| 3 não dado ao vinho, nem desordeiro, mas moderado, não litigioso, desapegado do dinheiro, | 3 no drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, and no lover of money. |
| 4 que saiba governar bem a sua casa, que mantenha seus filhos na submissão, com toda a honestidade | 4 He must manage his own household well, keeping his children submissive and respectful in every way; |
| 5 — de facto, se algum não sabe governar a sua casa, como terá cuidado da Igreja de Deus? — | 5 for if a man does not know how to manage his own household, how can he care for God's church? |
| 6 que não seja neófito, a fim de que, inchado de soberba, não venha a cair na (mesma) condenação do demónio (quando caiu do céu). | 6 He must not be a recent convert, or he may be puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil; |
| 7 Importa também que tenha boa reputação entre aqueles que estão fora (da Igreja), para que não caia no opróbrio e no laço do demónio. | 7 moreover he must be well thought of by outsiders, or he may fall into reproach and the snare of the devil. |
| 8 Igualmente os diáconos sejam modestos, não de duas línguas, nem dados a muito vinho, nem ávidos de sórdidos lucros | 8 Deacons likewise must be serious, not double-tongued, not addicted to much wine, not greedy for gain; |
| 9 e conservem o mistério de fé com uma consciência pura. | 9 they must hold the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience. |
| 10 Que estes sejam também provados antes, e, se forem achados irrepreensíveis, sejam admitidos ao ministério do diaconado. | 10 And let them also be tested first; then if they prove themselves blameless let them serve as deacons. |
