1 Валаам же побачив, що Господеві вгодно поблагословити Ізраїля, тож не пішов він уже, як перед тим, назустріч віщуванням, а обернувсь обличчям до пустелі.	1 Balaam then saw that it pleased Yahweh to bless Israel. He did not go as before to seek omens butturned towards the desert.
2 А підвівши Валаам очі, уздрів Ізраїля, що таборився за колінами; і зійшов на нього дух Божий,	2 Raising his eyes Balaam saw Israel settled tribe by tribe; the spirit of God came on him
3 і заходився він віщувати, мовивши: «Слово Валаама, сина Беора, слово мужа з одкритими очима;	3 and he declaimed his poem, as fol ows: The prophecy of Balaam son of Beor, the prophecy of theman with far-seeing eyes,
4 слово того, що чув глагол Божий, що бачить видіння Всемогутнього, що падає і прозріває.	4 the prophecy of one who hears the words of God. He sees what Shaddai makes him see, receivesthe divine answer, and his eyes are opened.
5 Що за красні, Якове, намети в тебе, — Ізраїлю, твої оселі!	5 How fair your tents are, Jacob, how fair your dwel ings, Israel,
6 Вони, немов луки, розкинулись, немов сади понад ріками, немов дуби, Господні садженці, немов оті кедри, що над водою.	6 like val eys that stretch afar, like gardens by the banks of a river, like aloes planted by Yahweh, likecedars beside the waters!
7 Вода ллється з його відер і насіння його у воді обильній; могутніший, ніж Агаг, його володар, і царство його знесеться високо.	7 A hero arises from their stock, he reigns over countless peoples. His king is greater than Agag, andhis kingship held in honour.
8 Той Бог, що з Єгипту його вивів, — для нього він мов буйвіл сильний. Тож пожере він народи йому ворожі, кості їхні поторощить, стрілами їх повбиває.	8 God has brought him out of Egypt, is like the wild ox's horns to him. He devours the corpses of hisenemies, breaking their bones, piercing them with his arrows.
9 Лягає й спочиває мов той лев, мов та левиця, — хто ж бо його збудить? Благословен, хто тебе благословляє, і проклят, хто проклинає тебе.»	9 He has crouched, he has lain down, like a lion, like a lioness; who dare rouse him? Blessed be thosewho bless you, and accursed be those who curse you!
10 Запалав Балак гнівом на Валаама, сплеснув руками та й каже: «Проклясти ворогів моїх я покликав тебе, а ти ось утретє те тільки й робиш, що їх благословляєш.	10 Balak flew into a rage with Balaam. He struck his hands together and said to Balaam, 'I brought youto curse my enemies, and you have insisted on blessing them three times over!
11 Геть забирайся у свій край! Мав я на думці гарно тебе вшанувати, та ось Господь не судив тобі тую честь.»	11 So now go home as fast as your legs can carry you. I promised to load you with honours. Yahwehhimself has deprived you of them.'
12 А Валаам і каже до Балака: «Хіба ж я вже посланцям, що ти посилав був по мене, не сказав:	12 Balaam retorted to Balak, 'Did I not tel the messengers you sent me,
13 навіть якби Балак давав мені дім свій, повний срібла й золота, я не переступив би наказ Господній, не вчинив би щось добре чи лихе з власної волі, а сказав би те лише, що Господь до мене промовив.	13 "Even if Balak gave me his house ful of gold and silver I could not go against Yahweh's order anddo anything of my own accord, whether for good or il ; whatever Yahweh says is what I shal say"?
14 Та ось тепер, коли пускаюсь я в дорогу до мого народу, — ходи, об’явлю тобі, що народ отой зробить із твоїм у майбутньому.»	14 Now that I am going back to my own folk, let me warn you what this people wil do to your people, indays to come.'
15 І заходився він віщувати, мовивши: «Слово Валаама, сина Беора, — слово мужа з одкритими очима;	15 He then declaimed his poem, as fol ows: The prophecy of Balaam son of Beor, the prophecy of theman with far-seeing eyes,
16 слово того, який чує глагол Божий, який знає про задуми Всевишнього, який бачив видіння Всемогутнього, що і падає, і прозріває.	16 the prophecy of one who hears the words of God, of one who knows the knowledge of the MostHigh. He sees what Shaddai makes him see, receives the divine answer, and his eyes are opened.
17 Бачу його, та не під теперішню пору; дивлюся на нього, та не зблизька. Зійде бо зірка з Якова, здійметься берло з Ізраїля, боки Моавові поторощить, і розгромить всіх синів Сета.	17 I see him -- but not in the present. I perceive him -- but not close at hand: a star is emerging fromJacob, a sceptre is rising from Israel, to strike the brow of Moab, the skul s of al the children of Seth.
18 Заволодіють вони Едомом, підпаде Сеїр під ворожу владу, — Ізраїль же зійде вгору.	18 Edom too wil be a conquered land, Seir too wil be a conquered land, when Israel exerts hisstrength,
19 Нащадок Якова панувати стане і знищить з міста те, що лишилось.»	19 when Jacob tramples on his enemies and destroys the last survivors of Ar.
20 І уздрів він Амалека й заходився далі віщувати, мовивши: «Хоч Амалек і первенець між народами, але загине він навіки.»	20 Balaam then looked at Amalek and declaimed his poem, as fol ows: Amalek, the earliest of nations!But his posterity wil perish forever.
21 Далі добачив Кенія і знову почав віщувати: «Сильний твій осідок, гніздо твоє лежить на скелі.	21 He then looked at the Kenites and declaimed his poem, as fol ows: Your dwel ing was firm, Kain,your nest perched high in the rock.
22 Але Кеній загине, Ашур полонить тебе.»	22 But the nest belongs to Beor; how long wil you be Asshur's captive?
23 І віщим нарешті духом промовив: «Ой горе тим, хто залишиться живий, коли Бог оте здійснить!	23 He then declaimed his poem, as fol ows: The Sea-people are gathering in the north,
24 Припливуть від хеттитів судна, підіб’ють Ашура, підіб’ють Евера, тож так само й він навіки загине.»	24 the vessels from the coasts of Kittim. They wil bear down on Asshur, bear down on Eber; he too willperish forever.
25 Устав Валаам та й пішов собі й повернувся до свого краю. А й Балак пішов своєю дорогою.	25 Balaam then got up, left and went home, and Balak too went his way.
