Primeira Epístola aos Coríntios 14

1 Empenhai-vos em procurar a caridade. Aspirai igualmente aos dons espirituais, mas sobretudo ao de profecia.	1 Pursue charity. Be zealous for spiritual things, but only so that you may prophesy.
2 Aquele que fala em línguas não fala aos homens, senão a Deus: ninguém o entende, pois fala coisas misteriosas, sob a ação do Espírito.	2 For whoever speaks in tongues, speaks not to men, but to God. For no one understands. Yet by the Spirit, he speaks mysteries.
3 Aquele, porém, que profetiza fala aos homens, para edificá-los, exortá-los e consolá-los.	3 But whoever prophesies speaks to men for edification and exhortation and consolation.
4 Aquele que fala em línguas edifica-se a si mesmo; mas o que profetiza, edifica a assembléia.	4 Whoever speaks in tongues edifies himself. But whoever prophesies edifies the Church.
5 Ora, desejo que todos faleis em línguas, porém muito mais desejo que profetizeis. Maior é quem profetiza do que quem fala em línguas, a não ser que este as interprete, para que a assembléia receba edificação.	5 Now I want you all to speak in tongues, but more so to prophesy. For he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks in tongues, unless perhaps he interprets, so that the Church may receive edification.
6 Suponhamos, irmãos, que eu fosse ter convosco falando em línguas, de que vos aproveitaria, se minha palavra não vos desse revelação, nem ciência, nem profecia ou doutrina?	6 But now, brothers, if I were to come to you speaking in tongues, how would it benefit you, unless instead I speak to you in revelation, or in knowledge, or in prophecy, or in doctrine?
7 É o que se dá com os instrumentos inanimados de música, por exemplo a flauta ou a harpa: se não produzirem sons distintos, como se poderá reconhecer a música tocada?	7 Even those things that are without a soul can make sounds, whether it is a wind or a stringed instrument. But unless they present a distinction within the sounds, how will it be known which is from the pipe and which is from the string?
8 Se a trombeta só der sons confusos, quem se preparará para a batalha?	8 For example, if the trumpet made an uncertain sound, who would prepare himself for battle?
9 Assim também vós: se vossa língua só profere palavras ininteligíveis, como se compreenderá o que dizeis? Sereis como quem fala ao vento.	9 So it is with you also, for unless you utter with the tongue in plain speech, how will it be known what is said? For then you would be speaking into the air.
10 Há no mundo grande quantidade de línguas e todas são compreensíveis.	10 Consider that there are so many different kinds of languages in this world, and yet none is without a voice.
11 Porém, se desconhecer o sentido das palavras, serei um estrangeiro para quem me fala e ele será também um estrangeiro para mim.	11 Therefore, if I do not understand the nature of the voice, then I shall be like a foreigner to the one with whom I am speaking; and he who is speaking will be like a foreigner to me.
12 Assim, uma vez que aspirais aos dons espirituais, procurai tê-los em abundância para edificação da Igreja.	12 So it is with you also. And since you are zealous for what is spiritual, seek the edification of the Church, so that you may abound.
13 Por isso, quem fala em línguas, peça na oração o dom de as interpretar.	13 For this reason, too, whoever speaks in tongues, let him pray for the interpretation.
14 Se eu oro em virtude do dom das línguas, o meu espírito ora, mas o meu entendimento fica sem fruto.	14 So, if I pray in tongues, my spirit prays, but my mind is without fruit.
15 Então que fazer? Orarei com o espírito, mas orarei também com o entendimento; cantarei com o espírito, mas cantarei também com o entendimento.	15 What is next? I should pray with the spirit, and also pray with the mind. I should sing psalms with the spirit, and also recite psalms with the mind.
16 De outra forma, se só renderes graças com o espírito, como dirá Amém a tuas ações de graças aquele que ocupar o lugar dos simples?	16 Otherwise, if you have blessed only with the spirit, how can someone, in a state of ignorance, add an “Amen” to your blessing? For he does not know what you are saying.
17 Sem dúvida, as tuas ações de graças podem ser belas, mas o outro não é edificado.	17 In this case, certainly, you give thanks well, but the other person is not edified.
18 Graças a Deus que possuo o dom de línguas superior a todos vós.	18 I thank my God that I speak in tongues for all of you.
19 Mas prefiro falar na assembléia cinco palavras que compreendo, para instruir também os outros, a falar dez mil palavras em línguas.	19 But in the Church, I prefer to speak five words from my mind, so that I may instruct others also, rather than ten thousand words in tongues.
20 Irmãos, não sejais crianças quanto ao modo de julgar: na malícia, sim, sede crianças; mas quanto ao julgamento, sede homens.	20 Brothers, do not choose to have the minds of children. Instead, be free of malice like infants, but be mature in your minds.
21 Na lei está escrito: Será por gente de língua estrangeira e por lábios estrangeiros que falarei a este povo; e nem assim me ouvirão, diz o Senhor {Is 28,11s}.	21 It is written in the law: “I will speak to this people with other tongues and other lips, and even so, they will not heed me, says the Lord.”
22 Assim, as línguas são sinal, não para os fiéis, mas para os infiéis; enquanto as profecias são um sinal, não para os infiéis, mas para os fiéis.	22 And so, tongues are a sign, not for believers, but for unbelievers; and prophecies are not for unbelievers, but for believers.
23 Se, pois, numa assembléia da igreja inteira todos falarem em línguas, e se entrarem homens simples ou infiéis, não dirão que estais loucos?	23 If then, the entire Church were to gather together as one, and if all were to speak in tongues, and then ignorant or unbelieving persons were to enter, would they not say that you were insane?
24 Se, porém, todos profetizarem, e entrar ali um infiel ou um homem simples, por todos é convencido, por todos é julgado;	24 But if everyone prophesies, and one who is ignorant or unbelieving enters, he may be convinced by it all, because he understands it all.
25 os segredos do seu coração tornam-se manifestos. Então, prostrado com a face em terra, adorará a Deus e proclamará que Deus está realmente entre vós.	25 The secrets of his heart are then made manifest. And so, falling to his face, he would adore God, proclaiming that God is truly among you.
26 Em suma, que dizer, irmãos? Quando vos reunis, quem dentre vós tem um cântico, um ensinamento, uma revelação, um discurso em línguas, uma interpretação a fazer - que isto se faça de modo a edificar.	26 What is next, brothers? When you gather together, each one of you may have a psalm, or a doctrine, or a revelation, or a language, or an interpretation, but let everything be done for edification.
27 Se há quem fala em línguas, não falem senão dois ou três, quando muito, e cada um por sua vez, e haja alguém que interprete.	27 If anyone is speaking in tongues, let there be only two, or at most three, and then in turn, and let someone interpret.
28 Se não houver intérprete, fiquem calados na reunião, e falem consigo mesmos e com Deus.	28 But if there is no one to interpret, he should remain silent in the church, then he may speak when he is alone with God.
29 Quanto aos profetas, falem dois ou três, e os outros julguem.	29 And let the prophets speak, two or three, and let the others discern.
30 Se for feita uma revelação a algum dos assistentes, cale-se o primeiro.	30 But then, if something is revealed to another who is sitting, let the first one become silent.
31 Todos, um após outro, podeis profetizar, para todos aprenderem e serem todos exortados.	31 For you are all able to prophesy one at a time, so that all may learn and all may be encouraged.
32 O espírito dos profetas deve estar-lhes submisso,	32 For the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.
33 porquanto Deus não é Deus de confusão, mas de paz.	33 And God is not of dissension, but of peace, just as I also teach in all the churches of the saints.
34 Como em todas as igrejas dos santos, as mulheres estejam caladas nas assembléias: não lhes é permitido falar, mas devem estar submissas, como também ordena a lei.	34 Women should be silent in the churches. For it is not permitted for them to speak; but instead, they should be subordinate, as the law also says.
35 Se querem aprender alguma coisa, perguntem-na em casa aos seus maridos, porque é inconveniente para uma mulher falar na assembléia.	35 And if they want to learn anything, let them ask their husbands at home. For it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in church.
36 Porventura foi dentre vós que saiu a palavra de Deus? Ou veio ela tão-somente para vós?	36 So now, did the Word of God proceed from you? Or was it sent to you alone?
37 Se alguém se julga profeta ou agraciado com dons espirituais, reconheça que as coisas que vos escrevo são um mandamento do Senhor.	37 If anyone seems to be a prophet or a spiritual person, he should understand these things which I am writing to you, that these things are the commandments of the Lord.
38 Mas, se alguém quiser ignorá-lo, que o ignore!	38 If anyone does not recognize these things, he should not be recognized.
39 Assim, pois, irmãos, aspirai ao dom de profetizar; porém, não impeçais falar em línguas.	39 And so, brothers, be zealous to prophesy, and do not prohibit speaking in tongues.
40 Mas faça-se tudo com dignidade e ordem.	40 But let everything be done respectfully and according to proper order.
