| 1 Adunque odi, Iob, le mie parole, e tutti li miei sermoni ascolta. | 1 "But now, hear my speech, O Job, and listen to all my words. |
| 2 Ecco io apro la mia bocca; e favelli la mia lingua nelle mie mascelle. | 2 Behold, I open my mouth; the tongue in my mouth speaks. |
| 3 Collo mio semplice cuore le mie parole, e le mie labbra diranno la pura sentenza. | 3 My words declare the uprightness of my heart, and what my lips know they speak sincerely. |
| 4 Lo Spirito di Dio (pure) fece me, e lo spiracolo dell' Onnipotente vivificò me. | 4 The spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life. |
| 5 Se tu puoi, rispondi a me, e contrasta contro alla mia faccia. | 5 Answer me, if you can; set your words in order before me; take your stand. |
| 6 Ecco che me, sì come te, fece Iddio; e di quello medesimo fango certo io sono formato. | 6 Behold, I am toward God as you are; I too was formed from a piece of clay. |
| 7 Ma impertanto lo mio miracolo non ti spaventi, e le mie parole non siano gravi a te. | 7 Behold, no fear of me need terrify you; my pressure will not be heavy upon you. |
| 8 Dicesti adunque nelle mie orecchie, e la voce delle tue parole io udi': | 8 "Surely, you have spoken in my hearing, and I have heard the sound of your words. |
| 9 Io sono mondo, senza peccato e senza macchia, e non è iniquitade in me. | 9 You say, 'I am clean, without transgression; I am pure, and there is no iniquity in me. |
| 10 Perciò che ritrovò in me la lamentazione, però ha egli arbitrato me suo nemico. | 10 Behold, he finds occasions against me, he counts me as his enemy; |
| 11 Pose nel nervo li miei piedi, e guardò tutte le mie vie. | 11 he puts my feet in the stocks, and watches all my paths.' |
| 12 Questa cosa è adunque, nella quale tu non se' giustificato; risponderò a te, perciò che maggiore è Iddio che l'uomo. | 12 "Behold, in this you are not right. I will answer you. God is greater than man. |
| 13 Contro a lui contendi, ch' elli non abbia risposto a te ad ogni parola? | 13 Why do you contend against him, saying, 'He will answer none of my words'? |
| 14 Una volta favella Iddio, e la seconda volta quello medesimo non ridice. | 14 For God speaks in one way, and in two, though man does not perceive it. |
| 15 Per lo sogno, nella visione di notte, quando viene lo sonno sopra gli uomini, e dormono nel letto; | 15 In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls upon men, while they slumber on their beds, |
| 16 allora apre le orecchie delli uomini, e ammaestrando loro insegna la disciplina, | 16 then he opens the ears of men, and terrifies them with warnings, |
| 17 acciò ch' egli rivolga l' uomo di quelle cose ch' elli fa, e liberi lui dalla superbia; | 17 that he may turn man aside from his deed, and cut off pride from man; |
| 18 liberando l'anima sua da corruzione, e la vita sua, acciò ch' ella non passi nel coltello. | 18 he keeps back his soul from the Pit, his life from perishing by the sword. |
| 19 E certo ello riprende per dolore nel letto, e tutte le sue osse fae marcire. | 19 "Man is also chastened with pain upon his bed, and with continual strife in his bones; |
| 20 Egli è abbominevole nella vita sua lo pane, e all' anima sua lo cibo che dinanzi è da essere desiderato. | 20 so that his life loathes bread, and his appetite dainty food. |
| 21 Vengono meno le carni sue; e l'ossa, ch' erano coperte, fieno spogliate. | 21 His flesh is so wasted away that it cannot be seen; and his bones which were not seen stick out. |
| 22 Approssimasi alla corruzione l'anima sua, e la vita sua alle cose mortifere. | 22 His soul draws near the Pit, and his life to those who bring death. |
| 23 Se sarà per lui l'angelo favellante una cosa di queste tali, acciò ch' elli anunzii la equità dell' uomo; | 23 If there be for him an angel, a mediator, one of the thousand, to declare to man what is right for him; |
| 24 avrà misericordia di lui, e dirà: libera lui, acciò ch' elli non discenda nella corruzione; ho trovato in che io lo aiuterò. | 24 and he is gracious to him, and says, 'Deliver him from going down into the Pit, I have found a ransom; |
| 25 Consumata è la carne sua colli tormenti; ritorni a' di della sua giovinezza. | 25 let his flesh become fresh with youth; let him return to the days of his youthful vigor'; |
| 26 Pregherà Iddio, e piacevole a lui sarae; vedrà la faccia sua in allegrezza, e renderà all' uomo la sua giustizia. | 26 then man prays to God, and he accepts him, he comes into his presence with joy. He recounts to men his salvation, |
| 27 Ragguarderà li uomini, e dirà: peccai, e veramente peccai; e sì come era degno, non ricevetti. | 27 and he sings before men, and says: 'I sinned, and perverted what was right, and it was not requited to me. |
| 28 Liberò l'anima sua acciò ch' ella non andasse alla morte, ma vivente vedesse la luce. | 28 He has redeemed my soul from going down into the Pit, and my life shall see the light.' |
| 29 Ecco, queste cose adopera Iddio tre volte per ciascuno, | 29 "Behold, God does all these things, twice, three times, with a man, |
| 30 acciò ch' egli rivolga l'anima sua della corruzione, e allumini con la luce delli viventi. | 30 to bring back his soul from the Pit, that he may see the light of life. |
| 31 Attendi, Iob, e odi me; e taci, insino ch' io favello. | 31 Give heed, O Job, listen to me; be silent, and I will speak. |
| 32 E se tu hai che favelli, rispondi a me; favella; certo io voglio che tu apparischi giusto. | 32 If you have anything to say, answer me; speak, for I desire to justify you. |
| 33 La quale cosa se non l' hai, odi me, e taci; e inseguerò a te la sapienza. | 33 If not, listen to me; be silent, and I will teach you wisdom." |
