DIODATI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 I PROVERBI di Salomone, figliuolo di Davide, Re d’Israele;	1 The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:
2 Per conoscere sapienza ed ammaestramento, Per intendere i detti di senno;	2 for learning what wisdom and discipline are, for understanding words of deep meaning,
3 Per ricevere ammaestramento di buon senno, Di giustizia, di giudicio e di dirittura;	3 for acquiring a disciplined insight, uprightness, justice and fair dealing;
4 Per dare avvedimento a’ semplici. E conoscenza, ed accorgimento a’ fanciulli.	4 for teaching sound judgement to the simple, and knowledge and reflection to the young;
5 Il savio li udirà, e ne accrescerà la sua scienza; E l’uomo intendente ne acquisterà buoni consigli, e governo;	5 Let the wise listen and learn yet more, and a person of discernment wil acquire the art of guidance.
6 Per comprender le sentenze ed i bei motti, Le parole de’ savi ed i lor detti oscuri	6 for perceiving the meaning of proverbs and obscure sayings, the sayings of the sages and their riddles.
7 IL timor del Signore è il capo della scienza; Ma gli stolti sprezzano la sapienza e l’ammaestramento.	7 The fear of Yahweh is the beginning of knowledge; fools spurn wisdom and discipline.
8 Ascolta, figliuol mio l’ammaestramento di tuo padre; E non lasciar l’insegnamento di tua madre;	8 Listen, my child, to your father's instruction, do not reject your mother's teaching:
9 Perciocchè saranno un fregio grazioso al tuo capo, E collane al tuo collo	9 they wil be a crown of grace for your head, a circlet for your neck.
10 Figliuol mio, se i peccatori ti vogliono sedurre, Non acconsentir loro.	10 My child, if sinners try to seduce you, do not go with them.
11 Se dicono: Vieni con noi, poniamo agguati al sangue, Insidiamo di nascosto l’innocente impunitamente;	11 If they say, 'Come with us: let us lie in ambush to shed blood; if we plan an ambush for the innocentwithout provocation,
12 Tranghiottiamoli tutti vivi, come il sepolcro; E tutti intieri, a guisa di quelli che scendono nella fossa;	12 we can swal ow them alive, like Sheol, and whole, like those who sink into oblivion.
13 Noi troveremo ogni sorte di preziosi beni, Noi empieremo le nostre case di spoglie;	13 We shal find treasures of every sort, we shall fil our houses with plunder;
14 Tu trarrai la tua sorte con noi; Fra noi non vi sarà che una sola borsa;	14 throw in your lot with us: one purse between us al .'
15 Figliuol mio, non inviarti con loro; Rattieni il tuo piè dal lor sentiero.	15 My child, do not fol ow them in their way, keep your steps out of their path
16 Perciocchè i lor piedi corrono al male, E si affrettano a spandere il sangue.	16 for their feet hasten to evil, they are quick to shed blood;
17 Perciocchè invano si tende la rete Dinanzi agli occhi d’ogni uccello;	17 for the net is spread in vain if any winged creature can see it.
18 Ma essi pongono agguati al lor proprio sangue, Ed insidiano nascosamente l’anima loro.	18 It is for their own blood such people lie in wait, their ambush is against their own selves!
19 Tali sono i sentieri d’ogni uomo dato all’avarizia; Ella coglie l’anima di coloro in cui ella si trova	19 Such are the paths of al who seek dishonest gain: which robs of their lives al who take it for their own.
20 LA somma Sapienza grida di fuori; Ella fa sentir la sua voce per le piazze;	20 Wisdom cal s aloud in the streets, she raises her voice in the public squares;
21 Ella grida in capo de’ luoghi delle turbe; Ella pronunzia i suoi ragionamenti nell’entrate delle porte, nella città,	21 she cal s out at the street corners, she delivers her message at the city gates.
22 Dicendo: Infino a quando, o scempi, amerete la scempietà? Ed infino a quando gli schernitori prenderanno piacere in ischernire, Ed i pazzi avranno in odio la scienza?	22 'You simple people, how much longer will you cling to your simple ways? How much longer willmockers revel in their mocking and fools go on hating knowledge?
23 Convertitevi alla mia riprensione; Ecco, io vi sgorgherò lo spirito mio; Io vi farò assapere le mie parole.	23 Pay attention to my warning. To you I wil pour out my heart and tel you what I have to say.
24 Perciocchè io ho gridato, e voi avete ricusato di ascoltare; Io ho distesa la mano, e niuno ha porto attenzione;	24 Since I have cal ed and you have refused me, since I have beckoned and no one has taken notice,
25 Ed avete lasciato ogni mio consiglio, E non avete gradita la mia correzione;	25 since you have ignored al my advice and rejected al my warnings,
26 Io altresì riderò della vostra calamità; Io mi farò beffe, quando il vostro spavento sarà venuto;	26 I, for my part, shall laugh at your distress, I shal jeer when terror befal s you,
27 Quando il vostro spavento sarà venuto, a guisa di ruina, E la vostra calamità sarà giunta, a guisa di turbo; Quando angoscia e distretta vi sarà sopraggiunta.	27 when terror befal s you, like a storm, when your distress arrives, like a whirlwind, when ordeal andanguish bear down on you.
28 Allora essi grideranno a me, ma io non risponderò; Mi ricercheranno sollecitamente, ma non mi troveranno;	28 Then they will cal me, but I shal not answer, they wil look eagerly for me and will not find me.
29 Perciocchè hanno odiata la scienza, E non hanno eletto il timor del Signore;	29 They have hated knowledge, they have not chosen the fear of Yahweh,
30 E non hanno gradito il mio consiglio, Ed hanno disdegnata ogni mia correzione.	30 they have taken no notice of my advice, they have spurned al my warnings:
31 Perciò mangeranno del frutto delle lor vie, E saranno saziati de’ lor consigli.	31 so they wil have to eat the fruits of their own ways of life, and choke themselves with their ownscheming.
32 Perciocchè lo sviamento degli scempi li uccide, E l’error degli stolti li fa perire.	32 For the errors of the simple lead to their death, the complacency of fools works their own ruin;
33 Ma chi mi ascolta abiterà in sicurtà, E viverà in riposo, fuor di spavento di male	33 but whoever listens to me may live secure, will have quiet, fearing no mischance.'
