Job 22

1 Eliphaz of Teman spoke next. He said:	1 Elifaz di Teman prese a dire:
2 Can a human being contribute anything to God, when even someone intel igent can benefit onlyhimself?	2 «Può forse l’uomo giovare a Dio, dato che il saggio può giovare solo a se stesso?
3 Does Shaddai derive any benefit from your uprightness, or profit from your blameless conduct?	3 Quale interesse ne viene all’Onnipotente che tu sia giusto, o che vantaggio ha, se tieni una condotta integra?
4 Do you think he is punishing you for your piety and bringing you to justice for that?	4 È forse per la tua pietà che ti punisce e ti convoca in giudizio?
5 No, for your great wickedness, more likely, for your unlimited sins!	5 O non piuttosto per la tua grande malvagità e per le tue iniquità senza limite?
6 You have exacted unearned pledges from your brothers, stripped people naked of their clothes,	6 Senza motivo infatti hai angariato i tuoi fratelli e delle vesti hai spogliato gli ignudi.
7 failed to give water to the thirsty and refused bread to the hungry;	7 Non hai dato da bere all’assetato e all’affamato hai rifiutato il pane.
8 handed the land over to a strong man, for some favoured person to move in,	8 Ai prepotenti davi la terra e vi abitavano solo i tuoi favoriti.
9 sent widows away empty-handed and crushed the arms of orphans.	9 Le vedove rimandavi a mani vuote e spezzavi le braccia degli orfani.
10 No wonder, then, if snares are al around you, and sudden terrors make you afraid;	10 Ecco perché intorno a te ci sono lacci e un improvviso spavento ti sorprende,
11 if light has turned to darkness, so that you cannot see, and you have been submerged in the flood.	11 oppure l’oscurità ti impedisce di vedere e la piena delle acque ti sommerge.
12 Does not God live high in the heavens, does he not see the zenith of the stars?	12 Ma Dio non è nell’alto dei cieli? Guarda quanto è lontano il vertice delle stelle!
13 And because he is up there, you have said, 'What does God know? Can he judge through the darkcloud?	13 E tu dici: “Che cosa ne sa Dio? Come può giudicare attraverso l’oscurità delle nubi?
14 The clouds, to him, are an impenetrable veil, as he goes his way on the rim of the heavens.'	14 Le nubi gli fanno velo e non vede quando passeggia sulla volta dei cieli”.
15 And wil you stil fol ow the ancient trail trodden by the wicked,	15 Vuoi tu seguire il sentiero di un tempo, già battuto da persone perverse,
16 those who were borne off before their time, whose foundations were swamped by a flood,	16 che prematuramente furono portate via, quando un fiume si era riversato sulle loro fondamenta?
17 for having said to God, 'Go away! What can Shaddai do to us?'	17 Dicevano a Dio: “Allontànati da noi! Che cosa può fare a noi l’Onnipotente?”.
18 Yet he himself had filled their houses with good things, although excluded from the plans of thewicked!	18 Eppure è lui che ha riempito le loro case di beni, mentre il consiglio dei malvagi è lontano da lui!
19 At such a spectacle, the upright rejoice, and the innocent deride them:	19 I giusti vedranno e ne gioiranno e l’innocente riderà di loro:
20 'See how our enemies have been destroyed! See how their wealth has perished in the flames!'	20 “Finalmente sono annientati i loro averi e il fuoco ha divorato la loro opulenza!”.
21 Wel then! Make peace with him, be reconciled, and al your happiness will be restored to you.	21 Su, riconcìliati con lui e tornerai felice, e avrai nuovamente il tuo benessere.
22 Welcome the teaching from his lips, and keep his words close to your heart.	22 Accogli la legge dalla sua bocca e poni le sue parole nel tuo cuore.
23 If you return, humbled, to Shaddai and drive wickedness far from your tent,	23 Se ti rivolgerai all’Onnipotente, verrai ristabilito. Se allontanerai l’iniquità dalla tua tenda,
24 if you lay your gold down on the dust, Ophir down among the pebbles of the torrent,	24 se stimerai come polvere l’oro e come ciottoli dei fiumi l’oro di Ofir,
25 Shaddai wil be bars of gold to you and silver piled in heaps.	25 allora l’Onnipotente sarà il tuo oro, sarà per te come mucchi d’argento.
26 Then Shaddai will be al your delight, and you wil lift your face to God.	26 Allora sì, nell’Onnipotente ti delizierai e a Dio alzerai il tuo volto.
27 You wil pray, and he wil hear; and you wil be able to fulfil your vows.	27 Lo supplicherai ed egli ti esaudirà, e tu scioglierai i tuoi voti.
28 Whatever you undertake wil go wel , and light will shine on your path;	28 Quando deciderai una cosa, ti riuscirà e sul tuo cammino brillerà la luce,
29 for he casts down the pride of the arrogant, but he saves those of downcast eyes.	29 perché egli umilia l’alterigia del superbo, ma soccorre chi ha lo sguardo dimesso.
30 He rescues anyone who is innocent; have your hands clean, and you wil be saved.	30 Egli libera chi è innocente, e tu sarai liberato per la purezza delle tue mani».
