Primeira Epístola aos Coríntios 14

SAGRADA BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Empenhai-vos em procurar a caridade. Aspirai igualmente aos dons espirituais, mas sobretudo ao de profecia.	1 Make love your aim; but be eager, too, for spiritual gifts, and especial y for prophesying.
2 Aquele que fala em línguas não fala aos homens, senão a Deus: ninguém o entende, pois fala coisas misteriosas, sob a ação do Espírito.	2 Those who speak in a tongue speak to God, but not to other people, because nobody understandsthem; they are speaking in the Spirit and the meaning is hidden.
3 Aquele, porém, que profetiza fala aos homens, para edificá-los, exortá-los e consolá-los.	3 On the other hand, someone who prophesies speaks to other people, building them up and givingthem encouragement and reassurance.
4 Aquele que fala em línguas edifica-se a si mesmo; mas o que profetiza, edifica a assembléia.	4 Those who speak in a tongue may build themselves up, but those who prophesy build up thecommunity.
5 Ora, desejo que todos faleis em línguas, porém muito mais desejo que profetizeis. Maior é quem profetiza do que quem fala em línguas, a não ser que este as interprete, para que a assembléia receba edificação.	5 While I should like you all to speak in tongues, I would much rather you could prophesy; since thosewho prophesy are of greater importance than those who speak in tongues, unless they can interpret what theysay so that the church is built up by it.
6 Suponhamos, irmãos, que eu fosse ter convosco falando em línguas, de que vos aproveitaria, se minha palavra não vos desse revelação, nem ciência, nem profecia ou doutrina?	6 Now suppose, brothers, I come to you and speak in tongues, what good shal I do you if my speakingprovides no revelation or knowledge or prophecy or instruction?
7 É o que se dá com os instrumentos inanimados de música, por exemplo a flauta ou a harpa: se não produzirem sons distintos, como se poderá reconhecer a música tocada?	7 It is the same with an inanimate musical instrument. If it does not make any distinction between notes,how can one recognise what is being played on flute or lyre?
8 Se a trombeta só der sons confusos, quem se preparará para a batalha?	8 If the trumpet sounds a cal which is unrecognisable, who is going to get ready for the attack?
9 Assim também vós: se vossa língua só profere palavras ininteligíveis, como se compreenderá o que dizeis? Sereis como quem fala ao vento.	9 It is the same with you: if you do not use your tongue to produce speech that can be readilyunderstood, how can anyone know what you are saying? You will be talking to the air.
10 Há no mundo grande quantidade de línguas e todas são compreensíveis.	10 However many the languages used in the world, al of them use sound;
11 Porém, se desconhecer o sentido das palavras, serei um estrangeiro para quem me fala e ele será também um estrangeiro para mim.	11 but if I do not understand the meaning of the sound, I am a barbarian to the person who is speaking,and the speaker is a barbarian to me.
12 Assim, uma vez que aspirais aos dons espirituais, procurai tê-los em abundância para edificação da Igreja.	12 So with you, as you are eager to have spiritual powers, aim to be rich in those which build up thecommunity.
13 Por isso, quem fala em línguas, peça na oração o dom de as interpretar.	13 That is why anybody who speaks in a tongue must pray that he may be given the interpretation.
14 Se eu oro em virtude do dom das línguas, o meu espírito ora, mas o meu entendimento fica sem fruto.	14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit may be praying but my mind derives no fruit from it.
15 Então que fazer? Orarei com o espírito, mas orarei também com o entendimento; cantarei com o espírito, mas cantarei também com o entendimento.	15 What then? I shal pray with the spirit, but I shall pray with the mind as wel : I shall sing praises withthe spirit and I shal sing praises with the mind as well.
16 De outra forma, se só renderes graças com o espírito, como dirá Amém a tuas ações de graças aquele que ocupar o lugar dos simples?	16 Otherwise, if you say your blessing only with the spirit, how is the uninitiated person going to answer'Amen' to your thanksgiving, without understanding what you are saying?
17 Sem dúvida, as tuas ações de graças podem ser belas, mas o outro não é edificado.	17 You may be making your thanksgiving wel , but the other person is not built up at al .
18 Graças a Deus que possuo o dom de línguas superior a todos vós.	18 I thank God that I speak with tongues more than any of you;
19 Mas prefiro falar na assembléia cinco palavras que compreendo, para instruir também os outros, a falar dez mil palavras em línguas.	19 al the same, when I am in the assembly I would rather say five words with my mind, to instructothers as wel , than ten thousand words in a tongue.
20 Irmãos, não sejais crianças quanto ao modo de julgar: na malícia, sim, sede crianças; mas quanto ao julgamento, sede homens.	20 Brothers, do not remain children in your thinking; infants in wickedness-agreed, but in your thinkinggrown-ups.
21 Na lei está escrito: Será por gente de língua estrangeira e por lábios estrangeiros que falarei a este povo; e nem assim me ouvirão, diz o Senhor {Is 28,11s}.	21 It says in the written Law: In strange tongues and in a foreign language I wil talk to this nation, andeven so they will refuse to listen, says the Lord.
22 Assim, as línguas são sinal, não para os fiéis, mas para os infiéis; enquanto as profecias são um sinal, não para os infiéis, mas para os fiéis.	22 So then, strange languages are significant not for believers, but for unbelievers; whereas on theother hand, prophesying is not for unbelievers, but for believers.
23 Se, pois, numa assembléia da igreja inteira todos falarem em línguas, e se entrarem homens simples ou infiéis, não dirão que estais loucos?	23 Suppose that, if the whole congregation were meeting and al of them speaking in tongues, andsome uninitiated people or unbelievers were to come in, don't you think they would say that you were all raving?
24 Se, porém, todos profetizarem, e entrar ali um infiel ou um homem simples, por todos é convencido, por todos é julgado;	24 But if you were al prophesying when an unbeliever or someone uninitiated came in, he would findhimself put to the test by al and judged by al
25 os segredos do seu coração tornam-se manifestos. Então, prostrado com a face em terra, adorará a Deus e proclamará que Deus está realmente entre vós.	25 and the secrets of his heart revealed; and so he would fal down on his face and worship God,declaring that God is indeed among you.
26 Em suma, que dizer, irmãos? Quando vos reunis, quem dentre vós tem um cântico, um ensinamento, uma revelação, um discurso em línguas, uma interpretação a fazer - que isto se faça de modo a edificar.	26 Then what should it be like, brothers? When you come together each of you brings a psalm or someinstruction or a revelation, or speaks in a tongue or gives an interpretation. Let al these things be done in a waythat wil build up the community.
27 Se há quem fala em línguas, não falem senão dois ou três, quando muito, e cada um por sua vez, e haja alguém que interprete.	27 If there are to be any people speaking in a tongue, then let there be only two, or at the most three,and those one at a time, and let one of these interpret.
28 Se não houver intérprete, fiquem calados na reunião, e falem consigo mesmos e com Deus.	28 If there is no interpreter, then let each of them be quiet in the assembly, and speak only to himselfand God.
29 Quanto aos profetas, falem dois ou três, e os outros julguem.	29 Let two prophets, or three, speak while the rest weigh their words;
30 Se for feita uma revelação a algum dos assistentes, cale-se o primeiro.	30 and if a revelation comes to someone else who is sitting by, the speaker should stop speaking.
31 Todos, um após outro, podeis profetizar, para todos aprenderem e serem todos exortados.	31 You can al prophesy, but one at a time, then al wil learn something and al receive encouragement.
32 O espírito dos profetas deve estar-lhes submisso,	32 The prophetic spirit is to be under the prophets' control,
33 porquanto Deus não é Deus de confusão, mas de paz.	33 for God is a God not of disorder but of peace. As in al the churches of God's holy people,
34 Como em todas as igrejas dos santos, as mulheres estejam caladas nas assembléias: não lhes é permitido falar, mas devem estar submissas, como também ordena a lei.	34 women are to remain quiet in the assemblies, since they have no permission to speak: theirs is asubordinate part, as the Law itself says.
35 Se querem aprender alguma coisa, perguntem-na em casa aos seus maridos, porque é inconveniente para uma mulher falar na assembléia.	35 If there is anything they want to know, they should ask their husbands at home: it is shameful for awoman to speak in the assembly.
36 Porventura foi dentre vós que saiu a palavra de Deus? Ou veio ela tão-somente para vós?	36 Do you real y think that you are the source of the word of God? Or that you are the only people towhom it has come?
37 Se alguém se julga profeta ou agraciado com dons espirituais, reconheça que as coisas que vos escrevo são um mandamento do Senhor.	37 Anyone who claims to be a prophet, or to have any spiritual powers must recognise that what I amwriting to you is a commandment from the Lord.
38 Mas, se alguém quiser ignorá-lo, que o ignore!	38 If anyone does not recognise this, it is because that person is not recognised himself.
39 Assim, pois, irmãos, aspirai ao dom de profetizar; porém, não impeçais falar em línguas.	39 So, my brothers, be eager to prophesy, and do not suppress the gift of speaking in tongues.
40 Mas faça-se tudo com dignidade e ordem.	40 But make sure that everything is done in a proper and orderly fashion.
