1 I figli di Ruben e i figli di Gad avevano una quantità grande di bestiame: quando videro che la terra di Iazer e la terra di Galaad era un posto da bestiame,	1 Now the Reubenites and Gadites had a very large number of livestock. Noticing that the land of Jazer and of Gilead was grazing country,
2 i figli di Gad e i figli di Ruben vennero a dire a Mosè, al sacerdote Eleazaro e ai capi della comunità:	2 they came to Moses and the priest Eleazar and to the princes of the community and said,
3 "Atarot, Dibon, Iazer, Nimra, Chesbon, Eleale, Sebam, Nebo e Beon,	3 "The region of Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo and Baal-meon,

7 Perché distogliete il cuore dei figli d'Israele dal passare alla terra che il Signore vi ha dato?	7 Why do you wish to discourage the Israelites from crossing to the land the LORD has given them?
8 Così fecero i vostri padri, quando li mandai da Kades-Barnea a vedere la terra:	8 That is just what your fathers did when I sent them from Kadesh-barnea to reconnoiter the land.
9 salirono fino alla valle di Escol, videro la terra e distolsero il cuore dei figli d'Israele dall'entrare nella terra che il Signore aveva dato a loro.	9 They went up to the Wadi Eshcol and reconnoitered the land, then so discouraged the Israelites that they would not enter the land the LORD had given them.
10 In quel giorno lo sdegno del Signore divampò e giurò dicendo:	10 At that time the wrath of the LORD flared up, and he swore,
11 "Gli uomini che sono saliti dall'Egitto, dai vent'anni in su, non vedranno mai il suolo che ho giurato ad Abramo, Isacco e Giacobbe, poiché non mi hanno seguito completamente,	11 'Because they have not followed me unreservedly, none of these men of twenty years or more who have come up from Egypt shall ever see this country I promised under oath to Abraham and Isaac and Jacob,

13 Lo sdegno del Signore divampò contro Israele e li fece errare nel deserto per quarant'anni, fino all'estinzione di tutta la generazione che aveva fatto il male agli occhi del Signore.	13 So in his anger with the Israelites the LORD made them wander in the desert forty years, until the whole generation that had done evil in the sight of the LORD had died out.
14 Ed ecco che insorgete al posto dei vostri padri, genìa di uomini peccatori, per aumentare ancora lo sdegno del Signore contro Israele:	14 And now here you are, a brood of sinners, rising up in your fathers' place to add still more to the LORD'S blazing wrath against the Israelites.
15 perché, se vi distogliete da lui, lo farà ancora stare nel deserto e porterete alla perdizione tutto questo popolo".	15 If you turn away from following him, he will make them stay still longer in the desert, and so you will bring about the ruin of this whole nation."
16 Quelli si avvicinarono a lui e dissero: "Per il nostro bestiame costruiremo qui recinti e città per i nostri fanciulli,	16 But they were insistent with him: "We wish only to build sheepfolds here for our flocks, and towns for our families;
17 ma noi ci terremo armati di fronte ai figli d'Israele, finché non li avremo portati al loro luogo: i nostri figli staranno nelle città fortificate, separati dagli abitanti del paese.	17 but we ourselves will march as troops in the van of the Israelites, until we have led them to their destination. Meanwhile our families can remain here in the fortified towns, safe from attack by the natives.
18 Non torneremo alle nostre città finché i figli d'Israele non avranno ricevuto la loro eredità,	18 We will not return to our homes until every one of the Israelites has taken possession of his heritage,
19 perché non erediteremo con loro al di là del Giordano e oltre: poiché la nostra eredità ci è toccata da questa parte del Giordano, a oriente".	19 and will not claim any heritage with them once we cross the Jordan, so long as we receive a heritage for ourselves on this eastern side of the Jordan."
20 Mosè disse loro: "Se farete queste cose: vi armerete davanti al Signore per la guerra,	20 Moses said to them in reply: "If you keep your word to march as troops in the LORD'S vanguard
21 ogni armato tra voi passerà il Giordano davanti al Signore, finché avrà scacciato i suoi nemici davanti a lui	21 and to cross the Jordan in full force before the LORD until he has driven his enemies out of his way
22 e la terra sarà stata soggiogata davanti al Signore, e poi tornerete, sarete innocenti davanti al Signore e a Israele e avrete questa terra, come vostro possesso davanti al Signore.	22 and the land is subdued before him, then you may return here, quit of every obligation to the LORD and to Israel, and this region shall be your possession before the LORD.
23 Se voi non farete così, peccherete contro il Signore, e sappiate che i vostri peccati vi raggiungeranno.	23 But if you do not do this, you will sin against the LORD, and you can be sure that you will not escape the consequences of your sin.
24 Costruite dunque città per i vostri figli e recinti per le vostre pecore, ma fate quello che la vostra bocca ha promesso".	24 Build the towns, then, for your families, and the folds for your flocks, but also fulfill your express promise."
25 I figli di Gad e i figli di Ruben dissero a Mosè: "I tuoi servi faranno come ordina il mio signore.	25 The Gadites and Reubenites answered Moses, "Your servants will do as you command, my lord.
26 I nostri figli, le nostre donne, i nostri armenti e tutto il nostro bestiame rimarranno nelle città di Galaad,	26 While our wives and children, our herds and other livestock remain in the towns of Gilead,
27 e i tuoi servi, ogni armato dell'esercito, passerà davanti al Signore in guerra, come dice il mio signore".	27 all your servants will go across as armed troops to battle before the LORD, just as your lordship says."
28 Mosè diede ordini per loro al sacerdote Eleazaro, a Giosuè, figlio di Nun e ai capifamiglia delle tribù dei figli d'Israele.	28 Moses, therefore, gave this order in their regard to the priest Eleazar, to Joshua, son of Nun, and to the heads of the ancestral tribes of the Israelites:
29 Mosè disse loro: "Se i figli di Gad e i figli di Ruben, tutti gli armati per la guerra, passeranno con voi il Giordano davanti al Signore, e la terra sarà soggiogata davanti a voi, darete loro il paese di Galaad in possesso.	29 "If all the Gadites and Reubenites cross the Jordan with you as combat troops before the LORD, you shall give them Gilead as their property when the land has been subdued before you.
30 Ma se non passeranno armati con voi, si prenderanno il possesso in mezzo a voi nella terra di Canaan".	30 But if they will not go across with you as combat troops before the LORD, you shall bring their wives and children and livestock across before you into Canaan, and they shall have their property with you in the land of Canaan."
31 I figli di Gad e i figli di Ruben risposero: "Quello che il Signore ha detto ai tuoi servi noi lo faremo:	31 To this the Gadites and Reubenites replied, "We will do what the LORD has commanded us, your servants.
32 passeremo armati davanti al Signore nella terra di Canaan, ma la proprietà della nostra eredità resti per noi oltre il Giordano".	32 We ourselves will go across into the land of Canaan as troops before the LORD, but we will retain our hereditary property on this side of the Jordan."
33 Mosè diede ai figli di Gad, ai figli di Ruben e a metà tribù di Manasse, figlio di Giuseppe, il regno di Sicon, re amorreo, e il regno di Og, re di Basan, la terra con le sue città comprese entro i confini, le città della terra che si stendeva intorno.	33 So Moses gave them (the Gadites and Reubenites, as well as half the tribe of Manasseh, son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon, king of the Amorites, and the kingdom of Og, king of Bashan,) the land with its towns and the districts that surrounded them.
34 I figli di Gad costruirono Dibon, Atarot, Aroer,	34 The Gadites rebuilt the fortified towns of Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer,
35 Aterot-Sofan, Iazer, Iogbea,	35 Atroth-shophan, Jazer, Jogbehah,
36 Bet-Nimra, Bet-Aran, città fortificate e recinti per pecore.	36 Beth-nimrah and Beth-haran, and they built sheepfolds.
37 I figli di Ruben costruirono Chesbon, Eleale, Kiriataim,	37 The Reubenites rebuilt Heshbon, Elealeh, Kiriathaim,
38 Nebo, Baal-Meon, i cui nomi furono cambiati, e Sibma: e diedero il nome alle città che costruirono.	38 Nebo, Baal-meon (names to be changed!), and Sibmah. These towns, which they rebuilt, they called by their old names.

41 Iair, figlio di Manasse, andò, prese i loro villaggi, e li chiamò villaggi di Iair.	41 Jair, a Manassehite clan, campaigned against the tent villages, captured them and called them Havvoth-jair.
