1 The whole world spoke the same language, with the same vocabulary.	1 Tutta la terra aveva una sola lingua colle stesse parole.
2 Now, as people moved eastwards they found a valley in the land of Shinar where they settled.	2 Or, partendosi dall'oriente, gli uomini trovarono una pianura nella terra di Sennaar, e vi abitarono.
3 They said to one another, 'Come, let us make bricks and bake them in the fire.' For stone they usedbricks, and for mortar they used bitumen.	3 E dissero l'uno all'altro: «Venite, facciamo dei mattoni e cociamoli al fuoco ». E si servirono di mattoni invece di pietre, e di bitume invece di cemento,
4 'Come,' they said, 'let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top reaching heaven. Let us makea name for ourselves, so that we do not get scattered all over the world.'	4 e dissero: «Venite, edifichiamoci una città e una torre la cui cima tocchi il cielo, e rendiamo famoso il nostro nome avanti di disperderci per tutta la terra ».
5 Now Yahweh came down to see the city and the tower that the people had built.	5 Ma il Signore, sceso a veder la città e la torre che stavan fabbricando i figli d'Adamo,
6 'So they are al a single people with a single language!' said Yahweh. 'This is only the start of theirundertakings! Now nothing they plan to do wil be beyond them.	6 disse: « Ecco, sono un sol popolo, han tutti la medesima lingua, e, avendo cominciato a far quest'opera, non desisteranno dai loro disegni, finché non li abbiano eseguiti.
7 Come, let us go down and confuse their language there, so that they cannot understand one another.'	7 Venite adunque, e scendiamo a confondere il loro linguaggio in modo che non s'intendano più ».
8 Yahweh scattered them thence all over the world, and they stopped building the city.	8 E così il Signore li disperse da quel luogo su tutta la terra, e cessarono di fabbricare la città,
9 That is why it was cal ed Babel, since there Yahweh confused the language of the whole world, andfrom there Yahweh scattered them al over the world.	9 alla quale fu dato appunto il nome di Babele, perchè ivi fu confuso il linguaggio di tutta la terra, e di là il Signore li disperse per tutta quanta la terra.
10 These are Shem's descendants: When Shem was a hundred years old he fathered Arpachshad, twoyears after the flood.	10 Questa è la posterità di Sem: Sem aveva cento anni, quando generò Arfaxad, due anni dopo il diluvio.
11 After the birth of Arpachshad, Shem lived five hundred years and fathered sons and daughters.	11 Sem, dopo aver generato Arfaxad, visse cinquecento anni, e generò figlioli e figliole.

16 When Eber was thirty-four years old he fathered Peleg.	16 E visse Eber trentaquattro anni, e generò Faleg.
17 After the birth of Peleg, Eber lived four hundred and thirty years and fathered sons and daughters.	17 Ed Eber, dopo aver generato Faleg, visse quattrocentotrenta anni, e generò figli e figlie.
18 When Peleg was thirty years old he fathered Reu.	18 E visse Faleg trenta anni e generò Reu.
19 After the birth of Reu, Peleg lived two hundred and nine years and fathered sons and daughters.	19 E Faleg, dopo aver generato Reu, visse duecentonove anni, e generò figli e figlie.
20 When Reu was thirty-two years old he fathered Serug.	20 Reu visse trentadue anni, e generò Sarug.
21 After the birth of Serug, Reu lived two hundred and seven years and fathered sons and daughters.	21 E, dopo aver generato Sarug, Reu visse duecentosette anni, e generò figli e figlie,
22 When Serug was thirty years old he fathered Nahor.	22 Sarug visse trentanni, e generò Nacor.
23 After the birth of Nahor, Serug lived two hundred years and fathered sons and daughters.	23 E Sarug, dopo aver generato Nacor, visse duecento anni, e generò figli e figlie.
24 When Nahor was twenty-nine years old he fathered Terah.	24 E visse Nacor ventinove anni, e generò Tare.
25 After the birth of Terah, Nahor lived a hundred and nineteen years and fathered sons and daughters.	25 E visse Nacor, dopo aver generato Tare, centodiciannove anni, e generò figli e figlie.
26 When Terah was seventy years old he fathered Abram, Nahor and Haran.	26 E visse Tare settanta anni e generò Abramo, Nacor ed Aran.
27 These are Terah's descendants: Terah fathered Abram, Nahor and Haran. Haran fathered Lot.	27 Ecco la posterità di Tare: Tare generò Abramo, Nacor ed Aran. Aran poi generò Lot,

30 Sarai was barren, having no child.	30 Ma Sarai era sterile e non aveva figli.
31 Terah took his son Abram, his grandson Lot son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law the wife ofAbram, and made them leave Ur of the Chaldaeans to go to the land of Canaan. But on arrival in Haran theysettled there.	31 Pertanto Tare prese Abramo suo figliolo, e Lot, figlio del suo figlio, cioè di Aran, e Sarai sua nuora, moglie d'Abramo suo figliolo, e li condusse via da Ur dei Caldei, per andare nella terra di Canaan; ma giunti a Haran, vi abitarono.
32 Terah's life lasted two hundred and five years; then he died at Haran.	32 E Tare visse duecentocinque anni e morì in Haran.
