| 1 Rispondendo lo Signore a Iob della caligine, disse: | 1 Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind: |
| 2 Chi è questi, che involge le scienze nelli sermoni sanza documento? | 2 "Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge? |
| 3 Cìgniti, sì come uomo, li tuoi lombi; io addomanderò a te; rispondi a me. | 3 Gird up your loins like a man, I will question you, and you shall declare to me. |
| 4 Dove eri, quando io poneva i fondamenti alla terra? Dimostralo a me, se hai intelligenza. | 4 "Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding. |
| 5 Chi pose le misure sue, se l'hai conosciuto? ovvero chi tese sopra lei lo regolo? | 5 Who determined its measurements--surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it? |
| 6 Sopra quale cosa li piedi suoi sono fermati? Ovvero chi lasciò la pietra angolare sua, | 6 On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone, |
| 7 conciosia cosa che me lodassero insieme le stelle mattutine, e rallegrassonsi tutti i figliuoli di Dio? | 7 when the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy? |
| 8 Chi rinchiuse cogli usci lo mare, quando rompea quasi dello ventre procedente, | 8 "Or who shut in the sea with doors, when it burst forth from the womb; |
| 9 conciosia cosa ch' io ponessi lo nuvolo, suo vestimento, e involgessi quello d'oscuritade, quasi come de' panni della fanciullezza? | 9 when I made clouds its garment, and thick darkness its swaddling band, |
| 10 Io lo circondai (e intorniai quello) coi miei termini, e posi la chiavicella e gli usci. | 10 and prescribed bounds for it, and set bars and doors, |
| 11 E dissi: insino qui verrai, e non andarae più oltre, e qui ti romperai gonfiando le tue onde. | 11 and said, 'Thus far shall you come, and no farther, and here shall your proud waves be stayed? |
| 12 Or da poi il tuo nascimento comandasti al diluculo, e mostrasti all' aurora il suo luogo? | 12 "Have you commanded the morning since your days began, and caused the dawn to know its place, |
| 13 Or (non) tenesti percotendo le estremità della terra, e percotesti li malvagi di quella? | 13 that it might take hold of the skirts of the earth, and the wicked be shaken out of it? |
| 14 Sarà restituito sì come fango lo segnale : starà si come vestimento. | 14 It is changed like clay under the seal, and it is dyed like a garment. |
| 15 Sarà tolta dai malvagi la loro luce, e lo braccio alto sarà constretto. | 15 From the wicked their light is withheld, and their uplifted arm is broken. |
| 16 Or andasti tu nello profondo del mare, e nelle parti ultime dello abisso andasti? | 16 "Have you entered into the springs of the sea, or walked in the recesses of the deep? |
| 17 Or sono aperte a te le porte della morte, e le uscia tenebrose vedesti? | 17 Have the gates of death been revealed to you, or have you seen the gates of deep darkness? |
| 18 E (non) hai considerato la larghezza della terra? Dimostra a me, se hai conosciuto ogni cosa, | 18 Have you comprehended the expanse of the earth? Declare, if you know all this. |
| 19 nella quale via abita la luce, e quale sia lo luogo delle tenebre, | 19 "Where is the way to the dwelling of light, and where is the place of darkness, |
| 20 acciò che tu meni ciascuno alli suoi termini, e intenda le vie della casa sua. | 20 that you may take it to its territory and that you may discern the paths to its home? |
| 21 Sapevi tu allora, quando tu dovessi nascere? e conoscevi lo numero de' tuoi giorni? | 21 You know, for you were born then, and the number of your days is great! |
| 22 Or se' tu entrato ne' tesori della neve, ovvero li tesori della gragnuola riguardasti? | 22 "Have you entered the storehouses of the snow, or have you seen the storehouses of the hail, |
| 23 Li quali apparecchiai nel tempo del nemico, nel dì della zuffa e della battaglia? | 23 which I have reserved for the time of trouble, for the day of battle and war? |
| 24 Per la qual via si sparge la luce, e dividesi lo caldo sopra la terra? | 24 What is the way to the place where the light is distributed, or where the east wind is scattered upon the earth? |
| 25 Chi diede al grandissimo vento piovoso lo corso, e la via al sonante tuono, | 25 "Who has cleft a channel for the torrents of rain, and a way for the thunderbolt, |
| 26 acciò che piovesse sopra la terra sanza l'uomo nel deserto, dove non ha casa alcuno delli mortali, | 26 to bring rain on a land where no man is, on the desert in which there is no man; |
| 27 acciò ch' ella empisse il luogo senza via, e il desolato luogo producesse l'erba virente? | 27 to satisfy the waste and desolate land, and to make the ground put forth grass? |
| 28 Chi è padre della piova? ovvero chi generoe le cose stillate della rugiada? | 28 "Has the rain a father, or who has begotten the drops of dew? |
| 29 Di quale ventre è venuto lo ghiaccio? e lo gelo del cielo, chi lo generoe? | 29 From whose womb did the ice come forth, and who has given birth to the hoarfrost of heaven? |
| 30 Nella similitudine di pietra s' indurano l' acque, e la superficie dello abisso è constretta. | 30 The waters become hard like stone, and the face of the deep is frozen. |
| 31 Or potrai tu congiugnere le risplendenti stelle Plejade, ovvero potrai guastare lo giro dell' Orsa? (cioè uno segno celeste lo quale è appo il polo settentrionale). | 31 "Can you bind the chains of the Pleiades, or loose the cords of Orion? |
| 32 Or produci tu lo splendore nel suo tempo, e la stella vespertina sopr' a' figliuoli della terra la fai tu levare? | 32 Can you lead forth the Mazzaroth in their season, or can you guide the Bear with its children? |
| 33 Or hai conosciuto l'ordine del cielo, e poni la sua ragione nella terra? | 33 Do you know the ordinances of the heavens? Can you establish their rule on the earth? |
| 34 Or leverai fu nella nebula la tua voce, e lo impeto dell' acque coprirà te? | 34 "Can you lift up your voice to the clouds, that a flood of waters may cover you? |
| 35 Or manderai tu le saette, e anderanno, e con reverenza diranno a te: siamo presenti? | 35 Can you send forth lightnings, that they may go and say to you, 'Here we are? |
| 36 Chi pose nelle budella dell' uomo la sapienza? ovvero chi diede al gallo la intelligenza? | 36 Who has put wisdom in the clouds, or given understanding to the mists? |
| 37 Chi narrerà la ragione de' cieli, e lo canto e armonia del cielo chi farà dormire? | 37 Who can number the clouds by wisdom? Or who can tilt the waterskins of the heavens, |
| 38 Quando si fondava la polvere nella terra, e le sue parti s' ingrassavano? | 38 when the dust runs into a mass and the clods cleave fast together? |
| 39 Or piglierai tu alla lionessa la preda, e riempierai l'anima de' suoi figliuoli, | 39 "Can you hunt the prey for the lion, or satisfy the appetite of the young lions, |
| 40 quando giacciono nelle caverne, e guatano nelle spelonche? | 40 when they crouch in their dens, or lie in wait in their covert? |
| 41 Chi apparecchia al corbo la sua esca, quando li suoi figliuoli gridano a Dio vaganti, perciò che non hanno li cibi? | 41 Who provides for the raven its prey, when its young ones cry to God, and wander about for lack of food? |
