| 1 Non son io libero (e franco)? Non son io apostolo? Non vidi io il nostro Signore Iesù Cristo? Non siete voi la mia opera nel Signore? | 1 Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? Are not you my workmanship in the Lord? |
| 2 E poniamo che io all' altre genti non sia apostolo, ma ben so che voi siete il segnacolo del mio apostolato nel Signore. | 2 If to others I am not an apostle, at least I am to you; for you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord. |
| 3 Chè la mia defensione, a coloro che mi domandano, sì è questa. | 3 This is my defense to those who would examine me. |
| 4 Non avemo noi signorìa di manducare e di bere? | 4 Do we not have the right to our food and drink? |
| 5 E non avemo signoria di pigliare mogliere, secondo che li altri apostoli e fratelli del Signore, e secondo che Pietro? | 5 Do we not have the right to be accompanied by a wife, as the other apostles and the brothers of the Lord and Cephas? |
| 6 Son io pur solo e Barnaba, che non avemo podestà ad operare queste cose? | 6 Or is it only Barnabas and I who have no right to refrain from working for a living? |
| 7 E chi è quelli che alle sue spese voglia servire (al Signore da niuno tempo)? E quale è quello che pianta la vigna, e non manduca del suo frutto? E chi pasce le turme delle pecore e non manduca del latte loro? | 7 Who serves as a soldier at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard without eating any of its fruit? Who tends a flock without getting some of the milk? |
| 8 Dicole io forse queste cose, secondo che uomo? È questo nella legge. | 8 Do I say this on human authority? Does not the law say the same? |
| 9 Chè egli è scritto nella legge di Moisè, che non sia legata la bocca del bue che lavora. Ora è cura a Dio delli buoi? | 9 For it is written in the law of Moses, "You shall not muzzle an ox when it is treading out the grain." Is it for oxen that God is concerned? |
| 10 Ovver dicelo egli per noi? Certo per noi (il dice e per noi) è scritto: imperò che quelli che ara dee arare con speranza (d' avere bene), e quelli che batte nell' aia sì batte con speranza d'avere frutto. | 10 Does he not speak entirely for our sake? It was written for our sake, because the plowman should plow in hope and the thresher thresh in hope of a share in the crop. |
| 11 Adunque se noi a voi avemo seminate le cose spirituali, è egli grande cosa se noi riceviamo le carnali? | 11 If we have sown spiritual good among you, is it too much if we reap your material benefits? |
| 12 E se gli altri hanno signoria sopra voi, molto maggiormente noi; ma noi non avemo usata questa signoria, ma tutte le cose si sofferiamo per non dare (piccolo) offendimento all'evangelio di Cristo. | 12 If others share this rightful claim upon you, do not we still more? Nevertheless, we have not made use of this right, but we endure anything rather than put an obstacle in the way of the gospel of Christ. |
| 13 E non sapete voi, che quelli che operano nel sacrario, che manducano di quelle cese che son del sacrario, e coloro che servono all' altare sì partècipano all' altare? | 13 Do you not know that those who are employed in the temple service get their food from the temple, and those who serve at the altar share in the sacrificial offerings? |
| 14 E così il Signore ordinò, che quelli che annunziano l' evangelio si debbano vivere dell' evangelio (e della predicazione). | 14 In the same way, the Lord commanded that those who proclaim the gospel should get their living by the gospel. |
| 15 Ma io non ho usata alcuna di queste cose; e non scrissi questo perchè sia fatto a me; chè a me fia meglio che io mora, che alcuno invanisca la mia gloria. | 15 But I have made no use of any of these rights, nor am I writing this to secure any such provision. For I would rather die than have any one deprive me of my ground for boasting. |
| 16 Che se io averò a evangelizzare, non è a me per gloria; chè la necessità mi costrinse; e guai a me, se io non averò a evangelizzare! | 16 For if I preach the gospel, that gives me no ground for boasting. For necessity is laid upon me. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel! |
| 17 E se io questo faccio volentieri, ho mercede; ma se io evangelizzo come forzato, e la spesa m'è data, che mercede n'abbo? | 17 For if I do this of my own will, I have a reward; but if not of my own will, I am entrusted with a commission. |
| 18 Adunque (sine sumptu, idest) senza lucro temporale predicherò l' evangelio di Cristo, acciò che non venga a usar male la autoritade a me concessa in l'evangelio. | 18 What then is my reward? Just this: that in my preaching I may make the gospel free of charge, not making full use of my right in the gospel. |
| 19 E certo, essendo io libero e franco, sì mi feci servo d'ogni uomo, per guadagnare molti alla fede. | 19 For though I am free from all men, I have made myself a slave to all, that I might win the more. |
| 20 E fecimi a' iudei secondo che iudeo, per guadagnare li iudei; | 20 To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews; to those under the law I became as one under the law--though not being myself under the law--that I might win those under the law. |
| 21 e a coloro, ch' erano sotto la legge, come io fossi sotto la legge, per guadagnare coloro che v'erano; e a coloro che senza legge sono, sì mi feci come se io fossi senza legge, per guadagnare coloro che stanno senza legge. | 21 To those outside the law I became as one outside the law--not being without law toward God but under the law of Christ--that I might win those outside the law. |
| 22 Son fatto infermo agl' infermi, acciò io guadagnassi gl' infermi. E son fatto tutte cose [a tutti], per fare ogni uomo salvo. | 22 To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all men, that I might by all means save some. |
| 23 Tutte le cose faccio per l' evangelio, perchè io sia partecipe dell' evangelio. | 23 I do it all for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings. |
| 24 Non sapete voi, che coloro che corrono nel corso del palio, e tutti corrono, e pure uno ha il palio? E così voi correte, che voi abbiate. | 24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners compete, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. |
| 25 E ogni uomo, che contende nella battaglia, da tutte le cose si guardano; e certo se questi il fanno, che debbono ricevere una corruttibile corona, molto maggiormente noi che la riceveremo (sempiternale e) incorruttibile. | 25 Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. |
| 26 Adunque io così corro, non come uomo incerto; e così combatto, non come quello che batte l'aere. | 26 Well, I do not run aimlessly, I do not box as one beating the air; |
| 27 E castigo il corpo mio, e recolo a servitudine; chè per la ventura, predicando io ad altrui, non diventassi reprobo (e perchè io non fossi da Dio rifiutato). | 27 but I pommel my body and subdue it, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified. |
