1 Now Korah son of Izhar, son of Kohath the Levite, and the Reubenites Dathan and Abiram sons ofEliab, and On son of Peleth were proud	1 Ora Korakh figlio di Jizehar, figlio di Kehat, figlio di Levi; Datan e Abiram figli di Eliab, figlio di Pallu, figlio di Ruben,
2 and rebel ed against Moses with two hundred and fifty Israelites who were leaders of the community,prominent at the solemn feasts, men of repute.	2 con duecentocinquanta uomini tra i figli di Israele, principi della comunità, membri del consiglio e uomini stimati, insorsero contro Mosè.
3 These banded together against Moses and Aaron and said to them, 'You take too much onyourselves! The whole community, al its members, are consecrated, and Yahweh lives among them. Why setyourselves higher than Yahweh's community?'	3 Si radunarono presso Mosè e Aronne e dissero loro: «Basta! Tutta la comunità, tutti i suoi membri sono consacrati e Jahvè è in mezzo a loro. Perché dunque vi innalzate sopra l’assemblea di Jahvè?»
4 On hearing this, Moses threw himself on his face.	4 Udito ciò, Mosè cadde con la faccia a terra.
5 Then he said to Korah and al in his party, 'Tomorrow morning Yahweh wil reveal who is his, who theconsecrated man whom he wil al ow to approach him. The one he al ows to approach is the one whom he haschosen.	5 Disse poi a Korakh e alla sua compagnia: «Domani mattina Jahvè farà conoscere chi è suo e chi è il consacrato al quale egli permette di avvicinarsi a Lui. Egli farà avvicinare a sé chi avrà scelto.
6 This is what you must do: take the censers of Korah and al in his party,	6 Fate così: prendete i bracieri di Korakh e di tutta la sua compagnia,
7 put fire in them and put incense in them before Yahweh tomorrow, and the one whom Yahwehchooses wil be the consecrated man. Levites, you take too much on yourselves!'	7 mettete fuoco in essi e domani ponete su di essi profumo di erbe aromatiche al cospetto di Jahvè. Sarà il consacrato colui che Jahvè sceglierà. Basta, o figli di Levi».
8 Moses then said to Korah, 'Now listen, you Levites!	8 Mosè disse a Korakh: «Ascoltate, o figli di Levi!
9 Is it not enough for you that the God of Israel has singled you out of the community of Israel, andcal ed you to be near him, to serve in Yahweh's Dwel ing and to represent the community by officiating on itsbehalf?	9 È troppo poco per voi che il Dio di Israele vi abbia separato dal resto della comunità di Israele e vi abbia avvicinato a sé affinché compiate il servizio della Dimora di Jahvè e siate a disposizione della comunità per esercitare per essa l’ufficio divino?
10 He has cal ed you to be near him, you and al your brother Levites with you, and now you want to bepriests as wel !	10 Egli ha fatto avvicinare te e, con te, tutti i tuoi fratelli figli di Levi, e ora richiedete anche il sacerdozio?
11 For which reason, you and al in your party have banded together against Yahweh himself: for whatis Aaron, that you should mutter against him?'	11 Perciò tu e la tua compagnia cospirate contro Jahvè. E che cosa è dunque Aronne perché mormoriate contro di lui?»
12 Moses then summoned Dathan and Abiram sons of Eliab. They replied, 'We wil not come.	12 Mosè convocò poi Datan e Abiram, figli di Eliab. Ma questi risposero: «Non veniamo.
13 Is it not enough for you to have brought us away from a country flowing with milk and honey to kil usin the desert, without your making yourself our absolute ruler?	13 È forse troppo poco che tu ci abbia fatto uscire da una terra dove scorreva latte e miele per farci morire nel deserto, perché tu voglia anche erigerti a dominatore su di noi?
14 What is more, you have not brought us to a country flowing with milk and honey and you have notgiven us fields and vineyards for our heritage. Do you think you can hoodwink these people? We wil not come.'	14 né ci hai introdotto in una terra dove scorre latte e miele né ci hai dato in eredità un campo e una vigna. Vuoi accecare gli occhi di questi uomini? Noi non veniamo!»
15 Moses flew into a rage and said to Yahweh, 'Disregard their cereal offering! I have not taken somuch as a donkey from them, nor have I wronged any of them.'	15 Mosè ne fu irritatissimo e disse a Jahvè: «Non avere riguardo della loro oblazione! Da essi non ho preso neppure un asino, a loro non ho fatto mai torto alcuno».
16 Moses said to Korah, 'You and all your party, come before Yahweh tomorrow, you and they, andAaron too.	16 Mosè disse a Korakh: «Tu e la tua compagnia sarete domani al cospetto di Jahvè. Tu, essi e Aronne.
17 Each wil take his censer, put incense in it, and bring his censer before Yahweh -- two hundred andfifty censers. You and Aaron too wil each bring his censer.'	17 Ciascuno prenderà il proprio braciere, porrete su di esso profumo di erbe aromatiche. Ognuno presenterà il proprio braciere: duecentocinquanta bracieri. Anche tu e Aronne, ciascuno con il proprio braciere».
18 Each of them took his censer, put fire in it and placed incense on it, and stood at the entrance to theTent of Meeting with Moses and Aaron.	18 Ciascuno prese il proprio braciere, mise in esso fuoco e vi pose sopra profumo di erbe aromatiche. Poi con Mosè e Aronne stettero all'ingresso della Tenda del convegno.
19 Then, Korah having assembled the whole community to confront them at the entrance to the Tent ofMeeting, the glory of Yahweh appeared to the whole community.	19 Quando Korakh ebbe radunato tutta la comunità presso di loro, all’ingresso della Tenda del convegno, allora a tutta la comunità apparve la gloria di Jahvè.
20 Yahweh then spoke to Moses and Aaron. He said,	20 Jahvè parlò a Mosè e ad Aronne:
21 'Get away from this community. I am going to destroy them here and now.'	21 «Separatevi da questa comunità e in un istante la divorerò».
22 They threw themselves on their faces and cried out, 'O God, God of the spirits that give life to everyliving thing, wil you be angry with the whole community because one man has sinned?'	22 Essi caddero con la faccia a terra, dicendo: «O Dio, Dio degli aliti che animano ogni corpo, un solo uomo ha peccato e tu ti irriti contro tutta la comunità?»
23 Yahweh then said to Moses,	23 Jahvè rispose a Mosè:
24 'Speak to the community and say, "Stand wel clear of Korah's tent." '	24 «Dì alla comunità: “Levatevi d’intorno al luogo dove stanno Korakh, Datan e Abiram”».
25 Moses stood up and went to Dathan and Abiram; the elders of Israel fol owed him.	25 Mosè con gli anziani di Israele si alzò è andò verso Datan e Abiram
26 He spoke to the community and said, 'Stand away, I tel you, from the tents of these sinners, andtouch nothing that belongs to them, for fear that with all their sins you too wil be swept away.'	26 e parlò alla comunità: «Toglietevi ora dalle tende di questi uomini perversi e non toccate alcuna cosa che appartenga loro, affinché non periate con tutti i loro peccati».
27 So they moved away from Korah's tent. Dathan and Abiram had come out and were standing attheir tent doors, with their wives, their sons and their little ones.	27 Essi si tolsero d’intorno al luogo dove stavano Korakh, Datan e Abiram. Uscirono Datan e Abiram e stavano all’ingresso delle loro tende con le mogli, i figli e i bambini.
28 Moses said, 'This is how you will know that Yahweh himself has sent me to perform al these tasksand that I am not doing them of my own accord.	28 Mosè disse: «Che Jahvè mi abbia inviato a compiere tutte queste opere e che io non agisca di mia testa lo saprete da ciò:
29 If these people die a natural death such as people commonly die, then Yahweh has not sent me.	29 se costoro moriranno di morte naturale, se saranno visitati con la visita comune a ogni uomo, Jahvè non mi ha inviato;
30 But if Yahweh does something utterly new, if the earth should open its mouth and swal ow them andal their belongings, so that they go down alive to Sheol, then you wil know that they held Yahweh in contempt.'	30 ma se Jahvè opererà qualcosa di grande e meraviglioso, se il suolo spalancherà la bocca inghiottendo loro e ogni loro cosa ed essi discenderanno vivi nello Sheol: allora saprete che questi uomini hanno disprezzato Jahvè».
31 The moment he finished saying all this, the ground split apart under their feet,	31 Appena ebbe finito di pronunciare queste parole, il suolo si sprofondò sotto di loro,
32 the earth opened its mouth and swal owed them, their families, all Korah's people and al theirproperty.	32 la terra aprì la bocca e inghiottì loro con le famiglie, tutti i beni e ogni persona che apparteneva a Korakh.
33 They went down alive to Sheol with al their belongings. The earth closed over them and theydisappeared in the middle of the community.	33 Essi e ogni loro cosa discesero vivi nello Sheol: la terra li ricoprì e disparvero dall’assemblea.
34 At their cries, all the Israelites round them took to their heels, saying, 'We do not want the earth toswal ow us too!'	34 Alle loro grida, tutto Israele, che era intorno a loro, fuggì dicendo: «Non ci inghiotta la terra!»
35 Fire then shot out from Yahweh and consumed the two hundred and fifty men offering incense.	35 Un fuoco scaturì da Jahvè e divorò i duecentocinquanta uomini che presentavano il profumo di erbe aromatiche.
