¹ Хлопчина ж Самуїл служив Господеві під доглядом Елі. Слово Господнє було рідким того часу, видіння не були часто.	¹ Now, the boy Samuel was serving Yahweh in the presence of Eli; in those days it was rare for Yahwehto speak; visions were uncommon.
² Одного дня Елі поклався спати на звичайному місці — очі його слабшали, й він не міг уже бачити виразно, —	² One day, it happened that Eli was lying down in his room. His eyes were beginning to grow dim; hecould no longer see.
³ а світильник Божий не був ще згашений, і Самуїл лежав у Господнім храмі там, де стояв ковчег Божий.	³ The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying in Yahweh's sanctuary, where the ark ofGod was,
⁴ Аж ось Господь озвавсь: «Самуїле! Самуїле!» Цей відповів: «Ось я!»	⁴ when Yahweh cal ed, 'Samuel! Samuel!' He answered, 'Here I am,'
⁵ І побіг до Елі й каже: «Ось я! Кликав ти мене?» Той каже: «Ні, не кликав. Лягай спати.» І він пішов спати.	⁵ and, running to Eli, he said, 'Here I am, as you cal ed me.' Eli said, 'I did not call. Go back and lie down.'So he went and lay down.
⁶ Господь же озвавсь знову: «Самуїле! Самуїле!» Схопився Самуїл, пішов до Елі й каже: «Ось я! Кликав ти мене?» «Не кликав я тебе, мій сину, — відповів Елі, — лягай собі спати!»	⁶ And again Yahweh cal ed, 'Samuel! Samuel!' He got up and went to Eli and said, 'Here I am, as youcal ed me.' He replied, 'I did not cal , my son; go back and lie down.'
⁷ Самуїл не знав ще Господа, бо Господнє слово йому ще не об’являлося.	⁷ As yet, Samuel had no knowledge of Yahweh and the word of Yahweh had not yet been revealed tohim.
⁸ Знову Господь озвавсь до Самуїла, втрете; і схопивсь він, прийшов до Елі й каже: «Ось я! Кликав ти мене?» Тоді Елі збагнув, що то Господь кликав хлопчину,	⁸ Again Yahweh called, the third time. He got up and went to Eli and said, 'Here I am, as you cal ed me.'Eli then understood that Yahweh was cal ing the child,
⁹ тож і каже до Самуїла: «Йди но, лягай спати, а коли тебе покличуть, скажеш: Говори, Господи, слуга твій слухає.» І Самуїл пішов і ліг на своєму місці.	⁹ and he said to Samuel, 'Go and lie down, and if someone calls say, "Speak, Yahweh; for your servant islistening." ' So Samuel went and lay down in his place.
¹⁰ Прийшов Господь, став і закликав, як і першими разами: «Самуїле! Самуїле!» Самуїл озвався: «Говори! Слуга твій слухає!»	¹⁰ Yahweh then came and stood by, cal ing as he had done before, 'Samuel! Samuel!' Samuelanswered, 'Speak, Yahweh; for your servant is listening.'
¹¹ І сказав Господь до Самуїла: «Гляди, я зроблю таке в Ізраїлі, що в кожного, хто те почує, обіуш буде дзвеніти.	¹¹ Yahweh then said to Samuel, 'I am going to do something in Israel which wil make the ears of all whohear of it ring.
¹² Того дня я здійсню на Елі все, що я сказав був про його родину, від початку до кінця!	¹² I shal carry out that day against Eli everything that I have said about his family, from beginning to end.
¹³ Ти об’явиш йому, що я скараю його дім повіки за те злодіяння, бо він знав, як його сини зневажали Бога, а не скартав їх.	¹³ You are to tel him that I condemn his family for ever, since he is aware that his sons have beencursing God and yet has not corrected them.
¹⁴ Тому — клянусь домові Елі! — не загладити повіки ні жертвами, ані офірами провини дому Елі.»	¹⁴ Therefore -- I swear it to the family of Eli -- no sacrifice or offering shal ever expiate the guilt of Eli'sfamily.'
¹⁵ І лежав Самуїл аж до ранку, а вранці встав і відчинив двері Господнього храму. Боявся оповідати Елі про видіння,	¹⁵ Samuel lay where he was until morning and then opened the doors of Yahweh's temple. Samuel wasafraid to tel Eli about the vision,
¹⁶ та Елі його покликав і каже: «Мій сину, Самуїле!» Той відповів: «Ось я!»	¹⁶ but Eli cal ed Samuel and said, 'Samuel, my son.' 'Here I am,' he replied.
¹⁷ І спитав: «Що він тобі сказав? Не крий, прошу, від мене! Хай Бог зішле на тебе це й те, та ще й причинить, коли ти затаїш щось із усього того, що він сказав до тебе.»	¹⁷ Eli asked, 'What message did he give you? Please do not hide it from me. May God bring unnameableil s on you and worse ones, too, if you hide from me anything of what he said to you.'
¹⁸ От і відкрив йому Самуїл усе, нічого не затаїв від нього. Елі сказав: «Він — Господь! Хай чинить те, що йому довподоби!»	¹⁸ Samuel then told him everything, hiding nothing from him. Eli said, 'He is Yahweh; let him do what hethinks good.'
¹⁹ Самуїл виріс, і Господь був із ним і не дав ані одному його слову впасти на землю.	¹⁹ Samuel grew up. Yahweh was with him and did not let a single word fal to the ground of all that hehad told him.
²⁰ Ввесь Ізраїль, від Дану аж до Версавії, взнав, що Самуїл був наставлений Господнім пророком.	²⁰ Al Israel knew, from Dan to Beersheba, that Samuel was attested as a prophet of Yahweh.
²¹ Господь з’являвся в Шіло й далі, по тім, як був відкрився Самуїлові в Шіло в слові Господнім.	²¹ Yahweh continued to manifest himself at Shiloh, revealing himself to Samuel there,
