NEW AMERICAN BIBLEBIBLIA
The tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to listen to him,1 Todos los publicanos y los pecadores se acercaban a él para oírle,
but the Pharisees and scribes began to complain, saying, "This man welcomes sinners and eats with them."2 y los fariseos y los escribas murmuraban, diciendo: «Este acoge a los pecadores y come con ellos».
So to them he addressed this parable.3 Entonces les dijo esta parábola.
"What man among you having a hundred sheep and losing one of them would not leave the ninety-nine in the desert and go after the lost one until he finds it?4 «¿Quién de vosotros que tiene cien ovejas, si pierde una de ellas, no deja las 99 en el desierto, y va a buscar la que se perdió hasta que la encuentra?
And when he does find it, he sets it on his shoulders with great joy5 Y cuando la encuentra, la pone contento sobre sus hombros;
and, upon his arrival home, he calls together his friends and neighbors and says to them, 'Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep.'6 y llegando a casa, convoca a los amigos y vecinos, y les dice: “Alegraos conmigo, porque he hallado la oveja que se me había perdido.”
I tell you, in just the same way there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who have no need of repentance.7 Os digo que, de igual modo, habrá más alegría en el cielo por un solo pecador que se convierta que por 99 justos que no tengan necesidad de conversión.
"Or what woman having ten coins and losing one would not light a lamp and sweep the house, searching carefully until she finds it?8 «O, ¿qué mujer que tiene diez dracmas, si pierde una, no enciende una lámpara y barre la casa y busca cuidadosamente hasta que la encuentra?
And when she does find it, she calls together her friends and neighbors and says to them, 'Rejoice with me because I have found the coin that I lost.'9 Y cuando la encuentra, convoca a las amigas y vecinas, y dice: “Alegraos conmigo, porque he hallado la dracma que había perdido.”
In just the same way, I tell you, there will be rejoicing among the angels of God over one sinner who repents."10 Del mismo modo, os digo, se produce alegría ante los ángeles de Dios por un solo pecador que se convierta».
Then he said, "A man had two sons,11 Dijo: «Un hombre tenía dos hijos;
and the younger son said to his father, 'Father, give me the share of your estate that should come to me.' So the father divided the property between them.12 y el menor de ellos dijo al padre: “Padre, dame la parte de la hacienda que me corresponde.” Y él les repartió la hacienda.
After a few days, the younger son collected all his belongings and set off to a distant country where he squandered his inheritance on a life of dissipation.13 Pocos días después el hijo menor lo reunió todo y se marchó a un país lejano donde malgastó su hacienda viviendo como un libertino.
When he had freely spent everything, a severe famine struck that country, and he found himself in dire need.14 «Cuando hubo gastado todo, sobrevino un hambre extrema en aquel país, y comenzó a pasar necesidad.
So he hired himself out to one of the local citizens who sent him to his farm to tend the swine.15 Entonces, fue y se ajustó con uno de los ciudadanos de aquel país, que le envió a sus fincas a apacentar puercos.
And he longed to eat his fill of the pods on which the swine fed, but nobody gave him any.16 Y deseaba llenar su vientre con las algarrobas que comían los puercos, pero nadie se las daba.
Coming to his senses he thought, 'How many of my father's hired workers have more than enough food to eat, but here am I, dying from hunger.17 Y entrando en sí mismo, dijo: “¡Cuántos jornaleros de mi padre tienen pan en abundancia, mientras que yo aquí me muero de hambre!
I shall get up and go to my father and I shall say to him, "Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you.18 Me levantaré, iré a mi padre y le diré: Padre, pequé contra el cielo y ante ti.
I no longer deserve to be called your son; treat me as you would treat one of your hired workers."'19 Ya no merezco ser llamado hijo tuyo, trátame como a uno de tus jornaleros.”
So he got up and went back to his father. While he was still a long way off, his father caught sight of him, and was filled with compassion. He ran to his son, embraced him and kissed him.20 Y, levantándose, partió hacia su padre. «Estando él todavía lejos, le vió su padre y, conmovido, corrió, se echó a su cuello y le besó efusivamente.
His son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you; I no longer deserve to be called your son.'21 El hijo le dijo: “Padre, pequé contra el cielo y ante ti; ya no merezco ser llamado hijo tuyo.”
But his father ordered his servants, 'Quickly bring the finest robe and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet.22 Pero el padre dijo a sus siervos: “Traed aprisa el mejor vestido y vestidle, ponedle un anillo en su mano y unas sandalias en los pies.
Take the fattened calf and slaughter it. Then let us celebrate with a feast,23 Traed el novillo cebado, matadlo, y comamos y celebremos una fiesta,
because this son of mine was dead, and has come to life again; he was lost, and has been found.' Then the celebration began.24 porque este hijo mío estaba muerto y ha vuelto a la vida; estaba perdido y ha sido hallado.” Y comenzaron la fiesta.
Now the older son had been out in the field and, on his way back, as he neared the house, he heard the sound of music and dancing.25 «Su hijo mayor estaba en el campo y, al volver, cuando se acercó a la casa, oyó la música y las danzas;
He called one of the servants and asked what this might mean.26 y llamando a uno de los criados, le preguntó qué era aquello.
The servant said to him, 'Your brother has returned and your father has slaughtered the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.'27 El le dijo: “Ha vuelto tu hermano y tu padre ha matado el novillo cebado, porque le ha recobrado sano.”
He became angry, and when he refused to enter the house, his father came out and pleaded with him.28 El se irritó y no quería entrar. Salió su padre, y le suplicaba.
He said to his father in reply, 'Look, all these years I served you and not once did I disobey your orders; yet you never gave me even a young goat to feast on with my friends.29 Pero él replicó a su padre: “Hace tantos años que te sirvo, y jamás dejé de cumplir una orden tuya, pero nunca me has dado un cabrito para tener una fiesta con mis amigos;
But when your son returns who swallowed up your property with prostitutes, for him you slaughter the fattened calf.'30 y ¡ahora que ha venido ese hijo tuyo, que ha devorado tu hacienda con prostitutas, has matado para él el novillo cebado!”
He said to him, 'My son, you are here with me always; everything I have is yours.31 «Pero él le dijo: “Hijo, tú siempre estás conmigo, y todo lo mío es tuyo;
But now we must celebrate and rejoice, because your brother was dead and has come to life again; he was lost and has been found.'"32 pero convenía celebrar una fiesta y alegrarse, porque este hermano tuyo estaba muerto, y ha vuelto a la vida; estaba perdido, y ha sido hallado.”»
