| 2 Josué, enviando de Jericó homens contra Hai, que está junto de Betaven, ao nascente da cidade de Betel, disse-lhes: Ide e reconhecei o país. | 3 A o voltarem disseram-lhe: Não suba todo o povo, mas vão só dois ou três mil homens e destruam a cidade; porque se há-de fatigar inùtilmente todo o povo contra tão poucos inimigos? | 3 they returned to Joshua and advised, "Do not send all the people up; if only about two or three thousand go up, they can overcome Ai. The enemy there are few; you need not call for an effort from all the people." |

| 5 foram batidos pelos homens da cidade de Hai, caindo mortos trinta e seis homens; os inimigos perseguiram-nos, desde a porta (de Hai ) até Sabarim, e mataram-nos enquanto fugiam pela encosta; e o coração do povo desmaiou e perdeu toda a coragem. | 5 who killed some thirty-six of them. They pressed them back across the clearing in front of the city gate till they broke ranks, and defeated them finally on the descent, so that the confidence of the people melted away like water. |
| 6 Então Josué rasgou as suas vestes e prostrou-se com o rosto por terra diante da arca do Senhor (e assim esteve) até à tarde, tanto ele como todos os anciãos de Israel, e lançaram cinza sobre as suas cabeças. | 6 Joshua, together with the elders of Israel, rent his garments and lay prostrate before the ark of the LORD until evening; and they threw dust on their heads. |
| 7 Josué disse: Ah! Senhor Javé, porque quiseste que este povo passasse o rio Jordão, para nos entregares nas mãos do Amorreu e para nos perderes? Oxalá nós tivéssemos ficado da outra banda do Jordão, como tínhamos começado. | 7 "Alas, O Lord GOD," Joshua prayed, "why did you ever allow this people to pass over the Jordan, delivering us into the power of the Amorites, that they might destroy us? Would that we had been content to dwell on the other side of the Jordan. |
| 8 Que direi eu, Senhor Deus meu, vendo Israel voltar costas aos seus inimigos? | 8 Pray, Lord, what can I say, now that Israel has turned its back to its enemies? |
| 9 Os Cananeus, e todos os habitantes da terra o ouvirão, e, unindo-se todos, nos cercarão, e apagarão o nosso nome da terra; e que farás tu ao teu grande nome? | 9 When the Canaanites and the other inhabitants of the land hear of it, they will close in around us and efface our name from the earth. What will you do for your great name?" |
| 10 O Senhor disse a Josué: Levanta-te; por que jazes tu prostrado por terra? | 10 The LORD replied to Joshua: "Stand up. Why are you lying prostrate? |
| 11 Israel pecou, a ponto de violar o meu pacto, até tomar das coisas dadas ao anátema, roubá-las, mentir, escondê-las entre as bagagens. | 11 Israel has sinned: they have violated the covenant which I enjoined on them. They have stealthily taken goods subject to the ban, and have deceitfully put them in their baggage. |
| 12 Israel não pode ter-se diante dos seus inimigos, e foge deles, porque se manchou com o anátema; eu não serei mais convosco, enquanto não exterminardes aquele que é réu desta maldade. | 12 If the Israelites cannot stand up to their enemies, but must turn their back to them, it is because they are under the ban. I will not remain with you unless you remove from among you whoever has incurred the ban. |
| 13 Levanta-te, santifica o povo e diz-lhes: Santificai-vos para amanhã, porque isto diz o Senhor Deus de Israel: O anátema está no meio de ti, ó Israel; tu não poderás fazer frente aos teus inimigos, até que seja exterminado do meio de ti o que se acha manchado deste crime. | 13 Rise, sanctify the people. Tell them to sanctify themselves before tomorrow, for the LORD, the God of Israel, says: You are under the ban, O Israel. You cannot stand up to your enemies until you remove from among you whoever has incurred the ban. |
| 14 Amanhã apresentar-vos-eis (diante do Senhor) cada um nas vossas tribos; a tribo sobre que cair a sorte, se apresentará pelas suas tribos, e caiu a sorte sobre a tribo de Judá, suas casas; a casa (sobre que cair a sorte), pelos seus homens. | 14 In the morning you must present yourselves by tribes. The tribe which the LORD designates shall come forward by clans; the clan which the LORD designates shall come forward by families; the family which the LORD designates shall come forward one by one. |
| 15 O que for tomado como atingido pelo anátema será queimado com todas as suas coisas, porque violou o pacto do Senhor, e cometeu uma coisa detestável em Israel. | 15 He who is designated as having incurred the ban shall be destroyed by fire, with all that is his, because he has violated the covenant of the LORD and has committed a shameful crime in Israel." |
| 16 Josué, levantando-se pela manhã, fez juntar Israel pelas suas famílias; a família (sobre que cair a sorte), pelas | 16 Early the next morning Joshua had Israel come forward by tribes, and the tribe of Judah was designated. |
| 17 Tendo-se apresentado esta pelas suas famílias, caiu a sorte sobre a família de Zaré. Apresentando-se também esta pelas suas casas, caiu sobre (a casa de) Zabdi; | 17 Then he had the clans of Judah come forward, and the clan of Zerah was designated. He had the clan of Zerah come forward by families, and Zabdi was designated. |
| 18 sorteados os indivíduos varões desta casa, um por um, descobriu-se ser Achan, filho de Charmi, filho de Zabdi, filho de Zaré, da tribo de Judá. | 18 Finally he had that family come forward one by one, and Achan, son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah of the tribe of Judah, was designated. |
| 19 Josué disse a Achan: Ó meu filho, dá glória ao Senhor Deus de Israel, e confessa-me, declara-me o que fizeste, não o ocultes. | 19 Joshua said to Achan, "My son, give to the LORD, the God of Israel, glory and honor by telling me what you have done; do not hide it from me." |
| 20 Achan respondeu a Josué: Na verdade eu pequei contra o Senhor Deus de Israel. Eis o que fiz: | 20 Achan answered Joshua, "I have indeed sinned against the LORD, the God of Israel. This is what I have done: |
| 21 Vi entre os despojos uma capa de escarlate muito boa, duzentos siclos de prata e uma barra de ouro de cinquenta siclos, e, cobiçando, tirei (estas coisas), escondi-as na terra, no meio da minha tenda, e enterrei o dinheiro numa cova. | 21 Among the spoils, I saw a beautiful Babylonian mantle, two hundred shekels of silver, and a bar of gold fifty shekels in weight; in my greed I took them. They are now hidden in the ground inside my tent, with the silver underneath." |
| 22 Mandou pois Josué investigadores, os quais, correndo à tenda de Achan, acharam tudo escondido no mesmo lugar, e debaixo, o dinheiro. | 22 The messengers whom Joshua sent hastened to the tent and found them hidden there, with the silver underneath. |
| 23 Tirando-o da tenda, levaram-no a Josué e a todos os filhos de Israel, e lançaram-no fora diante do Senhor. | 23 They took them from the tent, brought them to Joshua and all the Israelites, and spread them out before the LORD. |
| 24 Então Josué, e todo o Israel com ele, pegando em Achan, filho de Zaré, e na prata e na capa, e na barra de ouro, e em seus filhos e filhas, nos seus bois, jumentos, ovelhas, na própria tenda, e em tudo quanto tinha, levaram-nos ao vale de Achor, | 24 Then Joshua and all Israel took Achan, son of Zerah, with the silver, the mantle, and the bar of gold, and with his sons and daughters, his ox, his ass and his sheep, his tent, and all his possessions, and led them off to the Valley of Achor. |
| 25 onde Josué disse: Pois que tu nos turbaste, o Senhor te conturbe neste dia. E todo o Israel o apedrejou, e tudo o que lhe pertencia foi consumido no fogo. | 25 Joshua said, "The LORD bring upon you today the misery with which you have afflicted us!" And all Israel stoned him to death |
| 26 E juntaram sobre ele um grande montão de pedras, o qual permanece até ao dia de hoje. (Com isto) apartou-se deles o furor do Senhor. Por isso, até ao dia de hoje, se chama aquele lugar Vale de Achor. | 26 and piled a great heap of stones over him, which remains to the present day. Then the anger of the LORD relented. That is why the place is called the Valley of Achor to this day. |
