1 Тоді Самуїл узяв посудину з олією й вилив Саулові на голову, потім поцілував його й промовив: «Оцим Господь тебе помазав у князі над Ізраїлем, своїм народом! Прав, отже, над Господнім народом і визволь його з рук ворогів його навколо. Ось тобі знак, що Господь тебе помазав князем над своїм насліддям:	1 Samuel took a phial of oil and poured it on Saul's head; he then kissed him and said, 'Has not Yahwehanointed you as leader of his people Israel? You are the man who is to govern Yahweh's people and save themfrom the power of the enemies surrounding them. The sign for you that Yahweh has anointed you as prince ofhis heritage is this:
2 тепер, коли підеш від мене, зустрінеш двох чоловіків біля гробу Рахилі, на границі Веніямина, в Зелзасі, що тобі скажуть: знайшлись ослиці, що їх ти ходив шукати; та твоєму батькові байдуже про ослиць, він журиться за вами й каже: Що сталось із моїм сином?	2 after leaving me today, you will meet two men near the tomb of Rachel, on the frontier of Benjamin . . .and they wil say to you, "The donkeys which you went looking for have been found, and your father has lostinterest in the matter of the donkeys and is worrying about you and wondering, What am I to do about my son?"
3 Як підеш звідти далі й прийдеш до Тавор-Дуба, зустрінуть тебе там три чоловіки, що будуть сходити до Бога в Бетел. Один нестиме троє козенят, один три буханці хліба, а один — бурдюк вина.	3 Going on from there, you wil come to the Oak of Tabor, where you will meet three men going up toGod at Bethel; one wil be carrying three kids, one three loaves of bread and the third a skin of wine.
4 Вони привітають тебе й дадуть тобі два хліби й ти приймеш з їхніх рук.	4 They will greet you and give you two loaves of bread which you must accept from them.
5 Потім прийдеш на (Гівеа), горбок Божий, де живуть філістимляни, і як будеш увіходити в те місто, зустрінеш там гурток пророків, що сходитимуть із узвишшя, і перед ними гарфа, бубон, сопілка й гусла; пророкуватимуть саме в захваті.	5 After this, you wil come to Gibeah of God (where the Philistine garrison is) and, when you are justoutside the town, you wil meet a group of prophets coming down from the high place, headed by lyre,tambourine, pipe and harp; they wil be in a state of ecstasy.
6 Тоді зійде на тебе дух Господній, і ти будеш пророкувати з ними, і перетворишся в іншого чоловіка.	6 The spirit of Yahweh will then seize on you, and you wil go into ecstasy with them, and be changed into another man.
7 І як ці знаки здійсняться на тобі. чини як тобі вийде на руку, бо Бог із тобою.	7 When these signs have occurred, act as occasion serves, for God is with you.
8 Ти спустишся перш мене в Гілгал, і я прийду туди до тебе, щоб там принести всепалення й мирні жертви. Сім день чекай, поки прийду до тебе, й я звістую тобі, що маєш робити.»	8 You wil then go down, ahead of me, to Gilgal, and I shall join you there to make burnt offerings and tooffer communion sacrifices. You must wait seven days for me to come to you, and I shal then reveal to you whatyou must do.'
9 І от як він повернувся, щоб іти від Самуїла, Бог перетворив йому серце, і всі ті знаки того ж самого дня здійснилися.	9 As soon as he had turned his back to leave Samuel, God changed his heart. And al these signsoccurred that very day . . .
10 Звідти прибули вони в Гівеа, аж ось гурт пророків йому назустріч, і зійшов на нього дух Божий, і він пророкував між ними,	10 From there, they came to Gibeah: and there was a group of prophets coming to meet him! The spiritof God seized on him and he fell into ecstasy with them.
11 так що всі ті, що його перше знали, побачивши, як він пророкує з пророками, один до одного казали: «Що сталося з сином Кіша? Невже ж Саул також між пророками?»	11 Seeing him prophesying with the prophets, al the people who had known him previously said to oneanother, 'What has come over the son of Kish? Is Saul one of the prophets too?'
12 Відповів один із присутніх: «А хто їхній батько?» З того постала приповідка: «Невже й Саул між пророками?»	12 And one of the local people retorted, 'But who is their father?' Hence the origin of the proverb: Is Saulone of the prophets too?
13 Коли перестав пророкувати, пішов додому.	13 When he came out of his ecstasy, he went into Gibeah.
14 Дядько Саула спитав його та його слугу: «Куди ж ви ходили?» Він відповів: «Шукати ослиць. Та як побачили, що їх не знайти, пішли до Самуїла.»	14 Saul's uncle asked him and his servant, 'Where have you been?' 'Looking for the donkeys,' hereplied, 'and when we could not find them anywhere, we went to Samuel.'
15 Далі мовив дядько Саула: «А розкажи но мені, що вам казав Самуїл.»	15 Saul's uncle said, 'Tel me please what Samuel said to you.'
16 Тоді Саул до свого дядька: «Він нам впевнено сказав, мовляв, ослиці знайшлися.» А про те, що Самуїл сказав про царство, він йому не признався.	16 Saul said to his uncle, 'He merely told us that the donkeys were already found,' but did not mentionanything that Samuel had said about the kingship.
17 Згодом скликав Самуїл народ до Господа в Міцпу	17 Samuel summoned the people to Yahweh at Mizpah
18 й сказав до синів Ізраїля: «Так каже Господь Бог Ізраїля: Я вивів Ізраїля з Єгипту й визволив вас із рук єгиптян та всіх царств, що вас тіснили.	18 and said to the Israelites, 'Yahweh, God of Israel, says this, "I brought Israel out of Egypt anddelivered you from the power of the Egyptians and of al the kingdoms that were oppressing you."
19 Ви ж тепер покидаєте вашого Бога, того, що врятував вас з усіх ваших нужд та скорбот, та й кажете: Ні! Таки царя постав над нами! — Оце ж ставайте перед Господом за поколіннями і за тисячами вашими.»	19 But today you have rejected your God, him who saves you from al your difficulties and troubles; andyou have said, "No, you must set a king over us." Very well, take your positions before Yahweh, tribe by tribeand clan by clan.'
20 Самуїл звелів приступити всім колінам Ізраїля, й випав жереб на коліно Веніямина.	20 Samuel then made al the tribes of Israel come forward, and the lot indicated the tribe of Benjamin.
21 Далі звелів приступити колінові Веніямина за родинами, і випав жереб на родину Матрі. Нарешті звелів приступити родині Матрі, чоловік за чоловіком. і жереб випав на Саула, сина Кіша. Заходились його шукати, та не знайшли.	21 He then made the tribe of Benjamin come forward clan by clan, and the lot indicated the clan ofMatri; he then made the clan of Matri come forward one by one, and the lot indicated Saul son of Kish, but whenthey looked for him, he was not to be found.
22 Ще раз спитали Господа: «Чи ж він прийшов сюди?» Господь відповів: «Ось він сховавсь між клунками.»	22 Again they consulted Yahweh, 'Has the man come here?' Yahweh replied, 'There he is, hidingamong the baggage.'
23 І побігли й привели його звідти. Став він серед народу й цілою головою був вищий над усіма.	23 So they ran and fetched him out and, as he stood among the people, he was head and shoulderstal er than any of them.
24 Самуїл сказав до всього народу: «Дивіться, кого вибрав Господь! У всім народі нема йому до пари!» Тоді всі закликали. мовивши: «Хай живе цар!»	24 Samuel then said to all the people, 'You have seen the man whom Yahweh has chosen, and thatamong the whole people he has no equal.' And all the people acclaimed him, shouting, 'Long live the king!'
25 Самуїл виклав перед народом право Царське, списав його в книзі й поклав перед Господом, а потім відпустив увесь народ — кожного до свого Дому.	25 Samuel then explained the king's constitutional position to the people and inscribed this in a bookwhich he placed before Yahweh. Samuel then sent al the people away, everyone back to his home.
26 Пішов і Саул до свого дому в Гівеа. а з ним пішли деякі хоробрі, що їм Господь зворушив серце.	26 Saul too went home to Gibeah and with him went those strong men whose hearts God had touched.
27 Деякі ж негідники казали: Чи може цей спасти нас?» І зневажаючи його, не принесли йому гостинця.	27 But there were some scoundrels who said, 'How can this fellow save us?' These treated him withcontempt and offered him no present.
