As soon as morning came, the chief priests with the elders and the scribes, that is, the whole Sanhedrin, held a council. They bound Jesus, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate.1 Logo pela manhã, tiveram conselho os príncipes dos sacerdotes com os anciães, os escribas e com todo o Sinédrio. Manietando Jesus, o levaram e entregaram a Pilatos.
Pilate questioned him, "Are you the king of the Jews?" He said to him in reply, "You say so."2 Pilatos perguntou-lhe: "Tu és o Rei dos Judeus?" Ele respondeu-lhes: "Tu o dizes."
The chief priests accused him of many things.3 Os príncipes dos sacerdotes acusavam-no de muitas coisas.
Again Pilate questioned him, "Have you no answer? See how many things they accuse you of."4 Pilatos interrogou-o novamente: "Não respondes coisa alguma? Vê de quantas coisas te acusam."
Jesus gave him no further answer, so that Pilate was amazed.5 Mas Jesus não respondeu mais nada, de sorte que Pilatos estava admirado.
Now on the occasion of the feast he used to release to them one prisoner whom they requested.6 Ora ele costumava no dia da festa (de Páscoa) soltar-lhes um dos presos, qualquer que eles pedissem.
A man called Barabbas was then in prison along with the rebels who had committed murder in a rebellion.7 Havia um chamado Barrabás, que estava preso com outros sediciosos, o qual, num motim, tinha cometido um homicídio.
The crowd came forward and began to ask him to do for them as he was accustomed.8 Juntando-se o povo, começou a pedir o (indulto) que sempre lhes concedia.
Pilate answered, "Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?"9 Pilatos respondeu-lhes: "Quereis que vos solte o Rei dos Judeus?"
For he knew that it was out of envy that the chief priests had handed him over.10 Porque sabia que os príncipes dos sacerdotes o tinham entregado por inveja.
But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release Barabbas for them instead.11 Porém, os príncipes dos sacerdotes, incitaram o povo a que pedisse antes a liberdade de Barrabás.
Pilate again said to them in reply, "Then what (do you want) me to do with (the man you call) the king of the Jews?"12 Pilatos, falando outra vez, disse-lhes: "Que quereis pois que eu faça ao Rei dos Judeus?"
They shouted again, "Crucify him."13 Eles tornaram a gritar: "Crucifica-o!"
Pilate said to them, "Why? What evil has he done?" They only shouted the louder, "Crucify him."14 Pilatos, porém, dizia-lhes: "Que mal fez ele?" Mas eles cada vez gritavam mais: "Crucifica-o!"
So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released Barabbas to them and, after he had Jesus scourged, handed him over to be crucified.15 Então Pilatos, querendo satisfazer o povo, soltou-lhes Barrabás. Depois de fazer açoutar Jesus, entregou-o para ser crucificado.
The soldiers led him away inside the palace, that is, the praetorium, and assembled the whole cohort.16 Os soldados conduziram-no ao interior do átrio, isto é, ao Pretório, e ali juntaram toda a coorte.
They clothed him in purple and, weaving a crown of thorns, placed it on him.17 Revestiram-no de púrpura e cingiram-lhe a cabeça com uma coroa entretecida de espinhos.
They began to salute him with, "Hail, King of the Jews!"18 E começaram a saudá-lo: "Salve, Rei dos Judeus!"
and kept striking his head with a reed and spitting upon him. They knelt before him in homage.19 E davam-lhe na cabeça com uma cana, cuspiam-lhe no rosto, e, pondo-se de joelhos, faziam-lhe reverências.
And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple cloak, dressed him in his own clothes, and led him out to crucify him.20 Depois de o terem escarnecido, despojaram-no da púrpura, vestiram-lhe os seus vestidos, e levaram-no para o crucificar.
They pressed into service a passer-by, Simon, a Cyrenian, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross.21 Obrigarem um certo homem que a a passar, Simão de Cirene, que vinha do campo, pai de Alexandre e de Rufo, a levar a cruz.
They brought him to the place of Golgotha (which is translated Place of the Skull).22 Conduziram-no ao lugar do Gólgota, que quer dizer lugar do Crânio.
They gave him wine drugged with myrrh, but he did not take it.23 Davam-lhe a beber vinho misturado com mirra, mas ele não o tomou.
Then they crucified him and divided his garments by casting lots for them to see what each should take.24 Tendo-o crucificado, dividiram os seus vestidos, lançando sortes sobre eles, para ver a parte que cada um levaria.
It was nine o'clock in the morning when they crucified him.25 Era a hora tércia quando o crucificaram.
The inscription of the charge against him read, "The King of the Jews."26 A causa da sua condenação estava escrita nesta inscrição: O REI DOS JUDEUS.
With him they crucified two revolutionaries, one on his right and one on his left.27 Com ele crucificaram dois ladrões, um à sua direita, e outro à esquerda.
)28 Cumpriu-se a Escritura, que diz: Foi contado entre os maus (Is. 53, 12).
Those passing by reviled him, shaking their heads and saying, "Aha! You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days,29 Os que iam passando blasfemavam, abanando as suas cabeças, e dizendo: "Ah! tu, que destróis o templo de Deus, e o reedificas em três dias,
save yourself by coming down from the cross."30 salva-te a ti mesmo, descendo da cruz."
Likewise the chief priests, with the scribes, mocked him among themselves and said, "He saved others; he cannot save himself.31 Do mesmo modo, escarnecendo-o também os príncipes dos sacerdotes e os escribas, diziam entre si: "Salvou os outros, e não se pode salvar a si mesmo.
Let the Messiah, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross that we may see and believe." Those who were crucified with him also kept abusing him.32 O Cristo, o Rei de Israel desça agora da cruz, para que vejamos e acreditemos." Também os que tinham sido crucificados com ele o insultavam.
At noon darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.33 Chegada a hora sexta, cobriu-se toda a terra de trevas até à hora nona.
And at three o'clock Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?" which is translated, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"34 E, à hora nona, exclamou Jesus em alta voz: "Eloí, Eloí, lamma sabachtani?" que quer dizer: "Deus meu. Deus meu, porque me desamparaste?"
Some of the bystanders who heard it said, "Look, he is calling Elijah."35 Ouvindo isto, alguns dos circunstantes diziam: "Eis que chama por Elias."
One of them ran, soaked a sponge with wine, put it on a reed, and gave it to him to drink, saying, "Wait, let us see if Elijah comes to take him down."36 Correndo um, e ensopando uma esponja em vinagre, e atando-a numa cana, dava-lhe de beber, dizendo: "Deixai, vejamos se Elias vem tirá-lo."
Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his last.37 Mas Jesus, dando um grande brado, expirou.
The veil of the sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom.38 O véu do templo rasgou-se em duas partes, de alto a baixo.
When the centurion who stood facing him saw how he breathed his last he said, "Truly this man was the Son of God!"39 O centurião, que estava defronte, vendo que Jesus expirava dando este brado, disse: "Verdadeiramente este homem era Filho de Deus."
There were also women looking on from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of the younger James and of Joses, and Salome.40 Encontravam-se também ali algumas mulheres vindo de longe, entre as quais estava Maria Madalena, Maria, mãe de Tiago menor e de José, e Salomé,
These women had followed him when he was in Galilee and ministered to him. There were also many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem.41 as quais já o seguiam e serviam quando ele estava na Galileia, e muitas outras, que, juntamente com ele, tinham subido a Jerusalém.
When it was already evening, since it was the day of preparation, the day before the sabbath,42 Quando era já tarde - pois era a Preparação, isto é, a vigília de sábado - ,
Joseph of Arimathea, a distinguished member of the council, who was himself awaiting the kingdom of God, came and courageously went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.43 foi José de Arimateia, membro ilustre do Sinédrio, que também esperava o reino de Deus, apresentou-se corajosamente a Pilatos, e pediu-lhe o corpo de Jesus.
Pilate was amazed that he was already dead. He summoned the centurion and asked him if Jesus had already died.44 Pilatos admirou-se de que estivesse já morto; mandando chamar o centurião, perguntou-lhe se estava já morto.
And when he learned of it from the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph.45 Informado pelo centurião, deu o corpo a José.
Having bought a linen cloth, he took him down, wrapped him in the linen cloth and laid him in a tomb that had been hewn out of the rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance to the tomb.46 José, tendo comprado um lençol, e tirando-o da cruz, envolveu-o no lençol, depositou-o num sepulcro, que estava aberto na rocha, e rolou uma pedra para diante da boca do sepulcro.
Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses watched where he was laid.47 Entretanto Maria Madalena e Maria, mãe de José, estavam observando onde era depositado.
