DOUAI-RHEIMSNEW JERUSALEM
Now these are David's last words. David the son of Isai said: The man to whom it was appointed concerning the Christ of the God of Jacob, the excellent psalmist of Israel said:1 These are the last words of David: Thus speaks David son of Jesse, thus speaks the man raised toeminence, the anointed of the God of Jacob, the singer of the songs of Israel:
The spirit of the Lord hath spoken by me and his word by my tongue.2 The spirit of Yahweh speaks through me, his word is on my tongue;
The God of Israel said to me, the strong one of Israel spoke, the ruler of men, the just ruler in the fear of God.3 the God of Jacob has spoken, the Rock of Israel has said to me: He whose rule is upright on earth, who rules in the fear of God,
As the light of the morning, when the sun riseth, shineth in the morning without clouds, and as the grass springeth out of the earth by rain.4 is like the morning light at sunrise (on a cloudless morning) making the grass of the earth sparkle afterrain.
Neither is my house so great with God, that he should make with me an eternal covenant, firm in all things and assured. For he is all my salvation, and all my will: neither is there ought thereof that springeth not up.5 Yes, my House stands firm with God: he has made an eternal covenant with me, al in order, welassured; does he not bring to fruition my every victory and desire?
But transgressors shall all of them be plucked up as thorns: which are not taken away with hands.6 But men of Belial he rejects like thorns, for these are never taken up in the hand:
And if a man will touch them, he must be armed with iron and with the staff of a lance: but they shall be set on fire and burnt to nothing.7 no one touches them except with a pitchfork or spear-shaft, and then only to burn them to nothing!
These are the names of the valiant men of David. Jesbaham sitting in the chair was the wisest chief among the three, he was like the most tender little worm of the wood, who killed eight hundred men at one onset.8 These are the names of David's champions: Ishbaal the Hachmonite leader of the Three; it was hewho brandished his spear over eight hundred men whom he had kil ed at one time.
After him was Eleazar the son of Dodo the Ahohite, one of the three valiant men that were with David when they defied the Philistines, and they were there gathered together to battle.9 Next, there was Eleazar son of Dodo, the Ahohite, one of the three champions. He was with David atPas-Dammim when the Philistines mustered for battle there and the men of Israel had disbanded.
And when the men of Israel were gone away, he stood and smote the Philistines till his hand was weary, and grew stiff with the sword: and the Lord wrought a great victory that day: and the people that were fled away, returned to take spoils of them that were slain.10 But he stood his ground and cut down the Philistines until his hand was so stiff that he could not letgo of the sword. Yahweh brought about a great victory that day, and the people rallied behind him, although onlyto plunder.
And after him was Semma the son of Age of Arari. And the Philistines were gathered together in a troop: for there was a field full of lentils. And when the people were fled from the face of the Philistines,11 Next, there was Shamma son of Elah, the Hararite. The Philistines had mustered at Lehi. There wasa field ful of lentils there; the people fled from the Philistines,
He stood in the midst of the field, and defended it, and defeated the Philistines: and the Lord gave a great victory.12 but he took his stand in the middle of the field, held it, and cut down the Philistines; and Yahwehbrought about a great victory.
Moreover also before this the three who were princes among the thirty, went down and came to David in the harvest time into the cave of Odollam: and the camp of the Philistines was in the valley of the giants.13 Three members of the Thirty went down at the beginning of the harvest and came to David at theCave of Adullam while a company of Philistines was encamped in the Val ey of the Rephaim.
And David was then in a hold. and there was a garrison of the Philistines then in Bethlehem.14 David was then in the stronghold, and there was a Philistine garrison in Bethlehem.
And David longed, and said: O that some man would get me a drink of the water out of the cistern, that is in Bethlehem, by the gate.15 Longingly David said, 'If only someone would fetch me a drink of water from the wel that stands bythe gate at Bethlehem!'
And the three valiant men broke through the camp of the Philistines, and drew water out of the cistern of Bethlehem, that was by the gate, and brought it to David: but he would not drink, but offered it to the Lord,16 At this, the three champions, forcing their way through the Philistine camp, drew water from the welthat stands by the gate of Bethlehem and, taking it away, presented it to David. He, however, would not drinkany of it, but poured it out as a libation to Yahweh.
Saying: The Lord be merciful to me, that I may not do this: shall I drink the blood of these men that went, and the peril of their lives? therefore he would not drink. These things did these three mighty men.17 'Yahweh preserve me', he said, 'from doing such a thing! This is the blood of men who went at risk oftheir lives.' That was why he would not drink. Such were the deeds of these three champions.
Abisai also the brother of Joab, the son of Sarvia, was chief among three: and he lifted up his spear against three hundred whom he slew, and he was renowned among the three,18 Abishai, brother of Joab and son of Zeruiah, was leader of the Thirty. It was he who brandished hisspear over three hundred men whom he had kil ed, winning himself a name among the Thirty.
And the noblest of three, and was their chief, but to the three first he attained not.19 He was a most il ustrious member of the Thirty and became their captain, but he was not equal to theThree.
And Banaias the son of Joiada a most valiant man, of great deeds, of Cabseel: he slew the two lions of Moab, and he went down, and slew a lion in the midst of a pit, in the time of snow.20 Benaiah of Kabzeel was the son of Jehoiada and hero of many exploits. He it was who slaughteredtwo formidable Moabites and, one snowy day, climbed down and slaughtered the lion in the storage-wel .
He also slew an Egyptian, a man worthy to be a sight, having a spear in his hand: but he went down to him with a rod, and forced the spear out of the hand of the Egyptian, and slew him with his own spear.21 He also slaughtered an Egyptian of great stature. The Egyptian was armed with a spear, but he tookhim on with a staff, tore the spear from the Egyptian's hand and kil ed the man with it.
These things did Banaias the son of Joiada.22 Such were the exploits of Benaiah son of Jehoiada, winning him a name among the thirty champions.
And he was renowned among the three valiant men, who were the most honourable among the thirty: but he attained riot to the first three: and David made him of his privy council.23 He was a most il ustrious member of the Thirty, but he was not equal to the Three. David put him incommand of his bodyguard.
