| 1 Figliuoli di sapienza son chiesa di giusti; e' discendenti di coloro, ubbidienza e dilezione. | 1 Listen to me your father, O children; and act accordingly, that you may be kept in safety. |
| 2 Figliuoli (diletti), udite la volontà del padre, e fate sì che voi siate salvi. | 2 For the Lord honored the father above the children, and he confirmed the right of the mother over her sons. |
| 3 Iddio onorò il padre nelli figliuoli; e udita la esaminazione e la volontade della madre, fermò ne' figliuoli. | 3 Whoever honors his father atones for sins, |
| 4 Chi ama Iddio, pregherà per li peccati suoi, e ritrarrassi da quelli, e sarà esaudito nella orazione de' dì. | 4 and whoever glorifies his mother is like one who lays up treasure. |
| 5 E sì come [chi] tesaurizza, così è colui che onora la madre sua. | 5 Whoever honors his father will be gladdened by his own children, and when he prays he will be heard. |
| 6 Colui che onora il padre suo, si rallegrerà ne' suoi figliuoli, e nella orazione sarà esaudito. | 6 Whoever glorifies his father will have long life, and whoever obeys the Lord will refresh his mother; |
| 7 Chi onora il padre suo, viverà per molto lunga vita; e chi ubbedirae il padre, refrigerae la madre. | 7 he will serve his parents as his masters. |
| 8 Chi teme Iddio, onora il padre e la madre, e quasi signori servirà coloro che lo generarono. | 8 Honor your father by word and deed, that a blessing from him may come upon you. |
| 9 In opera e in detto e in ogni pazienza onora il padre tuo, | 9 For a father's blessing strengthens the houses of the children, but a mother's curse uproots their foundations. |
| 10 acciò che sopra te vegna da Dio la benedizione, e nella fine stea ferma la sua benedizione. | 10 Do not glorify yourself by dishonoring your father, for your father's dishonor is no glory to you. |
| 11 La benedizione del padre ferma le case dei figliuoli; la maledizione della madre disturba le fondamenta. | 11 For a man's glory comes from honoring his father, and it is a disgrace for children not to respect their mother. |
| 12 Non ti vanagloriare nella ingiuria (e nella villania) del padre tuo; però ch' ella non t' è gloria, ma confusione. | 12 O son, help your father in his old age, and do not grieve him as long as he lives; |
| 13 La gloria dell' uomo si è dello onore del padre suo, e il vituperio del figliuolo è il padre sanza onore. | 13 even if he is lacking in understanding, show forbearance; in all your strength do not despise him. |
| 14 O figliuolo, ricevi la vecchiezza del padre tuo, e non lo contristare nella vita sua. | 14 For kindness to a father will not be forgotten, and against your sins it will be credited to you; |
| 15 E s' egli rinfanciullisce, passalo benignamente, e non lo spregiare nella tua forza; la limosina del padre non si dimenticherae. | 15 in the day of your affliction it will be remembered in your favor; as frost in fair weather, your sins will melt away. |
| 16 Per lo peccato della madre il bene ti sarà restituito. | 16 Whoever forsakes his father is like a blasphemer, and whoever angers his mother is cursed by the Lord. |
| 17 E in giustizia fia edificato a te, e nel die della tribulazione si ricorderae di te; e sì come nel tempo chiaro il ghiaccio si disfà, così si disfaranno li tuoi peccati. | 17 My son, perform your tasks in meekness; then you will be loved by those whom God accepts. |
| 18 Com'è di mala fama colui che abbandona il padre, e da Dio è maledetto colui che cruccia la madre! | 18 The greater you are, the more you must humble yourself; so you will find favor in the sight of the Lord. |
| 19 O figliuolo, compi l' opere tue in mansuetudine, e sarai amato sopra la fama degli uomini. | 19 . |
| 20 Quanto più tu se' maggiore, più umilia te in tutte le cose; e troverai grazia dinanzi da Dio. | 20 For great is the might of the Lord; he is glorified by the humble. |
| 21 Però ch' è la grande potenza del solo Iddio, ed è onorato dalli umili. | 21 Seek not what is too difficult for you, nor investigate what is beyond your power. |
| 22 Non cercherai cose più alte di te, e cose più forti di te non cercare; se alcune cose ti comanda Iddio, pensa quelle sempre, e in più opere non sarai sollecito. | 22 Reflect upon what has been assigned to you, for you do not need what is hidden. |
| 23 Non ti sono necessarie quelle cose, le quali sono nascose, di vedere agli occhi tuoi. | 23 Do not meddle in what is beyond your tasks, for matters too great for human understanding have been shown you. |
| 24 In cose vane e di soperchio non cercare molto, e in più opere di quelle che comandò Iddio, non sarai curioso. | 24 For their hasty judgment has led many astray, and wrong opinion has caused their thoughts to slip. |
| 25 Molte cose sopra il sentimento degli uomini sono mostrate a te. | 25 . |
| 26 La sospicione di quelli ne ingannò molti, e ritenne li sensi di coloro nella vanitade. | 26 A stubborn mind will be afflicted at the end, and whoever loves danger will perish by it. |
| 27 Il cuore duro starà male nella fine; e chi ama i pericoli, in quelli perirà. | 27 A stubborn mind will be burdened by troubles, and the sinner will heap sin upon sin. |
| 28 Il (duro) cuore ch' entra per due vie, non averae i suoi intendimenti; e l'uomo che è di malvagio cuore si scandelizzerà in quelli. | 28 The affliction of the proud has no healing, for a plant of wickedness has taken root in him. |
| 29 Lo reo cuore si graverà nel dolore; e il peccatore aggiugnerae nel peccato. | 29 The mind of the intelligent man will ponder a parable, and an attentive ear is the wise man's desire. |
| 30 Non è sanitade nella sinagoga de' superbi; lo spirito de' peccati si debarberae in quelli, e non fia inteso.. | 30 Water extinguishes a blazing fire: so almsgiving atones for sin. |
| 31 Il cuore de' savi s' intende in sapienza; e l'orecchio buono ode con ogni desiderio la sapienza. | 31 Whoever requites favors gives thought to the future; at the moment of his falling he will find support. |
| 32 Il cuore savio e intendente si ritrarrae dalli peccati; e averà felice avvenimento nelle opere della giustizia. | |
| 33 L'acqua spegne l'ardente fuoco, e la limosina resiste alli peccati. | |
| 34 E Iddio sì è difenditore di colui che rende grazia; ricordossi del passato, e nel tempo della sua tribulazione troverae fermamento. | |
