1 David passa en revue les hommes qui étaient avec lui et il mit à leur tête des chefs de mille et des chefs de cent.	1 After mustering the troops he had with him, David placed officers in command of groups of a thousand and groups of a hundred.
2 Ensuite David divisa la troupe en trois: il confia un tiers à Joab, un tiers à Abisaï, fils de Sérouya et frère de Joab, et un tiers à Ittaï de Gat. Le roi dit à la troupe: “Moi aussi j’irai avec vous.”	2 David then put a third part of the soldiers under Joab's command, a third under command of Abishai, son of Zeruiah and brother of Joab, and a third under command of Ittai the Gittite. The king then said to the soldiers, "I intend to go out with you myself."
3 Mais la troupe répondit: “Non, ne viens pas, car si nous tournons le dos, personne n’y prêtera attention. Si la moitié d’entre nous meurt, personne n’y prêtera attention, mais toi, tu es comme dix mille d’entre nous. Il vaut mieux que tu restes en ville et que tu puisses nous porter secours.”	3 But they replied: "You must not come out with us. For if we should flee, we shall not count; even if half of us should die, we shall not count. You are equal to ten thousand of us. Therefore it is better that we have you to help us from the city."
4 Le roi leur dit: “Je ferai ce qui vous semble bon.” Il resta donc près de la porte de la ville et toute la troupe sortit par cents et par milles.	4 So the king said to them, "I will do what you think best"; and he stood by the gate as all the soldiers marched out in units of a hundred and of a thousand.
5 Le roi donna cet ordre à Joab, à Abisaï et à Ittaï: “Ménagez le jeune Absalom par égard pour moi.” Toute la troupe entendit cet ordre que le roi donnait aux chefs à propos d’Absalom.	5 But the king gave this command to Joab, Abishai and Ittai: "Be gentle with young Absalom for my sake." All the soldiers heard the king instruct the various leaders with regard to Absalom.
6 L’armée se mit en campagne et marcha à la rencontre d’Israël; la bataille se déroula dans la forêt d’Éphraïm.	6 David's army then took the field against Israel, and a battle was fought in the forest near Mahanaim.
7 Ce fut une grande défaite pour l’armée d’Israël, les serviteurs de David l’écrasèrent et elle perdit 20 000 hommes.	7 The forces of Israel were defeated by David's servants, and the casualties there that day were heavy--twenty thousand men.
8 Le combat s’étendit à tout le secteur et ce jour-là les abrupts de la forêt firent plus de morts que l’épée.	8 The battle spread out over that entire region, and the thickets consumed more combatants that day than did the sword.
9 Les serviteurs de David rencontrèrent Absalom par hasard, il était monté sur un mulet et le mulet arriva sous les branches d’un grand chêne. Sa tête se prit dans le chêne et il resta suspendu entre ciel et terre tandis que le mulet continuait sa course.	9 Absalom unexpectedly came up against David's servants. He was mounted on a mule, and, as the mule passed under the branches of a large terebinth, his hair caught fast in the tree. He hung between heaven and earth while the mule he had been riding ran off.
10 Un homme l’aperçut et il avertit Joab: “J’ai aperçu Absalom suspendu à un chêne.”	10 Someone saw this and reported to Joab that he had seen Absalom hanging from a terebinth.
11 Joab dit à celui qui lui apportait cette nouvelle: “Ainsi tu l’as vu! Pourquoi ne l’as-tu pas frappé sur-le-champ? Je t’aurais donné 10 pièces d’argent et une ceinture.”	11 Joab said to his informant: "If you saw him, why did you not strike him to the ground on the spot? Then it would have been my duty to give you fifty pieces of silver and a belt."
12 Mais l’homme répondit à Joab: “Même si j’avais dans les mains tes 1 000 pièces d’argent, je ne porterais pas la main sur le fils du roi. Devant nous tous le roi a donné cet ordre à toi, à Abisaï et à Ittaï: ‘Épargnez le jeune Absalom par égard pour moi.’	12 But the man replied to Joab: "Even if I already held a thousand pieces of silver in my two hands, I would not harm the king's son, for the king charged you and Abishai and Ittai in our hearing to protect the youth Absalom for his sake.
13 Même si je n’avais rien dit, le roi l’aurait su, et toi, tu te serais tenu à l’écart.”	13 Had I been disloyal and killed him, the whole matter would have come to the attention of the king, and you would stand aloof."
14 Joab dit: “Je perds mon temps avec toi.” Il prit dans sa main trois javelots et les enfonça dans le cœur d’Absalom qui était encore en vie dans le chêne.	14 Joab replied, "I will not waste time with you in this way." And taking three pikes in hand, he thrust for the heart of Absalom, still hanging from the tree alive.
15 Ensuite 10 jeunes gens compagnons d’armes de Joab frappèrent Absalom et l’achevèrent.	15 Next, ten of Joab's young armor-bearers closed in on Absalom, and killed him with further blows.
16 Alors Joab sonna du cor: il fit retenir la troupe et l’on cessa de poursuivre Israël.	16 Joab then sounded the horn, and the soldiers turned back from the pursuit of the Israelites, because Joab called on them to halt.
17 Ils prirent Absalom et le jetèrent dans une grande fosse au milieu de la forêt, et l’on éleva par-dessus un grand tas de pierres. Quant aux Israélites, ils avaient pris la fuite et ils étaient retournés chacun chez soi.	17 Absalom was taken up and cast into a deep pit in the forest, and a very large mound of stones was erected over him. And all the Israelites fled to their own tents.
18 De son vivant Absalom s’était élevé une stèle dans la Vallée du Roi, car il se disait: “Je n’ai pas de fils pour conserver mon nom.” Il avait donné son nom à cette pierre dressée, et aujourd’hui encore on l’appelle ‘le monument d’Absalom.’	18 During his lifetime Absalom had taken a pillar and erected it for himself in the King's Valley, for he said, "I have no son to perpetuate my name." The pillar which he named for himself is called Yadabshalom to the present day.
19 Ahimaas fils de Sadoq dit alors: “Je vais courir annoncer au roi cette bonne nouvelle, que Yahvé lui a rendu justice et l’a délivré de ses ennemis.”	19 Then Ahimaaz, son of Zadok, said, "Let me run to take the good news to the king that the LORD has set him free from the grasp of his enemies."
20 Mais Joab lui dit: “Tu ne serais pas porteur d’une bonne nouvelle aujourd’hui, tu le seras peut-être un autre jour mais aujourd’hui ce ne serait certainement pas une bonne nouvelle, puisque le fils du roi est mort.”	20 But Joab said to him: "You are not the man to bring the news today. On some other day you may take the good news, but today you would not be bringing good news, for in fact the king's son is dead."
21 Joab dit alors au Kouchite: “Va annoncer au roi ce que tu as vu.” Le Kouchite se prosterna devant Joab et partit en courant.	21 Then Joab said to a Cushite, "Go, tell the king what you have seen." The Cushite bowed to Joab and sped away.
22 Ahimaas fils de Sadoq reprit la parole et dit à Joab: “Qu’importe ce qui arrivera. Moi aussi je veux courir derrière ce Kouchite.” Joab lui dit: “Pourquoi courir mon fils? Tu n’en tireras aucune récompense.”	22 But Ahimaaz, son of Zadok, said to Joab again, "Come what may, permit me also to run after the Cushite." Joab replied: "Why do you want to run, my son? You will receive no reward."
23 Il répondit: “Peu importe, je veux courir.” Alors Joab lui dit: “Eh bien, cours.” Ahimaas partit en courant, il prit le chemin de la plaine et il devança le Kouchite.	23 But he insisted, "Come what may, I want to run." Joab said to him, "Very well." Ahimaaz sped off by way of the Jordan plain and outran the Cushite.
24 David était assis entre les deux portes, et le guetteur faisait les cent pas sur le toit de la porte, au-dessus du rempart. Il leva les yeux et aperçut un homme qui courait seul.	24 Now David was sitting between the two gates, and a lookout mounted to the roof of the gate above the city wall, where he looked about and saw a man running all alone.
25 Le guetteur cria la nouvelle au roi, qui déclara: “S’il est seul, c’est qu’il est porteur de bonne nouvelle.” L’autre pendant ce temps approchait.	25 The lookout shouted to inform the king, who said, "If he is alone, he has good news to report." As he kept coming nearer,
26 Le guetteur aperçut un autre homme qui courait derrière, il appela le portier et lui dit: “Il y a en un autre qui court aussi seul.” Le roi dit: “Celui-là aussi apporte une bonne nouvelle.”	26 the lookout spied another runner. From his place atop the gate he cried out, "There is another man running by himself." And the king responded, "He, too, is bringing good news."
27 Le guetteur reprit: “Je reconnais le premier, c’est Ahimaas fils de Sadoq, je reconnais sa façon de courir.” Le roi dit: “C’est un homme qui vaut, il apporte sûrement une bonne nouvelle.”	27 Then the lookout said, "I notice that the first one runs like Ahimaaz, son of Zadok." The king replied, "He is a good man; he comes with good news."
28 Lorsque Ahimaas fut tout près, il cria: “Salut!” Puis il se prosterna la face contre terre devant le roi. “Béni soit Yahvé ton Dieu, dit-il, il a livré les hommes qui s’étaient dressés contre mon seigneur le roi!”	28 Then Ahimaaz called out and greeted the king. With face to the ground he paid homage to the king and said, "Blessed be the LORD your God, who has delivered up the men who rebelled against my lord the king."
29 Le roi dit alors: “Le jeune Absalom est-il sauf?” Ahimaas répondit: “Lorsque ton serviteur Joab m’a envoyé, j’ai vu une grande confusion, mais je ne sais pas exactement ce qui se passait.”	29 But the king asked, "Is the youth Absalom safe?" And Ahimaaz replied, "I saw a great disturbance when the king's servant Joab sent your servant on, but I do not know what it was."
30 Le roi lui dit: “Mets-toi là et attendons.” Il se rangea de côté et attendit.	30 The king said, "Step aside and remain in attendance here." So he stepped aside and remained there.
31 Derrière lui arrivait le Kouchite; il dit: “Que mon seigneur le roi apprenne la bonne nouvelle: Yahvé t’a fait justice aujourd’hui, il t’a délivré de tous ceux qui s’étaient dressés contre toi.”	31 When the Cushite came in, he said, "Let my lord the king receive the good news that this day the LORD has taken your part, freeing you from the grasp of all who rebelled against you."
32 Le roi demanda au Kouchite: “Le jeune Absalom est-il sauf?” Le Kouchite lui répondit: “Que les ennemis de mon seigneur le roi, que tous ceux qui se dressent contre lui pour faire le mal, aient le sort de ce jeune homme.”	32 But the king asked the Cushite, "Is young Absalom safe?" The Cushite replied, "May the enemies of my lord the king and all who rebel against you with evil intent be as that young man!"
