1 Then spoke Eliphaz the Temanite, who said:	1 Allora prese la parola Elifaz Temanite, e disse:
2 If someone attempts a word with you, will you mind? For how can anyone refrain from speaking?	2 « Se ci arrischiamo a parlarti, forse te ne avrai a male; ma chi potrebbe rattenere le pensate parole?
3 Behold, you have instructed many, and have made firm their feeble hands.	3 Ecco, fosti maestro di molti, e desti vigore alle mani stanche;
4 Your words have upheld the stumbler; you have strengthened his faltering knees.	4 colle parole sostenesti i vacillanti, e alle ginocchia tremanti desti conforto;
5 But now that it comes to you, you are impatient; when it touches yourself, you are dismayed.	5 ma ora che la sventura è piombata sopra di te, ti accasci, appena ti ha toccato, ti sei perso di coraggio.
6 Is not your piety a source of confidence, and your integrity of life your hope?	6 Dov'è la tua pietà, la tua fortezza, la tua pazienza, la tua condotta intemerata?
7 Reflect now, what innocent person perishes? Since when are the upright destroyed?	7 Rìcorda, te ne prego, qual innocente è mai perito? E quando mai i giusti furono sterminati?
8 As I see it, those who plow for mischief and sow trouble, reap the same.	8 Anzi io ho veduto che coloro i quali arano iniquità, e seminan dolori, poi li mietono:
9 By the breath of God they perish, and by the blast of his wrath they are consumed.	9 ad un soffio di Dio son periti, annientati dall'alito dell'ira sua.
10 Though the lion roars, though the king of beasts cries out, yet the teeth of the young lions are broken;	10 Il ruggito del leone e il grido della leonessa e i denti dei leoncelli furono spezzati;
11 The old lion perishes for lack of prey, and the cubs of the lioness are scattered.	11 il tigre perì per mancanza di preda, e i figli del leone furon dispersi.
12 For a word was stealthily brought to me, and my ear caught a whisper of it.	12 Mi fu detta un'arcana parola; il mio orecchio ne intese quasi furtivamente il lieve sussurro.
13 In my thoughts during visions of the night, when deep sleep falls on men,	13 Nell'orrore d'una visione notturna, quando il sonno suol gravare sugli uomini,
14 Fear came upon me, and shuddering, that terrified me to the bones.	14 fui preso dallo spavento e dal tremito che fece atterrire tutte le mie ossa.
15 Then a spirit passed before me, and the hair of my flesh stood up.	15 Mentre mi passava davanti uno spirito mi si rizzarono i peli della mia carne.
16 It paused, but its likeness I could not discern; a figure was before my eyes, and I heard a still voice:	16 Uno di cui non conosceva il volto mi si fermò dinanzi, come un fantasma davanti ai miei occhi, e sentii una voce come aura lene sussurrare:
17 "Can a man be righteous as against God? Can a mortal be blameless against his Maker?	17 Potrà l'uomo messo a paragone con Dio esser trovato giusto? E sarà egli più puro del suo fattore?
18 Lo, he puts no trust in his servants, and with his angels he can find fault.	18 Ecco, quelli che a lui servono non sono stabili, ed ha trovato anche negli angeli suoi dei difetti:
19 How much more with those that dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, who are crushed more easily than the moth!	19 quanto più quelli che stanno in case di fango ed han per fondamento la polvere e saran consumati come da tignola!
20 Morning or evening they may be shattered; with no heed paid to it, they perish forever.	20 E alla mattina alla sera saran falciati, e senza che nessuno se ne accorga scompariranno in eterno,
21 The pegs of their tent are plucked up; they die without knowing wisdom."	21 e quelli che di essi restano saran portati via, moriranno, e da insensati ».
