1 Beato l'uomo che non incespica con la lingua, e non è afflitto dalla pena del peccato.	1 Happy the man whose mouth brings him no grief, who is not stung by remorse for sin.
2 Beato chi la coscienza non rimprovera e non ha perduto la sua speranza.	2 Happy the man whose conscience does not reproach him, who has not lost hope.
3 All'uomo gretto la ricchezza non sta bene; forse serve l'argento a chi è avido?	3 Wealth ill becomes the mean man; and to the miser, of what use is gold?
4 Chi raccoglie con le privazioni raccoglie per gli altri; costoro potranno sperperare i suoi beni.	4 What he denies himself he collects for others, and in his possessions a stranger will revel.
5 Chi è nocivo per sé come sarà utile agli altri? Egli non si godrà le sue ricchezze.	5 To whom will he be generous who is stingy with himself and does not enjoy what is his own?
6 Non c'è peggio dell'uomo che risparmia con se stesso, questa è la ricompensa del suo errore:	6 None is more stingy than he who is stingy with himself; he punishes his own miserliness.
7 se fa il bene lo fa per distrazione, ma alla fine sarà manifesto il suo errore.	7 If ever he is generous, it is by mistake; and in the end he displays his greed.
8 L'uomo dall'occhio cupido è un perverso, volta la sua faccia e non vede il bisogno.	8 In the miser's opinion his share is too small;
9 L'occhio cupido non si sazia con la sua parte, l'iniqua ingiustizia gli dissecca l'anima.	9 he refuses his neighbor and brings ruin on himself.
10 L'occhio malvagio invidia il pane altrui, perciò la sua tavola è vuota.	10 The miser's eye is rapacious for bread, but on his own table he sets it stale.
11 Figlio, goditi quanto possiedi, ma offri al Signore sacrifici generosi.	11 My son, use freely whatever you have and enjoy it as best you can;
12 Ricòrdati che la morte non perde tempo, né ti è stato rivelato il patto con gl'inferi.	12 Remember that death does not tarry, nor have you been told the grave's appointed time.
13 Prima della morte fa' del bene all'amico, impégnati quanto puoi per aiutarlo.	13 Before you die, be good to your friend, and give him a share in what you possess.
14 Non privarti dei giorni lieti, e non ti sfugga nulla di un desiderio legittimo.	14 Deprive not yourself of present good things, let no choice portion escape you.
15 Non lascerai ad altri il frutto delle tue fatiche, e non passerà agli eredi il frutto dei tuoi sacrifici?	15 Will you not leave your riches to others, and your earnings to be divided by lot?
16 Da' e prendi, goditi la vita, perché negl'inferi non si cerca l'allegria.	16 Give, take, and treat yourself well, for in the nether world there are no joys to seek.
17 Ogni carne invecchia come un mantello, perché da sempre vige questo patto: tu devi morire.	17 All flesh grows old, like a garment; the age-old law is: All must die.
18 Come foglie verdeggianti su florido albero, alcune cadono e altre germogliano, così è per la razza di carne e di sangue, alcuni muoiono e altri nascono.	18 As with the leaves that grow on a vigorous tree: one falls off and another sprouts-- So with the generations of flesh and blood: one dies and another is born.
19 Ogni opera corruttibile passa, e chi la compie sparisce con essa.	19 All man's works will perish in decay, and his handiwork will follow after him.
20 Beato l'uomo che si dedica alla sapienza, che riflette con l'intelligenza,	20 Happy the man who meditates on wisdom, and reflects on knowledge;
21 che medita in cuore le sue vie e penetra nei suoi segreti.	21 Who ponders her ways in his heart, and understands her paths;
22 Esci dietro ad essa come un cacciatore, e sta' in agguato là dove passa.	22 Who pursues her like a scout, and lies in wait at her entry way;
23 Chi la spia attraverso le finestre, l'ascolta attraverso le sue porte,	23 Who peeps through her windows, and listens at her doors;
24 s'accampa vicino alla sua casa, pianta il picchetto tra le sue mura	24 Who encamps near her house, and fastens his tent pegs next to her walls;
25 e pone la tenda al suo fianco, abitando nella dimora d'ogni bene,	25 Who pitches his tent beside her, and lives as her welcome neighbor;
26 costui ha posto i figli al suo riparo e risiede all'ombra dei suoi rami;	26 Who builds his nest in her leafage, and lodges in her branches;
27 essa lo proteggerà dal calore ed egli abiterà nella sua gloria.	27 Who takes shelter with her from the heat, and dwells in her home.
