NEW AMERICAN BIBLENOVA VULGATA
These are the words which Moses spoke to all Israel beyond the Jordan ( in the desert, in the Arabah, opposite Suph, between Paran and Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth and Dizahab;1 Haec sunt verba, quae locutus est Moyses ad omnem Israel trans Iordanem in solitudine, in Araba contra Suph, inter Pharan et Thophel et Laban et Aseroth et Dizahab.
it is a journey of eleven days from Horeb to Kadesh-barnea by way of the highlands of Seir).2 Undecim dies de Horeb per viam montis Seir usque Cadesbarne.
In the fortieth year, on the first day of the eleventh month, Moses spoke to the Israelites all the commands that the LORD had given him in their regard.3 Quadragesimo anno, undecimo mense, prima die mensis locutus est Moyses ad filios Israel omnia, quae praeceperat illi Dominus ut diceret eis.
After he had defeated Sihon, king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon, and Og, king of Bashan, who lived in Ashtaroth and in Edrei,4 Postquam percussit Sehon regem Amorraeorum, qui habitavit in Hesebon, et Og regem Basan, qui mansit in Astharoth et in Edrai,
Moses began to explain the law in the land of Moab beyond the Jordan, as follows:5 trans Iordanem in terra Moab coepitque Moyses explanare legem hanc et dicere:
"The LORD, our God, said to us at Horeb, 'You have stayed long enough at this mountain.6 “ Dominus Deus noster locutus est ad nos in Horeb dicens: “Sufficit vobis quod in hoc monte mansistis;
Leave here and go to the hill country of the Amorites and to all the surrounding regions, the land of the Canaanites in the Arabah, the mountains, the foothills, the Negeb and the seacoast; to Lebanon, and as far as the Great River (the Euphrates).7 convertimini et proficiscimini et venite ad montem Amorraeorum et ad omnes vicinos eius: in Araba atque montanis et in Sephela et in Nageb et iuxta litus maris, in terram Chananaeorum et in Libanum usque ad flumen magnum Euphraten.
I have given that land over to you. Go now and occupy the land I swore to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, I would give to them and to their descendants.'8 En, inquit, tradidi vobis terram: ingredimini et possidete eam, super qua iuravit Dominus patribus vestris, Abraham, Isaac et Iacob, ut daret illam eis et semini eorum post eos”.
"At that time I said to you, 'Alone, I am unable to carry you.9 Dixique vobis illo in tempore: Non possum solus sustinere vos;
The LORD, your God, has so multiplied you that you are now as numerous as the stars in the sky.10 Dominus Deus vester multiplicavit vos, et estis hodie sicut stellae caeli plurimi.
May the LORD, the God of your fathers, increase you a thousand times over, and bless you as he promised!11 Dominus, Deus patrum vestrorum, addat ad hunc numerum multa milia et benedicat vobis, sicut locutus est vobis.
But how can I alone bear the crushing burden that you are, along with your bickering?12 Non valeo solus vestra negotia sustinere et pondus ac iurgia;
Choose wise, intelligent and experienced men from each of your tribes, that I may appoint them as your leaders.'13 date vobis viros sapientes et gnaros, et quorum conversatio sit probata in tribubus vestris, ut ponam eos vobis principes.
You answered me, 'We agree to do as you have proposed.'14 Tunc respondistis mihi: “Bona res est, quam vis facere”.
So I took outstanding men of your tribes, wise and experienced, and made them your leaders as officials over thousands, over hundreds, over fifties and over tens, and other tribal officers.15 Tulique principes de tribubus vestris viros sapientes et probatos et constitui eos principes super vos: tribunos et centuriones et quinquagenarios ac decanos et praefectos operum pro tribubus vestris.
I charged your judges at that time, 'Listen to complaints among your kinsmen, and administer true justice to both parties even if one of them is an alien.16 Praecepique iudicibus vestris in tempore illo: Audite causam fratrum vestrorum et, quod iustum est, iudicate, sive civis sit ille sive peregrinus.
In rendering judgment, do not consider who a person is; give ear to the lowly and to the great alike, fearing no man, for judgment is God's. Refer to me any case that is too hard for you and I will hear it.'17 Non accipietis personam in iudicio; ita parvum audietis ut magnum nec timebitis cuiusquam personam, quia Dei iudicium est. Quod si difficile vobis aliquid visum fuerit, referte ad me, et ego audiam.
Thereupon I gave you all the commands you were to fulfill.18 Praecepique vobis in tempore illo omnia, quae facere deberetis.
"Then, in obedience to the command of the LORD, our God, we set out from Horeb and journeyed through the whole desert, vast and fearful as you have seen, in the direction of the hill country of the Amorites. We had reached Kadesh-barnea19 Profecti autem de Horeb transivimus per totam illam eremum maximam et terribilem, quam vidistis, per viam montis Amorraei, sicut praeceperat Dominus Deus noster nobis. Cumque venissemus in Cadesbarne,
when I said to you, 'You have come to the hill country of the Amorites, which the LORD, our God, is giving us.20 dixi vobis: Venistis ad montem Amorraei, quem Dominus Deus noster daturus est nobis.
The LORD, your God, has given this land over to you. Go up and occupy it, as the LORD, the God of your fathers, commands you. Do not fear or lose heart.'21 Vide terram, quam Dominus Deus tuus dat tibi: ascende et posside eam, sicut locutus est tibi Dominus, Deus patrum tuorum; noli metuere nec quidquam paveas.
Then all of you came up to me and said, 'Let us send men ahead to reconnoiter the land for us and report to us on the road we must follow and the cities we must take.'22 Et accessistis ad me vos omnes atque dixistis: “Mittamus viros ante nos, qui considerent terram et renuntient de itinere, per quod debeamus ascendere, et de civitatibus, ad quas pergere”.
Agreeing with the proposal, I chose twelve men from your number, one from each tribe.23 Cumque mihi sermo placuisset, misi ex vobis duodecim viros singulos de tribubus suis.
They set out into the hill country as far as the Wadi Eshcol, and explored it.24 Qui cum perrexissent et ascendissent in montana, venerunt usque ad Nehelescol et, considerata terra,
Then, taking along some of the fruit of the land, they brought it down to us and reported, 'The land which the LORD, our God, gives us is good.'25 sumentes de fructibus eius attulerunt ad nos atque dixerunt: “Bona est terra, quam Dominus Deus noster daturus est nobis”.
"But you refused to go up, and after defying the command of the LORD, your God,26 Et noluistis ascendere, sed increduli ad sermonem Domini Dei vestri
you set to murmuring in your tents, 'Out of hatred for us the LORD has brought us up out of the land of Egypt, to deliver us into the hands of the Amorites and destroy us.27 murmurastis in tabernaculis vestris atque dixistis: “Odit nos Dominus et idcirco eduxit nos de terra Aegypti, ut traderet nos in manu Amorraei atque deleret.
What shall we meet with up there? Our kinsmen have made us fainthearted by reporting that the people are stronger and taller than we, and their cities are large and fortified to the sky; besides, they saw the Anakim there.'28 Quo ascendemus? Fratres nostri terruerunt cor nostrum dicentes: Maxima multitudo est et nobis in statura procerior; urbes magnae et ad caelum usque munitae; etiam filios Enacim vidimus ibi”.
"But I said to you, 'Have no dread or fear of them.29 Et dixi vobis: Nolite metuere nec timeatis eos.
The LORD, your God, who goes before you, will himself fight for you, just as he took your part before your very eyes in Egypt,30 Dominus Deus, qui ductor est vester, ipse pro vobis pugnabit, sicut fecit in Aegypto, vobis videntibus.
as well as in the desert, where you saw how the LORD, your God, carried you, as a man carries his child, all along your journey until you arrived at this place.'31 Et in solitudine — ipse vidisti — portavit te Dominus Deus tuus, ut solet homo gestare parvulum filium suum, in omni via, per quam ambulastis, donec veniretis ad locum istum.
Despite this, you would not trust the LORD, your God,32 Et nec sic quidem credidistis Domino Deo vestro,
who journeys before you to find you a resting place--by day in the cloud, and by night in the fire, to show the way you must go.33 qui praecessit vos in via, et metatus est locum, in quo tentoria figere deberetis, nocte ostendens vobis iter per ignem et die per columnam nubis.
When the LORD heard your words, he was angry;34 Cumque audisset Dominus vocem sermonum vestrorum, iratus iuravit et ait:
and he swore, 'Not one man of this evil generation shall look upon the good land I swore to give to your fathers,35 “Non videbit quispiam de viris generationis huius pessimae terram bonam, quam sub iuramento pollicitus sum patribus vestris,
except Caleb, son of Jephunneh; he shall see it. For to him and to his sons I will give the land he trod upon, because he has followed the LORD unreservedly.'36 praeter Chaleb filium Iephonne: ipse enim videbit eam, et ipsi dabo terram, quam calcavit, et filiis eius, quia adimplevit ut sequeretur Dominum”.
"The LORD was angered against me also on your account, and said, 'Not even you shall enter there,37 Mihi quoque iratus Dominus propter vos dixit: “Nec tu ingredieris illuc;
but your aide Joshua, son of Nun, shall enter. Encourage him, for he is to give Israel its heritage.38 sed Iosue filius Nun minister tuus ipse intrabit illuc. Hunc robora, et ipse terram sorte dividat Israeli.
Your little ones, who you said would become booty, and your children, who as yet do not know good from bad--they shall enter; to them I will give it, and they shall occupy it.39 Parvuli vestri, de quibus dixistis quod captivi ducerentur, et filii, qui hodie boni ac mali ignorant distantiam, ipsi ingredientur; et ipsis dabo terram, et possidebunt eam.
But as for yourselves: turn about and proceed into the desert on the Red Sea road.'40 Vos autem revertimini et abite in solitudinem per viam maris Rubri”.
"In reply you said to me, 'We have sinned against the LORD. We will go up ourselves and fight, just as the LORD, our God, commanded us.' And each of you girded on his weapons, making light of going up into the hill country.41 Et respondistis mihi: “Peccavimus Domino; nos ascendemus atque pugnabimus, sicut praecepit nobis Dominus Deus noster”. Cumque instructi armis pergeretis in montem,
But the LORD said to me, 'Warn them: Do not go up and fight, lest you be beaten down before your enemies, for I will not be in your midst.'42 ait mihi Dominus: “Dic ad eos: Nolite ascendere neque pugnetis, non enim sum vobiscum, ne cadatis coram inimicis vestris”.
I gave you this warning but you would not listen. In defiance of the LORD'S command you arrogantly marched off into the hill country.43 Locutus sum, et non audistis, sed adversantes imperio Domini et tumentes superbia ascendistis in montem.
Then the Amorites living there came out against you and, like bees, chased you, cutting you down in Seir as far as Hormah.44 Itaque egressus Amorraeus, qui habitat in monte illo, obviam vobis, persecutus est vos, sicut solent apes persequi, et cecidit vos de Seir usque Horma.
On your return you wept before the LORD, but he did not listen to your cry or give ear to you.45 Cumque reversi ploraretis coram Domino, non audivit vos nec voci vestrae voluit acquiescere.
That is why you had to stay as long as you did at Kadesh.46 Sedistis ergo in Cades multo illo tempore, dum ibi mansistis.
