1 Then spoke Eliphaz the Temanite, who said:	1 Заговорив Еліфаз із Теману й мовив:
2 If someone attempts a word with you, will you mind? For how can anyone refrain from speaking?	2 «І словом нам звернутися до тебе? | Тебе пригнобить, та стримати слова хто зможе?
3 Behold, you have instructed many, and have made firm their feeble hands.	3 Оце навчав ти багатьох, | і скріпляв знеможені руки.
4 Your words have upheld the stumbler; you have strengthened his faltering knees.	4 Хто спотикався, словами ти підводив, | хистким колінам давав сили.
5 But now that it comes to you, you are impatient; when it touches yourself, you are dismayed.	5 Тепер же, як найшло на тебе лихо, ти прибитий! | Торкнулося до тебе, і ти збентеживсь!
6 Is not your piety a source of confidence, and your integrity of life your hope?	6 Твоя побожність, чи не вона ж твоя надія? | Чи ж не твоє вповання — путів твоїх невинність?
7 Reflect now, what innocent person perishes? Since when are the upright destroyed?	7 Згадай лишень, хто гинув, бувши безвинний, | і де праведні бували знищені?
8 As I see it, those who plow for mischief and sow trouble, reap the same.	8 Оскільки сам я бачив: хто орав лихо | й сіяв загибель, той пожинав їх.
9 By the breath of God they perish, and by the blast of his wrath they are consumed.	9 Від Божого подуву вони гинуть, | від подиху гніву його зникають.
10 Though the lion roars, though the king of beasts cries out, yet the teeth of the young lions are broken;	10 Ревіння лева й голос леопарда вмовкає, | і зуби левенят кришаться.
11 The old lion perishes for lack of prey, and the cubs of the lioness are scattered.	11 Лев гине без здобичі | й левенята йдуть урозтіч.
12 For a word was stealthily brought to me, and my ear caught a whisper of it.	12 І надійшло до мене стиха слово, | і я почув ледь-неледь щось із нього,
13 In my thoughts during visions of the night, when deep sleep falls on men,	13 серед примар, нічних привидів, | як на людей находить сон глибокий.
14 Fear came upon me, and shuddering, that terrified me to the bones.	14 Я задрижав і затремтів у страсі, | всі кості мої стряслися,
15 Then a spirit passed before me, and the hair of my flesh stood up.	15 і над моїм обличчям промайнув вітер, | волосся в мене стало дуба.
16 It paused, but its likeness I could not discern; a figure was before my eyes, and I heard a still voice:	16 Став хтось, | виду його я не міг розпізнати, | привид, постать перед очима у мене | і чую тихий голос:
17 "Can a man be righteous as against God? Can a mortal be blameless against his Maker?	17 Чи ж може бути чоловік праведний перед Богом? | Чи може смертний перед своїм Творцем бути чистим?
18 Lo, he puts no trust in his servants, and with his angels he can find fault.	18 Коли і власним слугам він не йме віри | і в ангелів своїх знаходить недоліки,
19 How much more with those that dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, who are crushed more easily than the moth!	19 оскільки ж їх більше в тих, що мешкають у глиняних хатинах, | підвалини яких у поросі; у тих, що їх, неначе міль, давлять.
20 Morning or evening they may be shattered; with no heed paid to it, they perish forever.	20 Між ранком та смерком на порох їх стерто, | і не помітиш, як загинули навіки.
21 The pegs of their tent are plucked up; they die without knowing wisdom."	21 Мотуз від їхнього намету відривають, | і вони вмирають, бо немудрі.»
