| 1 Aconteceu que, quase um mês depois, Naás Amonita pôs-se em campanha e começou a combater contra Jabes de Galaad. Todos os habitantes de Jabes disseram a Naás: Toma-nos como aliados, e nós te serviremos. | 1 Then Nahash the Ammonite went up and besieged Jabesh-gilead; and all the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, "Make a treaty with us, and we will serve you." |
| 2 Naás Amonita respondeu-lhes: Farei convosco aliança com a condição de vos tirar a todos o olho direito, e fazer isso como opróbrio para todo o Israel. | 2 But Nahash the Ammonite said to them, "On this condition I will make a treaty with you, that I gouge out all your right eyes, and thus put disgrace upon all Israel." |
| 3 Os anciães de Jabes disseram-lhe: Concede-nos sete dias para que enviem os mensageiros por todo o território de Israel; se não houver quem nos defenda, entregar-nos-emos a ti. | 3 The elders of Jabesh said to him, "Give us seven days respite that we may send messengers through all the territory of Israel. Then, if there is no one to save us, we will give ourselves up to you." |
| 4 Foram , pois, os mensageiros a Gabaa, (pátria) de Saul, e referiram estas palavras ao povo, e todo o povo levantou a voz e chorou. | 4 When the messengers came to Gibe-ah of Saul, they reported the matter in the ears of the people; and all the people wept aloud. |
| 5 Saul vinha, então, do campo, atrás dos seus bois, e disse: Que tem o povo que chora? E referiram-lhe as palavras dos habitantes de Jabes. | 5 Now Saul was coming from the field behind the oxen; and Saul said, "What ails the people, that they are weeping?" So they told him the tidings of the men of Jabesh. |
| 6 O espírito do Senhor apoderou-se de Saul, ao ouvir estas palavras, e acendeu-se sobremaneira o seu furor. | 6 And the spirit of God came mightily upon Saul when he heard these words, and his anger was greatly kindled. |
| 7 Tomando os dois bois, fê-los em pedaços e mandou-os por mão de mensageiros a todas as terras de Israel, dizendo: Assim será feito aos bois de todos aqueles que se não puserem em campanha, e que não seguirem Saul e Samuel. O temor do Senhor invadiu o povo, que se pôs em marcha como se fosse um só homem. | 7 He took a yoke of oxen, and cut them in pieces and sent them throughout all the territory of Israel by the hand of messengers, saying, "Whoever does not come out after Saul and Samuel, so shall it be done to his oxen!" Then the dread of the LORD fell upon the people, and they came out as one man. |
| 8 (Saul) passou-lhes revista em Bezec, e encontraram-se trezentos mil homens de Israel, e, dos homens (da tribo) de Judá, trinta mil. | 8 When he mustered them at Bezek, the men of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand. |
| 9 Disseram aos mensageiros que tinham vindo; Direis assim aos habitantes de Jabes de Galaad: Amanhã sereis socorridos, quando o sol estiver na sua força. Foram, pois, os mensageiros e deram a notícia aos habitantes de Jabes, que se alegraram | 9 And they said to the messengers who had come, "Thus shall you say to the men of Jabesh-gilead: Tomorrow, by the time the sun is hot, you shall have deliverance.'" When the messengers came and told the men of Jabesh, they were glad. |
| 10 e disseram (por astúcia, aos seus inimigos): Amanhã nos renderemos a vós, e fareis de nós o que vos parecer. | 10 Therefore the men of Jabesh said, "Tomorrow we will give ourselves up to you, and you may do to us whatever seems good to you." |
| 11 Ao outro dia, pela manhã, Saul dividiu o povo em três partes, e, ao raiar do dia, penetrou no meio do campo (dos Amonitas), e feriu os Amonitas até que o dia aqueceu. Os que escaparam, foram dispersos de tal sorte, que não ficaram dois deles juntos. | 11 And on the morrow Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the midst of the camp in the morning watch, and cut down the Ammonites until the heat of the day; and those who survived were scattered, so that no two of them were left together. |
| 12 O povo disse a Samuel: Quem é que disse: Saul reinará porventura sobre nós? Dai-nos esses homens, e matá-los-emos. | 12 Then the people said to Samuel, "Who is it that said, Shall Saul reign over us?' Bring the men, that we may put them to death." |
| 13 Porém Saul disse: Hoje não se matará ninguém, porque hoje o Senhor salvou Israel. | 13 But Saul said, "Not a man shall be put to death this day, for today the LORD has wrought deliverance in Israel." |
| 14 Samuel disse ao povo: Vinde e vamos a Galgala, e renovemos aí a realeza. | 14 Then Samuel said to the people, "Come, let us go to Gilgal and there renew the kingdom." |
| 15 Partiu, pois, todo o povo para Galgala, e aclamaram ali rei a Saul na presença do Senhor em Galgala, e imolaram ali vítimas pacíficas na presença do Senhor. E Saul e todos os Israelitas alegraram-se ali grandemente. | 15 So all the people went to Gilgal, and there they made Saul king before the LORD in Gilgal. There they sacrificed peace offerings before the LORD, and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly. |
