33 And unless the ass had turned out of the way, giving place to me who stood against thee, I had slain thee, and she should have lived.
34 Balaam dijo al Angel del Señor: «He pecado, porque no sabía que tú estabas apostado delante de mí en el camino. Si esto te desagrada, ahora mismo regreso».	34 Balaam said: I have sinned, not knowing that thou didst stand against me: and now if it displease thee that I go, I will return.
35 El Angel del Señor respondió a Balaam: «Ve con estos hombres, pero dirás solamente lo que yo te indique». Y Balaam se fue con los jefes que le había enviado Balac.	35 The angel said: Go with these men, and see thou speak no other thing than what I shall command thee. He went therefore with the princes.
36 Cuando Balac supo que Balaam estaba por llegar, fue a encontrarlo en Ar Moab, sobre la frontera del Arnón, en el límite de su territorio,	36 And when Balac heard it he came forth to meet him in a town of the Moabites, that is situate in the uttermost borders of Arnon.
37 y le dijo: «Yo te mandé a llamar urgentemente. ¿Por qué no querías venir? ¿Acaso no dispongo de medios para colmarte de honores?».	37 And he said to Balaam: I sent messengers to call thee, why didst thou not come immediately to me? was it because I am not able to reward thy coming?
38 Entonces Balaam respondió a Balac: «Aquí me tienes. Pero, ¿qué puedo decir yo ahora? Sólo diré la palabra que Dios ponga en mi boca».	38 He answered him: Lo, here I am: shall I have power to speak any other thing but that which God shall put in my mouth?
39 Luego Balaam se fue con Balac. Llegados a Quiriat Jusot,	39 So they went on together, and came into a city, that was in the uttermost borders of his kingdom.
40 Balac inmoló vacas y ovejas y se las envió a Balaam y lo hizo subir a Bamot Baal, desde donde pudo ver a una parte del pueblo.	40 And when Balac had killed oxen and sheep, he sent presents to Balaam, and to the princes that were with him.
	41 And when morning was come, he brought him to the high places of Baal, and he beheld the uttermost part of the people.
