1 And when the entire army had heard that Holofernes was beheaded, reason and resolution fled from them, and, being moved by trembling and fear alone, they thought only to flee to safety.	1 Quando seppero dell’accaduto, anche coloro che erano sotto le tende ne furono sgomenti;
2 So then, no one spoke with his neighbor, but hanging their heads and leaving everything behind, they hurried to escape from the Hebrews, who, as they had heard, were advancing against them well-armed. And they fled through the ways of the fields and the paths of the hills.	2 su di loro si abbatté il terrore e il panico, nessuno più riusciva a rimanere presso il suo vicino, ma dispersi fuggivano con una medesima risoluzione per ogni strada della pianura e della montagna.
3 And so, the sons of Israel, seeing them fleeing, pursued them. And they went down after them, sounding the trumpets and howling.	3 Anche coloro che erano accampati sulla regione montuosa intorno a Betulia si volsero in fuga. Allora gli Israeliti con tutti i guerrieri calarono su di loro.
4 And, since the Assyrians were not united, they rushed headlong in their flight. But the sons of Israel, pursuing like one unit, struck down all they were able to find.	4 Ozia mandò messaggeri a Betomestaim, a Beba, a Khoba, a Kola, a tutto il territorio di Israele per informarli di quanto era accaduto e perché tutti si rovesciassero contro i nemici per farne strage.
5 And so, Uzziah sent messengers through all the cities and regions of Israel.	5 Come udirono i figli di Israele, tutti d’un sol animo si scagliarono addosso a loro e li tagliarono a pezzi fino a Hova. Fecero così anche coloro che erano sopraggiunti da Gerusalemme e da tutta la regione montuosa: difatti era stato loro annunciato quanto era accaduto nell’accampamento dei loro nemici; gli abitanti di Galaad e della Galilea poi li accerchiarono facendone una grande strage finché oltrepassarono Damasco e i suoi confini.
6 And then, every region and every city sent their chosen young men with weapons after them, and they pursued them with the edge of the sword, until they passed through to the extremities of their borders.	6 Gli altri abitanti di Betulia si gettarono sull’accampamento degli Assiri, ne fecero preda ed ebbero di che arricchirsi abbondantemente.
7 But the remainder, who were in Bethulia, entered the camp of the Assyrians and took away the plunder that the Assyrians, in their flight, had left behind, and they were exceedingly burdened.	7 I figli di Israele, tornati dalla strage, si impadronirono di tutto ciò che restava; gli abitanti dei villaggi e dei borghi della regione montuosa si arricchirono di molto bottino; ce n’era un’abbondanza stragrande.
8 In truth, those who returned victorious to Bethulia brought with them everything that was theirs. So there was no numbering their cattle, and beasts, and everything they could carry, so much so that, from the least to the greatest, all were made rich by their spoils.	8 Joakim il gran sacerdote e il consiglio degli anziani dei figli di Israele che abitavano a Gerusalemme vennero ad ammirare la magnifica impresa, che il Signore aveva operato in favore di Israele, a vedere Giuditta e a portarle il saluto.
9 But Joachim, the high priest, came from Jerusalem to Bethulia with all his elders to see Judith.	9 Quando entrarono nella sua casa, tutti con una sola voce la lodarono e le dissero: «Tu l’orgoglio di Gerusalemme, tu l’onore magnifico di Israele, tu la grande gloria del nostro popolo.
10 And when she had gone out to him, they all blessed her with one voice, saying: “You are the glory of Jerusalem, you are the joy of Israel, you are the honor of our people.	10 Con la tua mano hai saputo compiere tutto ciò, hai procurato grande benessere a Israele, Dio in te ha trovato le sue compiacenze. Sii tu perennemente benedetta da parte del Signore onnipotente». Tutto il popolo soggiunse: «Così sia».
11 For you have acted manfully, and your heart has been strengthened. For you loved chastity, and, after your husband, you have not known any other. Therefore, also the hand of the Lord has strengthened you, and, therefore, you will be blessed for all eternity.”	11 Per trenta giorni tutto il popolo fece bottino dell’accampamento. A Giuditta si cedette la tenda di Oloferne, tutta l’argenteria, i divani, i catini con tutto il mobilio; essa prese tutto e lo caricò sulla sua mula, attaccò i carri e vi accatastò sopra tutte quelle robe.
12 And all the people said: “Amen. Amen.”	12 Tutte le donne di Israele correvano insieme a vederla, la lodavano ed eseguivano danze per lei. Essa prese tirsi in mano e li distribuì alle donne che erano con lei;
13 But all of thirty days were scarcely enough for the people of Israel to collect the spoils of the Assyrians.	13 si coronò di rami d’olivo, essa e quelle che erano con lei; si mise alla testa di tutto il popolo per guidare le donne nella danza; seguivano tutti gli uomini di Israele con corone sulle armature e inni sulle bocche.
14 But moreover, all of those things that were clearly the particular possessions of Holofernes they gave to Judith: with gold, and silver, and garments, and gems, and furniture. And these were all delivered to her by the people.	14 In mezzo a tutto Israele, Giuditta intonò questo inno di ringraziamento e il popolo tutto a gran voce ripeteva questo canto di lode. Disse Giuditta:
15 And all the people rejoiced, with the women, and the virgins, and the young men, playing on wind instruments and stringed instruments.
