1 Que vantagem diremos, pois, que conseguiu Abraão, nosso pai segundo a carne?	1 So then, what shall we say that Abraham had achieved, who is our father according to the flesh?
2 Porque, se Abraão foi justificado em virtude de sua observância, tem que se gloriar; mas não diante de Deus.	2 For if Abraham was justified by works, he would have glory, but not with God.
3 Ora, que diz a Escritura? Abraão creu em Deus e isso lhe foi imputado em conta de justiça {Gn 15,6}.	3 For what does Scripture say? “Abram believed God, and it was reputed to him unto justice.”
4 Ora, o salário não é gratificação, mas uma dívida ao trabalhador.	4 But for he who works, wages are not accounted according to grace, but according to debt.
5 Mas aquele que sem obra alguma crê naquele que justifica o ímpio, a sua fé lhe é imputada em conta de justiça.	5 Yet truly, for he who does not work, but who believes in him who justifies the impious, his faith is reputed unto justice, according to the purpose of the grace of God.
6 É assim que Davi proclama bem-aventurado o homem a quem Deus atribui justiça, independentemente das obras:	6 Similarly, David also declares the blessedness of a man, to whom God brings justice without works:
7 Bem-aventurados aqueles cujas iniqüidades foram perdoadas e cujos pecados foram cobertos!	7 “Blessed are they whose iniquities have been forgiven and whose sins have been covered.
8 Bem-aventurado o homem ao qual o Senhor não imputou o seu pecado {Sl 31,1s}.	8 Blessed is the man to whom the Lord has not imputed sin.”
9 Essa bem-aventurança é somente para os circuncisos, ou também para os incircuncisos? Dizemos, com efeito, que a fé foi imputada a Abraão em conta de justiça.	9 Does this blessedness, then, remain only in the circumcised, or is it even in the uncircumcised? For we say that faith was reputed to Abraham unto justice.
10 Quando lhe foi ela imputada? Depois ou antes de sua circuncisão? Não depois, mas antes de ser circuncidado.	10 But then how was it reputed? In circumcision or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision.
11 Depois é que recebeu o sinal da circuncisão, como selo da justiça que tinha obtido pela fé antes de ser circuncidado. E assim se tornou o pai de todos os incircuncisos que crêem, a fim de que também a estes seja imputada a justiça.	11 For he received the sign of circumcision as a symbol of the justice of that faith which exists apart from circumcision, so that he might be the father of all those who believe while uncircumcised, so that it might also be reputed to them unto justice,
12 Pai também dos circuncisos, que não só trazem o sinal, mas que acompanham as pegadas da fé que nosso pai Abraão possuía antes de ser circuncidado.	12 and he might be the father of circumcision, not only for those who are of circumcision, but even for those who follow the footsteps of that faith which is in the uncircumcision of our father Abraham.
13 Com efeito, não foi em virtude da lei que a promessa de herdar o mundo foi feita a Abraão ou à sua posteridade, mas em virtude da justiça da fé.	13 For the Promise to Abraham, and to his posterity, that he would inherit the world, was not through the law, but through the justice of faith.
14 Porque, se a herança é reservada aos observadores da lei, a fé já não tem razão de ser e a promessa fica sem valor.	14 For if those who are of the law are the heirs, then faith becomes empty and the Promise is abolished.
15 Porquanto a lei produz a ira; e onde não existe lei, não há transgressão.	15 For the law works unto wrath. And where there is no law, there is no law-breaking.
16 Logo, é pela fé que alguém se torna herdeiro. Portanto, gratuitamente; e a promessa é assegurada a toda a posteridade de Abraão, não somente aos que procedem da lei, mas também aos que possuem a fé de Abraão, que é pai de todos nós.	16 Because of this, it is from faith according to grace that the Promise is ensured for all posterity, not only for those who are of the law, but also for those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all before God,
17 Em verdade, está escrito: Eu te constituí pai de muitas nações {Gn 17,5}; {nosso pai, portanto} diante dos olhos daquele em quem acreditou, o Deus que dá vida aos mortos e chama à existência as coisas que estão no nada.	17 in whom he believed, who revives the dead and who calls those things that do not exist into existence. For it is written: “I have established you as the father of many nations.”
18 Esperando, contra toda a esperança, Abraão teve fé e se tornou pai de muitas nações, segundo o que lhe fora dito: Assim será a tua descendência {Gn 15,5}.	18 And he believed, with a hope beyond hope, so that he might become the father of many nations, according to what was said to him: “Thus shall your posterity shall be.”
19 Não vacilou na fé, embora reconhecendo o seu próprio corpo sem vigor - pois tinha quase cem anos - e o seio de Sara igualmente amortecido.	19 And he was not weakened in faith, nor did he consider his own body to be dead (though he was then almost one hundred years old), nor the womb of Sarah to be dead.
20 Ante a promessa de Deus, não vacilou, não desconfiou, mas conservou-se forte na fé e deu glória a Deus.	20 And then, in the Promise of God, he did not hesitate out of distrust, but instead he was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God,
21 Estava plenamente convencido de que Deus era poderoso para cumprir o que prometera.	21 knowing most fully that whatever God has promised, he is also able to accomplish.
22 Eis por que sua fé lhe foi contada como justiça.	22 And for this reason, it was reputed to him unto justice.
23 Ora, não é só para ele que está escrito que a fé lhe foi imputada em conta de justiça.	23 Now this has been written, that it was reputed to him unto justice, not only for his sake,
24 É também para nós, pois a nossa fé deve ser-nos imputada igualmente, porque cremos naquele que dos mortos ressuscitou Jesus, nosso Senhor,	24 but also for our sake. For the same shall be reputed to us, if we believe in him who raised up our Lord Jesus Christ from the dead,
25 o qual foi entregue por nossos pecados e ressuscitado para a nossa justificação.	25 who was handed over because of our offenses, and who rose again for our justification.
