NEW AMERICAN BIBLEBIBLIA
She made their affairs prosper through the holy prophet.1 Ella dirigió felizmente sus empresas por medio de un profeta santo.
They journeyed through the uninhabited desert, and in solitudes they pitched their tents;2 Atravesaron un desierto deshabitado y fijaron sus tiendas en parajes inaccesibles;
they withstood enemies and took vengeance on their foes.3 hicieron frente a sus enemigos y rechazaron a sus adversarios.
When they thirsted, they called upon you, and water was given them from the sheer rock, assuagement for their thirst from the hard stone.4 Tuvieron sed y te invocaron: de una roca abrupta se les dio agua, de una piedra dura, remedio para su sed.
For by the things through which their foes were punished they in their need were benefited.5 Lo mismo que fue para sus enemigos un castigo, fue para ellos en su apuro un beneficio.
Instead of a spring, when the perennial river was troubled with impure blood6 En vez de la fuente perenne de un río enturbiado por una mezcla de sangre y barro
as a rebuke to the decree for the slaying of infants, You gave them abundant water in an unhoped-for way,7 en pena de su decreto infanticida, diste a los tuyos inesperadamente un agua abundante,
once you had shown by the thirst they then had how you punished their adversaries.8 mostrándoles por la sed que entonces sufrieron de qué modo habías castigado a sus adversarios.
For when they had been tried, though only mildly chastised, they recognized how the wicked, condemned in anger, were being tormented.9 Pues cuando sufrieron su prueba - si bien con misericordia corregidos - conocieron cómo los impíos, juzgados con cólera, eran torturados;
the latter you tested, admonishing them as a father; the former as a stern king you probed and condemned.10 pues a ellos los habías probado como padre que amonesta, pero a los otros los habías castigado como rey severo que condena.
Both those afar off and those close by were afflicted:11 Tanto estando lejos como cerca, igualmente se consumían,
For a twofold grief took hold of them and a groaning at the remembrance of the ones who had departed.12 pues una doble tristeza se apoderó de ellos, y un lamento con el recuerdo del pasado:
For when they heard that the cause of their own torments was a benefit to these others, they recognized the Lord.13 porque, al oír que lo mismo que era su castigo, era para los otros un beneficio, reconocieron al Señor;
Him who of old had been cast out in exposure they indeed mockingly rejected; but in the end of events, they marveled at him, since their thirst proved unlike that of the just.14 pues al que antes hicieron exponer y luego rechazaron con escarnio, al final de los acontecimientos le admiraron después de padecer una sed bien diferente de la de los justos.
And in return for their senseless, wicked thoughts, which misled them into worshiping dumb serpents and worthless insects, You sent upon them swarms of dumb creatures for vengeance;15 Por sus locos e inicuos pensamientos por los que, extraviados, adoraban reptiles sin razón y bichos despreciables, les enviaste en castigo muchedumbre de animales sin razón,
that they might recognize that a man is punished by the very things through which he sins.16 para que aprendiesen que, por donde uno peca, por allí es castigado.
For not without means was your almighty hand, that had fashioned the universe from formless matter, to send upon them a drove of bears or fierce lions,17 Pues bien podía tu mano omnipotente - ella que de informe materia había creado el mundo - enviar contra ellos muchedumbre de osos o audaces leones,
Or new-created, wrathful, unknown beasts to breathe forth fiery breath, Or pour out roaring smoke, or flash terrible sparks from their eyes.18 o bien fieras desconocidas, entonces creadas, llenas de furor, respirando aliento de fuego, lanzando humo hediondo o despidiendo de sus ojos terribles centellas,
Not only could these attack and completely destroy them; even their frightful appearance itself could slay.19 capaces, no ya de aniquilarlos con sus ataques, sino de destruirlos con sólo su estremecedor aspecto.
Even without these, they could have been killed at a single blast, pursued by retribution and winnowed out by your mighty spirit; But you have disposed all things by measure and number and weight.20 Y aun sin esto, de un simple soplo podían sucumbir, perseguidos por la Justicia, aventados por el soplo de tu poder. Pero tú todo lo dispusiste con medida, número y peso.
For with you great strength abides always; who can resist the might of your arm?21 Pues el actuar con inmenso poder siempre está en tu mano.
But you have mercy on all, because you can do all things; and you overlook the sins of men that they may repent.23 Te compadeces de todos porque todo lo puedes y disimulas los pecados de los hombres para que se arrepientan.
For you love all things that are and loathe nothing that you have made; for what you hated, you would not have fashioned.24 Amas a todos los seres y nada de lo que hiciste aborreces, pues, si algo odiases, no lo habrías hecho.
And how could a thing remain, unless you willed it; or be preserved, had it not been called forth by you?25 Y ¿cómo habría permanecido algo si no hubieses querido? ¿Cómo se habría conservado lo que no hubieses llamado?
But you spare all things, because they are yours, O LORD and lover of souls,26 Mas tú con todas las cosas eres indulgente, porque son tuyas, Señor que amas la vida,
