1 Tomando consigo cinco mil homens e mil cavaleiros de elite, Górgias se pôs a caminho à noite	1 Gorgias took with him five thousand foot and a thousand picked cavalry, and the force moved off bynight
2 para surpreender o acampamento dos judeus e atacá-lo de improviso. A gente da cidadela servia-lhe de guia.	2 with the object of attacking the Jewish position and dealing them an unexpected blow; the men fromthe Citadel were there to guide him.
3 Mas Judas o soube, e com seus destemidos companheiros saiu para esmagar aquelas forças do rei que tinham ficado perto de Emaús,	3 Judas got wind of it and himself moved off with his fighters to strike at the royal army at Emmaus,
4 enquanto as tropas estavam espalhadas na planície.	4 while its fighting troops were stil dispersed outside the camp.
5 Chegou Górgias à noite ao acampamento de Judas, mas não encontrou ninguém; pôs-se então à sua procura nas montanhas, dizendo: Fugiram diante de nós.	5 Hence, when Gorgias reached Judas' camp, he found no one and began looking for the Jews in themountains. 'For', he said, 'we have got them on the run.'
6 Todavia Judas apareceu na planície ao despertar do dia com três mil homens, que, excetuando espadas e escudos, não estavam armados como o teriam querido;	6 First light found Judas in the plain with three thousand men, although these lacked the armour andswords they would have wished.
7 entrementes viram eles o campo dos gentios poderoso, fortificado de cavalaria e os próprios inimigos prontos para o combate.	7 They could now see the gentile encampment with its strong fortifications and cavalry surrounding it,clearly people who understood warfare.
8 Não temais seu número, disse Judas a seus companheiros, e nem receeis seu choque.	8 Judas said to his men, 'Do not be afraid of their numbers, and do not flinch at their attack.
9 Lembrai-vos como nossos pais foram salvos no mar Vermelho, quando o faraó os perseguia com seu exército.	9 Remember how our ancestors were delivered at the Red Sea when Pharaoh was pursuing them inforce.
10 Gritemos agora para o céu para que ele se apiade de nós, que se lembre da Aliança com nossos antepassados e queira hoje esmagar esse exército aos nossos olhos.	10 And now let us cal on Heaven: if he cares for us, he wil remember his covenant with our ancestorsand will destroy this army confronting us today;
11 Todas as nações saberão que Israel possui um libertador e um salvador.	11 then all the nations wil know for certain that there is One who ransoms and saves Israel.'
12 Erguendo os olhos, os gentios viram-nos avançar contra eles	12 The foreigners looked up and, seeing the Jews advancing against them,
13 e saíram do acampamento para a luta, enquanto os homens de Judas soavam a trombeta.	13 came out of the camp to join battle. Judas' men sounded the trumpet
14 Travou-se a batalha, mas os inimigos, derrotados, puseram-se em fuga através da planície.	14 and engaged them. The gentiles were defeated and fled towards the plain
15 Os últimos tombaram todos sob a espada, enquanto eram perseguidos até Gazara e as planícies de Iduméia, de Azot e de Jânia. E sucumbiram cerca de três mil.	15 and al the stragglers fel by the sword. The pursuit continued as far as Gezer and the plains ofIdumaea, Azotus and Jamnia, and the enemy lost about three thousand men.
16 Então Judas parou de persegui-los, voltou atrás com suas tropas pelo mesmo caminho,	16 Breaking off the pursuit, Judas returned with his men
17 e disse: Não penseis nos despojos, porque outro combate nos aguarda:	17 and said to the people, 'Never mind the booty, for we have another battle ahead of us.
18 Górgias está perto de nós na montanha, com suas forças. No momento, enfrentai o inimigo e combatei; após isto, podereis apoderar-vos de seus despojos, com toda a segurança.	18 Gorgias and his troops are still near us in the mountains. First stand up to our enemies and fight them,and then you can safely collect the booty.'
19 Ainda Judas falava, quando alguns homens apareceram e olharam de cima da montanha.	19 The words were hardly out of Judas' mouth, when a detachment came into view, peering down fromthe mountain.
20 Viram que o exército tinha sido posto em fuga e que o acampamento se queimava porque a fumaça que se percebia indicava o que se passara.	20 Observing that their own troops had been routed and that the camp had been fired -- since the smoke,which they could see, attested the fact-
21 À vista disso todos foram tomados de grande espanto e, certificando-se de que o exército de Judas se achava na planície, pronto para o combate,	21 they were panic-stricken at the sight; and when, furthermore, they saw Judas' troops drawn up forbattle on the plain,
22 fugiram todos para terra estrangeira.	22 they al fled into Philistine territory.
23 Judas voltou para pilhar o acampamento, e seus homens apoderaram-se de muito ouro, prata, jacinto, púrpura marinha, e de grandes riquezas.	23 Judas then turned back to plunder the camp, and a large sum in gold and silver, with violet and sea-purple stuffs, and many other valuables were carried off.
24 Ao voltarem, cantavam hinos e elevavam ao céu os louvores do Senhor, porque ele é bom e sua misericórdia é eterna.	24 On their return, the Jews chanted praises to Heaven, singing, 'He is kind and his love is everlasting!'
25 Israel foi, com efeito, naquele dia salvo de um grande perigo.	25 That day had seen a remarkable deliverance in Israel.
26 Os gentios que escaparam vieram contar a Lísias os acontecimentos,	26 Those of the foreigners who had escaped came and gave Lysias an account of all that had happened.
27 o qual ficou consternado e abatido ouvindo-os, porque Israel não tinha sido tratado como ele quis, e porque as ordens do rei não tinham sido cumpridas.	27 The news shocked and dismayed him, for affairs in Israel had not gone as he intended, and the resultwas quite the opposite to what the king had ordered.
28 Por isso, no ano seguinte, reuniu Lísias sessenta mil infantes escolhidos e cinco mil cavaleiros para acabar com os judeus.	28 The next year he mobilised sixty thousand picked troops and five thousand cavalry with the intentionof finishing off the Jews.
29 Esse exército veio da Iduméia acampar em Betsur. Judas foi-lhe ao encontro com dez mil homens.	29 They advanced into Idumaea and made their base at Beth-Zur, where Judas met them with tenthousand men.
30 Tendo ante os olhos esse poderoso exército, rezou nestes termos: Sede bendito, Salvador de Israel, vós que quebrastes a força do poderoso pela mão do vosso servo Davi e entregastes os exércitos estrangeiros nas mãos de Jônatas e do seu escudeiro.	30 When he saw their military strength he offered this prayer, 'Blessed are you, Saviour of Israel, whoshattered the mighty warrior's attack at the hand of your servant David, and delivered the Philistine camp into thehands of Jonathan son of Saul, and his armour-bearer.
31 Entregai esse exército ao poder do povo de Israel e confundi nossos inimigos com suas tropas e sua cavalaria.	31 Crush this expedition in the same way at the hands of your people Israel; let their troops and cavalrybring them nothing but shame.
32 Inspirai-lhes o terror, fazei derreter seu orgulho audaz. Que eles sejam sacudidos e pisados.	32 Sow panic in their ranks, confound the confidence they put in their numbers and send them reeling indefeat.
33 Derribai-os sob a espada dos que vos amam e que todos aqueles que conhecem vosso nome cantem vossos louvores.	33 Overthrow them by the sword of those who love you, and all who acknowledge your name wil singyour praises.'
34 Travou-se então o combate, e do exército de Lísias tombaram cinco mil homens, que sucumbiram diante deles.	34 The two forces engaged, and five thousand men of Lysias' troops fel in hand-to-hand fighting.
35 Vendo seu exército posto em fuga e os judeus cheios de bravura, prontos a viver ou a morrer valentemente, voltou Lísias a Antioquia para arregimentar tropas de mercenários, com o intuito de reaparecer na Judéia com um exército mais forte.	35 Seeing the rout of his army and the courage of Judas' troops and their readiness to live or die nobly,Lysias withdrew to Antioch, where he recruited mercenaries for a further invasion of Judaea in even greaterstrength.
36 Judas e seus irmãos disseram então: Eis que nossos inimigos estão aniquilados; subamos agora a purificar e consagrar de novo os lugares santos.	36 Judas and his brothers then said, 'Now that our enemies have been defeated, let us go up to purifythe sanctuary and dedicate it.'
37 Reunido todo o exército, subiram à montanha de Sião.	37 So they marshal ed the whole army, and went up to Mount Zion.
38 Contemplaram a desolação dos lugares santos, o altar profanado, as portas queimadas, os átrios cheios de arbustos que tinham nascido como num bosque ou sobre as colinas, os aposentos demolidos.	38 There they found the sanctuary deserted, the altar desecrated, the gates burnt down, and vegetationgrowing in the courts as it might in a wood or on some mountain, while the storerooms were in ruins.
39 Rasgando suas vestes, eles se lamentaram muito e cobriram as cabeças com cinza,	39 They tore their garments and mourned bitterly, putting dust on their heads.
40 prostraram-se com o rosto por terra, tocaram as trombetas e ergueram clamores ao céu.	40 They prostrated themselves on the ground, and when the trumpets gave the signal they cried aloud toHeaven.
41 Então Judas encarregou alguns homens de combater os soldados da cidadela, enquanto purificavam o templo.	41 Judas then ordered his men to keep the Citadel garrison engaged until he had purified the sanctuary.
42 Escolheu sacerdotes sem mancha e zelosos pela lei,	42 Next, he selected priests who were blameless and zealous for the Law
43 os quais purificaram o templo, transportando para um lugar impuro as pedras contaminadas.	43 to purify the sanctuary and remove the stones of the 'Pollution' to some unclean place.
44 Consultaram-se entre si, o que se deveria fazer do altar dos holocaustos, que havia sido profanado, 45. e tomaram a excelente resolução de demoli-lo, para que não recaísse sobre eles o opróbrio vindo da mancha dos gentios. Destruíram-no, portanto,	44 They discussed what should be done about the altar of burnt offering which had been profaned,
	45 and very properly decided to pul it down, rather than later be embarrassed about it since it had beendefiled by the gentiles. They therefore demolished it
46 e transportaram suas pedras a um lugar conveniente sobre a montanha do templo, aguardando a decisão de algum profeta a esse respeito.	46 and deposited the stones in a suitable place on the hil of the Dwel ing to await the appearance of aprophet who should give a ruling about them.
47 Tomaram pedras intactas, segundo a lei, e construíram um novo altar, semelhante ao primeiro.	47 They took unhewn stones, as the Law prescribed, and built a new altar on the lines of the old one.
48 Restauraram também o templo e o interior do templo e purificaram os átrios.	48 They restored the Holy Place and the interior of the Dwel ing, and purified the courts.
49 Fizeram novos vasos sagrados e transportaram ao santuário o candeeiro, o altar dos perfumes, e a mesa.	49 They made new sacred vessels, and brought the lamp-stand, the altar of incense, and the table intothe Temple.
50 Queimaram incenso no altar, acenderam as lâmpadas do candeeiro, para alumiarem o templo,	50 They burned incense on the altar and lit the lamps on the lamp-stand, and these shone inside theTemple.
51 colocaram pães sobre a mesa e suspenderam os véus, terminando completamente seu trabalho.	51 They placed the loaves on the table and hung the curtains and completed al the tasks they hadundertaken.
52 No dia vinte e cinco do nono mês, isto é, do mês de Casleu, do ano cento e quarenta e oito, eles se levantaram muito cedo,	52 On the twenty-fifth of the ninth month, Chislev, in the year 148 they rose at dawn
53 e ofereceram um sacrifício legal sobre o novo altar dos holocautos, que haviam construído.	53 and offered a lawful sacrifice on the new altar of burnt offering which they had made.
54 Foi no mesmo dia e na mesma data em que os gentios o haviam profanado, que o altar foi de novo consagrado ao som de cânticos, das harpas, das liras e dos címbalos.	54 The altar was dedicated, to the sound of hymns, zithers, lyres and cymbals, at the same time of yearand on the same day on which the gentiles had original y profaned it.
55 Todo o povo se prostrou com o rosto em terra para adorar e bendizer no céu aquele que os havia conduzido ao triunfo.	55 The whole people fel prostrate in adoration and then praised Heaven who had granted them success.
56 Prolongaram por oito dias a dedicação do altar, oferecendo com alegria holocaustos e sacrifícios de ações de graças e de louvores.	56 For eight days they celebrated the dedication of the altar, joyful y offering burnt offerings, communionand thanksgiving sacrifices.
57 Adornaram a fachada do templo com coroas de ouro e com pequenos escudos, consagraram as entradas do templo e os quartos, nos quais colocaram portas.	57 They ornamented the front of the Temple with crowns and bosses of gold, renovated the gates andstorerooms, providing the latter with doors.
58 Reinou uma alegria imensa entre o povo e o opróbrio das nações foi afastado.	58 There was no end to the rejoicing among the people, since the disgrace inflicted by the gentiles hadbeen effaced.
59 Foi estabelecido por Judas e seus irmãos, e por toda a assembléia de Israel que os dias da dedicação do altar seriam celebrados cada ano em sua data própria, durante oito dias, a partir do dia vinte e cinco do mês de Casleu, e isto com alegria e regozijo.	59 Judas, with his brothers and the whole assembly of Israel, made it a law that the days of thededication of the altar should be celebrated yearly at the proper season, for eight days beginning on the twenty-fifth of the month of Chislev, with rejoicing and gladness.
60 Na mesma época cercaram a montanha de Sião com uma alta muralha com fortes torres, para que não	60 They then proceeded to build high wal s with strong towers round Mount Zion, to prevent the gentilesfrom coming and riding roughshod over it as in the past.
61 Judas pôs ali tropas para guardá-la e fortificou também Betsur para protegê-la, a fim de que o povo tivesse uma muralha do lado da Iduméia.	61 Judas stationed a garrison there to guard it; he also fortified Beth-Zur, so that the people would havea fortress confronting Idumaea.
