I Livro de Samuel 8

SAGRADA BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Samuel, tendo envelhecido, estabeleceu os seus filhos juízes de Israel.	1 When Samuel grew old, he appointed his sons as judges of Israel.
2 Seu filho primogênito chamava-se Joel, e o segundo Abia; e julgavam em Bersabéia.	2 His eldest son was cal ed Joel and his second one, Abijah; they were judges at Beersheba.
3 Os filhos de Samuel, porém, não seguiram as suas pisadas, mas deixaram-se arrastar pela cobiça, recebendo presentes e violando o direito.	3 His sons did not fol ow his example but, seduced by the love of money, took bribes and gave biasedverdicts.
4 Todos os anciãos de Israel vieram em grupo ter com Samuel em Ramá,	4 The elders of Israel all assembled, went back to Samuel at Ramah, and said,
5 e disseram-lhe: Estás velho e teus filhos não seguem as tuas pisadas. Dá-nos um rei que nos governe, como o têm todas as nações.	5 'Look, you are old, and your sons are not fol owing your example. So give us a king to judge us, like theother nations.'
6 Estas palavras: Dá-nos um rei que nos governe, desagradaram a Samuel, que se pôs em oração diante do Senhor.	6 Samuel thought that it was wrong of them to say, 'Let us have a king to judge us,' so he prayed toYahweh.
7 O Senhor disse-lhe: Ouve a voz do povo em tudo o que te disseram. Não é a ti que eles rejeitam, mas a mim, pois já não querem que eu reine sobre eles.	7 But Yahweh said to Samuel, 'Obey the voice of the people in al that they say to you: it is not you theyhave rejected
8 Fazem contigo como sempre o têm feito comigo, desde o dia em que os tirei do Egito até o presente: abandonam-me para servir a deuses estranhos.	8 but me, not wishing me to reign over them any more. They are now doing to you exactly what they havedone to me since the day I brought them out of Egypt until now, deserting me and serving other gods.
9 Atende-os, agora; mas declara-lhes solenemente, dando-lhes a conhecer os direitos do rei que reinará sobre eles.	9 So, do what they ask; only, you must give them a solemn warning, and must tell them what the kingwho is to reign over them will do.'
10 Referiu Samuel todas as palavras do Senhor ao povo que reclamava um rei:	10 Everything that Yahweh had said, Samuel then repeated to the people who were asking him for aking.
11 Eis, disse ele, como vos há de tratar o vosso rei: tomará os vossos filhos para os seus carros e sua cavalaria, ou para correr diante do seu carro.	11 He said, 'This is what the king who is to reign over you wil do. He wil take your sons and direct themto his chariotry and cavalry, and they wil run in front of his chariot.
12 Fará deles chefes de mil e chefes de cinqüenta, empregá-los-á em suas lavouras e em suas colheitas, na fabricação de suas armas de guerra e de seus carros.	12 He wil use them as leaders of a thousand and leaders of fifty; he wil make them plough his fields andgather in his harvest and make his weapons of war and the gear for his chariots.
13 Fará de vossas filhas suas perfumistas, cozinheiras e padeiras.	13 He wil take your daughters as perfumers, cooks and bakers.
14 Tomará também o melhor de vossos campos, de vossas vinhas e de vossos olivais, e dá-los-á aos seus servos.	14 He wil take the best of your fields, your vineyards and your olive groves and give them to his officials.
15 Tomará também o dízimo de vossas semeaduras e de vossas vinhas para dá-los aos seus eunucos e aos seus servos.	15 He wil tithe your crops and vineyards to provide for his courtiers and his officials.
16 Tomará também vossos servos e vossas servas, vossos melhores bois e vossos jumentos, para empregá-los no seu trabalho.	16 He wil take the best of your servants, men and women, of your oxen and your donkeys, and makethem work for him.
17 Tomará ainda o dízimo de vossos rebanhos, e vós mesmos sereis seus escravos.	17 He wil tithe your flocks, and you yourselves wil become his slaves.
18 E no dia em que clamardes ao Senhor por causa do rei, que vós mesmos escolhestes, o Senhor não vos ouvirá.	18 When that day comes, you wil cry aloud because of the king you have chosen for yourselves, but onthat day Yahweh wil not hear you.'
19 O povo recusou ouvir a voz de Samuel. Não, disseram eles; é preciso que tenhamos um rei!	19 The people, however, refused to listen to Samuel. They said, 'No! We are determined to have a king,
20 Queremos ser como todas as outras nações; o nosso rei nos julgará, marchará à nossa frente e será nosso chefe na guerra.	20 so that we can be like the other nations, with our own king to rule us and lead us and fight our battles.'
21 Samuel ouviu todas as palavras do povo e referiu-as ao Senhor.	21 Samuel listened to al that the people had to say and repeated it in Yahweh's ear.
22 E respondeu-lhe o Senhor: Ouve-os; dá-lhes um rei. Samuel disse aos israelitas: Volte cada um para a sua cidade.	22 Yahweh then said to Samuel, 'Do as they ask and give them a king.' Samuel then said to theIsraelites, 'Go home, each of you, to his own town.'
