1 Now a man was ill, Lazarus from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha.	1 Había caído enfermo un cierto Lázaro, de Betania, la aldea de María y de Marta, su hermana.
2 Mary was the one who had anointed the Lord with perfumed oil and dried his feet with her hair; it was her brother Lazarus who was ill.	2 María era la que ungió al Señor con perfume y le enjugó los pies con su cabellera; el enfermo era su hermano Lázaro.
3 So the sisters sent word to him, saying, "Master, the one you love is ill."	3 Las hermanas le mandaron recado a Jesús diciendo: «Señor, el que tú amas está enfermo».
4 When Jesus heard this he said, "This illness is not to end in death, but is for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it."	4 Jesús, al oírlo, dijo: «Esta enfermedad no es para la muerte, sino que servirá para la gloria de Dios, para que el Hijo de Dios sea glorificado por ella».
5 Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.	5 Jesús amaba a Marta, a su hermana y a Lázaro.
6 So when he heard that he was ill, he remained for two days in the place where he was.	6 Cuando se enteró de que estaba enfermo se quedó todavía dos días donde estaba.
7 Then after this he said to his disciples, "Let us go back to Judea."	7 Solo entonces dijo a sus discípulos: «Vamos otra vez a Judea».
8 The disciples said to him, "Rabbi, the Jews were just trying to stone you, and you want to go back there?"	8 Los discípulos le replicaron: «Maestro, hace poco intentaban apedrearte los judíos, ¿y vas a volver de nuevo allí?».
9 Jesus answered, "Are there not twelve hours in a day? If one walks during the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world.	9 Jesús contestó: «¿No tiene el día doce horas? Si uno camina de día no tropieza, porque ve la luz de este mundo;
10 But if one walks at night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him."	10 pero si camina de noche tropieza, porque la luz no está en él».
11 He said this, and then told them, "Our friend Lazarus is asleep, but I am going to awaken him."	11 Dicho esto, añadió: «Lázaro, nuestro amigo, está dormido: voy a despertarlo».
12 So the disciples said to him, "Master, if he is asleep, he will be saved."	12 Entonces le dijeron sus discípulos: «Señor, si duerme, se salvará».
13 But Jesus was talking about his death, while they thought that he meant ordinary sleep.	13 Jesús se refería a su muerte; en cambio, ellos creyeron que hablaba del sueño natural.
14 So then Jesus said to them clearly, "Lazarus has died.	14 Entonces Jesús les replicó claramente: «Lázaro ha muerto,
15 And I am glad for you that I was not there, that you may believe. Let us go to him."	15 y me alegro por vosotros de que no hayamos estado allí, para que creáis. Y ahora vamos a su encuentro».
16 So Thomas, called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, "Let us also go to die with him."	16 Entonces Tomás, apodado el Mellizo, dijo a los demás discípulos: «Vamos también nosotros y muramos con él».
17 When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days.	17 Cuando Jesús llegó, Lázaro llevaba ya cuatro días enterrado.
18 Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, only about two miles away.	18 Betania distaba poco de Jerusalén: unos quince estadios;
19 And many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them about their brother.	19 y muchos judíos habían ido a ver a Marta y a María para darles el pésame por su hermano.
20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him; but Mary sat at home.	20 Cuando Marta se enteró de que llegaba Jesús, salió a su encuentro, mientras María se quedó en casa.
21 Martha said to Jesus, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.	21 Y dijo Marta a Jesús: «Señor, si hubieras estado aquí no habría muerto mi hermano.
22 (But) even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you."	22 Pero aún ahora sé que todo lo que pidas a Dios, Dios te lo concederá».
23 Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise."	23 Jesús le dijo: «Tu hermano resucitará».
24 Martha said to him, "I know he will rise, in the resurrection on the last day."	24 Marta respondió: «Sé que resucitará en la resurrección en el último día».
25 Jesus told her, "I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live,	25 Jesús le dijo: «Yo soy la resurrección y la vida: el que cree en mí, aunque haya muerto, vivirá;
26 and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?"	26 y el que está vivo y cree en mí, no morirá para siempre. ¿Crees esto?».
27 She said to him, "Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who is coming into the world."	27 Ella le contestó: «Sí, Señor: yo creo que tú eres el Cristo, el Hijo de Dios, el que tenía que venir al mundo».
28 When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary secretly, saying, "The teacher is here and is asking for you."	28 Y dicho esto, fue a llamar a su hermana María, diciéndole en voz baja: «El Maestro está ahí y te llama».
29 As soon as she heard this, she rose quickly and went to him.	29 Apenas lo oyó, se levantó y salió adonde estaba él:
30 For Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still where Martha had met him.	30 porque Jesús no había entrado todavía en la aldea, sino que estaba aún donde Marta lo había encontrado.
31 So when the Jews who were with her in the house comforting her saw Mary get up quickly and go out, they followed her, presuming that she was going to the tomb to weep there.	31 Los judíos que estaban con ella en casa consolándola, al ver que María se levantaba y salía deprisa, la siguieron, pensando que iba al sepulcro a llorar allí.
32 When Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said to him, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died."	32 Cuando llegó María adonde estaba Jesús, al verlo se echó a sus pies diciéndole: «Señor, si hubieras estado aquí no habría muerto mi hermano».
33 When Jesus saw her weeping and the Jews who had come with her weeping, he became perturbed and deeply troubled,	33 Jesús, viéndola llorar a ella y viendo llorar a los judíos que la acompañaban, se conmovió en su espíritu, se estremeció
34 and said, "Where have you laid him?" They said to him, "Sir, come and see."	34 y preguntó: «¿Dónde lo habéis enterrado?». Le contestaron: «Señor, ven a verlo».
35 And Jesus wept.	35 Jesús se echó a llorar.
36 So the Jews said, "See how he loved him."	36 Los judíos comentaban: «¡Cómo lo quería!».
37 But some of them said, "Could not the one who opened the eyes of the blind man have done something so that this man would not have died?"	37 Pero algunos dijeron: «Y uno que le ha abierto los ojos a un ciego, ¿no podía haber impedido que este muriera?».
38 So Jesus, perturbed again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay across it.	38 Jesús, conmovido de nuevo en su interior, llegó a la tumba. Era una cavidad cubierta con una losa.
39 Jesus said, "Take away the stone." Martha, the dead man's sister, said to him, "Lord, by now there will be a stench; he has been dead for four days."	39 Dijo Jesús: «Quitad la losa». Marta, la hermana del muerto, le dijo: «Señor, ya huele mal porque lleva cuatro días».
40 Jesus said to her, "Did I not tell you that if you believe you will see the glory of God?"	40 Jesús le replicó: «¿No te he dicho que si crees verás la gloria de Dios?».
41 So they took away the stone. And Jesus raised his eyes and said, "Father, I thank you for hearing me.	41 Entonces quitaron la losa. Jesús, levantando los ojos a lo alto, dijo: «Padre, te doy gracias porque me has escuchado;
42 I know that you always hear me; but because of the crowd here I have said this, that they may believe that you sent me."	42 yo sé que tú me escuchas siempre; pero lo digo por la gente que me rodea, para que crean que tú me has enviado».
43 And when he had said this, he cried out in a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!"	43 Y dicho esto, gritó con voz potente: «Lázaro, sal afuera».
44 The dead man came out, tied hand and foot with burial bands, and his face was wrapped in a cloth. So Jesus said to them, "Untie him and let him go."	44 El muerto salió, los pies y las manos atados con vendas, y la cara envuelta en un sudario. Jesús les dijo: «Desatadlo y dejadlo andar».
45 Now many of the Jews who had come to Mary and seen what he had done began to believe in him.	45 Y muchos judíos que habían venido a casa de María, al ver lo que había hecho Jesús, creyeron en él.
46 But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.	46 Pero algunos acudieron a los fariseos y les contaron lo que había hecho Jesús.
47 So the chief priests and the Pharisees convened the Sanhedrin and said, "What are we going to do? This man is performing many signs.	47 Los sumos sacerdotes y los fariseos convocaron el Sanedrín y dijeron: «¿Qué hacemos? Este hombre hace muchos signos.
48 If we leave him alone, all will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our land and our nation."	48 Si lo dejamos seguir, todos creerán en él, y vendrán los romanos y nos destruirán el lugar santo y la nación».
49 But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, "You know nothing,	49 Uno de ellos, Caifás, que era sumo sacerdote aquel año, les dijo: «Vosotros no entendéis ni palabra;
50 nor do you consider that it is better for you that one man should die instead of the people, so that the whole nation may not perish."	50 no comprendéis que os conviene que uno muera por el pueblo, y que no perezca la nación entera».
51 He did not say this on his own, but since he was high priest for that year, he prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation,	51 Esto no lo dijo por propio impulso, sino que, por ser sumo sacerdote aquel año, habló proféticamente, anunciando que Jesús iba a morir por la nación;
52 and not only for the nation, but also to gather into one the dispersed children of God.	52 y no solo por la nación, sino también para reunir a los hijos de Dios dispersos.
53 So from that day on they planned to kill him.	53 Y aquel día decidieron darle muerte.
54 So Jesus no longer walked about in public among the Jews, but he left for the region near the desert, to a town called Ephraim, and there he remained with his disciples.	54 Por eso Jesús ya no andaba públicamente entre los judíos, sino que se retiró a la región vecina al desierto, a una ciudad llamada Efraín, y pasaba allí el tiempo con los discípulos.
55 Now the Passover of the Jews was near, and many went up from the country to Jerusalem before Passover to purify themselves.	55 Se acercaba la Pascua de los judíos, y muchos de aquella región subían a Jerusalén, antes de la Pascua, para purificarse.
56 They looked for Jesus and said to one another as they were in the temple area, "What do you think? That he will not come to the feast?"	56 Buscaban a Jesús y, estando en el templo, se preguntaban: «¿Qué os parece? ¿Vendrá a la fiesta?».
57 For the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where he was, he should inform them, so that they might arrest him.	57 Los sumos sacerdotes y fariseos habían mandado que el que se enterase de dónde estaba les avisara para prenderlo.
