SAGRADA BIBLIA	DOUAI-RHEIMS
1 Arfaxad, rei dos medos, submetera ao seu império um grande número de nações. Ele edificou uma fortaleza de pedras polidas, à qual deu o nome de Ecbátana.	1 Now Arphaxad king of the Medes had brought many nations under his dominions, and he built a very strong city, which he called Ecbatana,
2 Cercou-a de muralhas de setenta côvados de altura e trinta de largura, e pôs-lhe torres de cem côvados de altura.	2 Of stones squared and hewed: he made the walls thereof seventy cubits broad, and thirty cubits high, and the towers thereof he made a hundred cubits high. But on the square of them, each side was extended the space of twenty feet.
3 Estas eram de forma quadrada, e seus lados estendiam-se por um espaço de vinte pés. As portas tinham uma altura proporcionada à das torres.	3 And he made the gates thereof according to the height of the towers:
4 Ele gloriava-se do poder invencível do seu exército e da imponência de seus carros.	4 And he gloried as a mighty one in the force of his army and in the glory of his chariots.
5 Ora, no décimo segundo ano de seu reinado, Nabucodonosor, que reinava sobre os assírios em Nínive, a grande cidade, fez guerra a Arfaxad, e venceu-o	5 Now in the twelfth year of his reign, Nabuchodonosor king of the Assyrians, who reigned in Ninive the great city, fought against Arphaxad and overcame him,
6 na grande planície chamada Ragau. Aliaram-se-lhe todos os habitantes das regiões vizinhas do Tigre, do Eufrates e do Jadason, na planície de Erioc, rei dos eliceus.	6 In the great plain which is called Ragua, about the Euphrates, and the Tigris, and the Jadason, in the plain of Erioch the king of the Elicians.
7 Então engrandeceu-se o reino de Nabucodonosor e seu coração encheu-se de orgulho. Mandou emissários a todos os habitantes da Cilícia, de Damasco, do Líbano,	7 Then was the kingdom of Nabuchodonosor exalted, and his heart was elevated: and he sent to all that dwelt in Cilicia and Damascus, and Libanus,
8 aos povos do Carmelo e de Cedar, aos galileus, na grande planície de Esdrelon,	8 And to the nations that are in Carmelus, and Cedar, and to the inhabitants of Galilee in the great plain of Asdrelon,
9 aos habitantes de Samaria e aos povos de além do Jordão até Jerusalém, a toda a terra de Gessém e até aos confins da Etiópia.	9 And to all that were in Samaria, and beyond the river Jordan even to Jerusalem, and all the land of Jesse till you come to the borders of Ethiopia.
10 A todos esses povos enviou Nabucodonosor emissários,	10 To all these Nabuchodonosor king of the Assyrians, sent messengers:
11 mas todos protestaram unanimemente e os despediram de mãos vazias, chegando até a expulsá-los com desprezo.	11 But they all with one mind refused, and sent them back empty, and rejected them without honour.
12 À vista disso, encheu-se de cólera o rei Nabucodonosor contra todos esses povos, e jurou pelo seu trono e pelo seu reino que havia de tomar vingança de todos eles.	12 Then king Nabuchodonosor being angry against all that land, swore by his throne and kingdom that he would revenge himself of all those countries.
