1 I figli di Ruben e i figli di Gad avevano una quantità grande di bestiame: quando videro che la terra di Iazer e la terra di Galaad era un posto da bestiame,	1 Now, the Reubenites and Gadites owned very large herds of cattle. Having seen that the territories ofJazer and Gilead formed an ideal region for raising stock,
2 i figli di Gad e i figli di Ruben vennero a dire a Mosè, al sacerdote Eleazaro e ai capi della comunità:	2 the Gadites and Reubenites went to Moses, the priest Eleazar and the leaders of the community, andsaid to them,
3 "Atarot, Dibon, Iazer, Nimra, Chesbon, Eleale, Sebam, Nebo e Beon,	3 'The territory of Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo and Beon,
4 terre che il Signore ha colpito davanti alla comunità d'Israele, sono terre per bestiame, e i tuoi servi hanno molto bestiame".	4 which Yahweh has conquered before the advancing community of Israel, is ideal land for raisingstock, and your servants are cattle breeders.
5 Soggiunsero: "Se abbiamo trovato grazia ai tuoi occhi, sia data questa terra ai tuoi servi in possesso: non farci passare il Giordano".	5 So', they said, 'if you approve, give your servants this land for us to own; do not make us cross theJordan.'
6 Mosè disse ai figli di Gad e ai figli di Ruben: "I vostri fratelli andrebbero forse in guerra e voi stareste qui?	6 Moses said to the Gadites and Reubenites, 'Do you intend your brothers to go into battle while youstay here?
7 Perché distogliete il cuore dei figli d'Israele dal passare alla terra che il Signore vi ha dato?	7 Why are you discouraging the Israelites from crossing to the country which Yahweh has given them?
8 Così fecero i vostri padri, quando li mandai da Kades-Barnea a vedere la terra:	8 Your fathers behaved in the same way when I sent them from Kadesh-Barnea to see the country,
9 salirono fino alla valle di Escol, videro la terra e distolsero il cuore dei figli d'Israele dall'entrare nella terra che il Signore aveva dato a loro.	9 for, having gone as far as the Val ey of Eshcol and seen the country, they discouraged the Israelitesfrom entering the country which Yahweh had given them.
10 In quel giorno lo sdegno del Signore divampò e giurò dicendo:	10 Hence Yahweh's anger was aroused that day and he swore this oath,
11 "Gli uomini che sono saliti dall'Egitto, dai vent'anni in su, non vedranno mai il suolo che ho giurato ad Abramo, Isacco e Giacobbe, poiché non mi hanno seguito completamente,	11 "No man of twenty years and over, who left Egypt, shal set eyes on the country which I promised onoath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob . . . , for they have not fol owed me absolutely,

13 Lo sdegno del Signore divampò contro Israele e li fece errare nel deserto per quarant'anni, fino all'estinzione di tutta la generazione che aveva fatto il male agli occhi del Signore.	13 Yahweh's anger being aroused by Israel, he made them wander in the desert for forty years, untilthe generation that offended Yahweh had all disappeared.
14 Ed ecco che insorgete al posto dei vostri padri, genìa di uomini peccatori, per aumentare ancora lo sdegno del Signore contro Israele:	14 And now you rise up in your father's place, offshoot of sinful stock, to increase Yahweh's burninganger with Israel even more!
15 perché, se vi distogliete da lui, lo farà ancora stare nel deserto e porterete alla perdizione tutto questo popolo".	15 If you turn away from him, he wil prolong the time spent in the desert, and you wil bring about thisentire people's ruin.'
16 Quelli si avvicinarono a lui e dissero: "Per il nostro bestiame costruiremo qui recinti e città per i nostri fanciulli,	16 They came to Moses and said, 'We should like to build sheepfolds here for our flocks and towns forour little ones.
17 ma noi ci terremo armati di fronte ai figli d'Israele, finché non li avremo portati al loro luogo: i nostri figli staranno nelle città fortificate, separati dagli abitanti del paese.	17 We ourselves wil take up arms and lead the Israelites until we have brought them to the placeappointed for them, while our little ones stay in the fortified towns to be safe from the local inhabitants.
18 Non torneremo alle nostre città finché i figli d'Israele non avranno ricevuto la loro eredità,	18 We wil not return to our homes until every one of the Israelites has taken possession of his heritage.
19 perché non erediteremo con loro al di là del Giordano e oltre: poiché la nostra eredità ci è toccata da questa parte del Giordano, a oriente".	19 For we shall have no heritage with them on the other bank of the Jordan or beyond, since ourheritage has fal en to us here, east of the Jordan.'
20 Mosè disse loro: "Se farete queste cose: vi armerete davanti al Signore per la guerra,	20 Moses said to them, 'If you do as you have said, if you are prepared to fight before Yahweh,
21 ogni armato tra voi passerà il Giordano davanti al Signore, finché avrà scacciato i suoi nemici davanti a lui	21 and if al those of you who bear arms cross the Jordan before Yahweh, until he has driven all hisenemies out before him,
22 e la terra sarà stata soggiogata davanti al Signore, e poi tornerete, sarete innocenti davanti al Signore e a Israele e avrete questa terra, come vostro possesso davanti al Signore.	22 then, once the country has become subject to Yahweh, you may go back, and will have dischargedyour obligation to Yahweh and Israel, and Yahweh wil consider this territory yours.
23 Se voi non farete così, peccherete contro il Signore, e sappiate che i vostri peccati vi raggiungeranno.	23 But if you do not, you wil sin against Yahweh, and be sure your sin wil find you out.
24 Costruite dunque città per i vostri figli e recinti per le vostre pecore, ma fate quello che la vostra bocca ha promesso".	24 Build towns, then, for your little ones and folds for your flocks; but do what you have promised.'
25 I figli di Gad e i figli di Ruben dissero a Mosè: "I tuoi servi faranno come ordina il mio signore.	25 The Gadites and Reubenites said to Moses, 'Your servants will do as my lord directs.
26 I nostri figli, le nostre donne, i nostri armenti e tutto il nostro bestiame rimarranno nelle città di Galaad,	26 Our little ones, our wives, our flocks and al our livestock wil stay in the towns of Gilead,
27 e i tuoi servi, ogni armato dell'esercito, passerà davanti al Signore in guerra, come dice il mio signore".	27 but your servants, each armed for war, will cross in Yahweh's name and fight, as my lord says.'
28 Mosè diede ordini per loro al sacerdote Eleazaro, a Giosuè, figlio di Nun e ai capifamiglia delle tribù dei figli d'Israele.	28 So Moses gave orders about them to the priest Eleazar, Joshua son of Nun, and the heads offamilies in the Israelite tribes.
29 Mosè disse loro: "Se i figli di Gad e i figli di Ruben, tutti gli armati per la guerra, passeranno con voi il Giordano davanti al Signore, e la terra sarà soggiogata davanti a voi, darete loro il paese di Galaad in possesso.	29 Moses said to them, 'If the Gadites and Reubenites, al those under arms, cross the Jordan with youto fight in Yahweh's name, then, once the country has become subject to you, you wil give them the territory ofGilead as theirs.
30 Ma se non passeranno armati con voi, si prenderanno il possesso in mezzo a voi nella terra di Canaan".	30 But if they will not cross with you under arms, they wil receive their domains in Canaan with the restof you.'
31 I figli di Gad e i figli di Ruben risposero: "Quello che il Signore ha detto ai tuoi servi noi lo faremo:	31 To this, the Gadites and Reubenites replied, 'What Yahweh has said to your servants, we shal do.
32 passeremo armati davanti al Signore nella terra di Canaan, ma la proprietà della nostra eredità resti per noi oltre il Giordano".	32 Under arms, we shall cross in Yahweh's name into Canaan, so that ownership of our heritage onthis side of the Jordan will be ours.'
33 Mosè diede ai figli di Gad, ai figli di Ruben e a metà tribù di Manasse, figlio di Giuseppe, il regno di Sicon, re amorreo, e il regno di Og, re di Basan, la terra con le sue città comprese entro i confini, le città della terra che si stendeva intorno.	33 Moses then gave them -- the Gadites, the Reubenites and the half-tribe of Manasseh son of Joseph-- the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the country and the townswithin its territory, and the country's frontier-towns.
34 I figli di Gad costruirono Dibon, Atarot, Aroer,	34 The Gadites rebuilt Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer,
35 Aterot-Sofan, Iazer, Iogbea,	35 Atroth-Shophan, Jazer, Jogbehah,
36 Bet-Nimra, Bet-Aran, città fortificate e recinti per pecore.	36 Beth-Nimrah and Beth-Haran as fortified towns with folds for the flocks.
37 I figli di Ruben costruirono Chesbon, Eleale, Kiriataim,	37 The Reubenites rebuilt Heshbon, Elealeh, Kiriathaim,
38 Nebo, Baal-Meon, i cui nomi furono cambiati, e Sibma: e diedero il nome alle città che costruirono.	38 Nebo and Baal-Meon (the names of which were altered), and Sibmah, giving new names to thetowns which they rebuilt.
39 I figli di Machir, figlio di Manasse, andarono nel Galaad, lo presero scacciando l'Amorrita che vi si trovava.	39 The descendants of Machir son of Manasseh went to Gilead. They conquered it and drove out theAmorites who were there.
40 Mosè diede il Galaad a Machir, figlio di Manasse, che vi abitò.	40 Moses gave Gilead to Machir son of Manasseh, and he settled there.
41 Iair, figlio di Manasse, andò, prese i loro villaggi, e li chiamò villaggi di Iair.	41 Jair son of Manasseh went and seized their encampments, renaming them the Encampments ofJair.
42 Poi Nobach andò e prese Kenat e le sue dipendenze e la chiamò Nobach.	42 Nobah went and seized Kenat with its dependent townships, and cal ed it Nobah after himself.
