| 1 Josué, filho de Nun, enviou secretamente de Setim dois espiões, e disse-lhes: Ide, examinai o país e a cidade de Jericó. Eles partiram e entraram em casa duma meretriz, chamada Baab, e repousaram em sua casa. | 1 Then Joshua, son of Nun, secretly sent out two spies from Shittim, saying, "Go, reconnoiter the land and Jericho." When the two reached Jericho, they went into the house of a harlot named Rahab, where they lodged. |
| 2 E foi dado aviso disso ao rei de Jericó, assim: entraram aqui de noite uns homens dos filhos de Israel, para explorar o país. | 2 But a report was brought to the king of Jericho that some Israelites had come there that night to spy out the land. |
| 3 O rei de Jericó mandou dizer a Raab; Faze sair esses homens, que foram ter contigo e entraram em tua casa, porque são espiões que vieram reconhecer todo o país. | 3 So the king of Jericho sent Rahab the order, "Put out the visitors who have entered your house, for they have come to spy out the entire land." |
| 4 Mas a mulher, tomando os homens, escondeu-os, e disse: Confesso que eles vieram a minha casa, mas eu não sabia donde eram, | 4 The woman had taken the two men and hidden them, so she said, "True, the men you speak of came to me, but I did not know where they came from. |
| 5 e, quando se fechava a porta (da cidade), sendo já escuro, eles saíram ao mesmo tempo, e não sei para onde foram. Ide após eles, depressa, e encontrá-los-eis. | 5 At dark, when it was time for the gate to be shut, they left, and I do not know where they went. You will have to pursue them immediately to overtake them." |
| 6 Ora ela tinha feito subir os homens ao terraço da sua casa e tinha-os coberto com palha de linho, que ali havia. | 6 Now, she had led them to the roof, and hidden them among her stalks of flax spread out there. |
| 7 Os que haviam sido enviados, foram atrás deles pelo caminho que conduz ao vau do Jordão, e, logo que saíram, foi fechada a porta (da cidade). | 7 But the pursuers set out along the way to the fords of the Jordan, and once they had left, the gate was shut. |
| 8 Ainda os homens, que estavam escondidos, não tinham adormecido, quando a mulher subiu junto deles e lhes disse: | 8 Before the spies fell asleep, Rahab came to them on the roof |
| 9 Eu sei que o Senhor vos entregou este país; o terror de vós apoderou-se de nós, e todos os habitantes do pais desanimaram, | 9 and said: "I know that the LORD has given you the land, that a dread of you has come upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land are overcome with fear of you. |
| 10 pois soubemos que o Senhor secou as águas do Mar Vermelho à vossa entrada, quando saistes do Egipto, e (soubemos) o que fizestes aos dois reis dos Amorreus, que estavam da banda de além do Jordão, Seon e Og, os quais matastes. | 10 For we have heard how the LORD dried up the waters of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and how you dealt with Sihon and Og, the two kings of the Amorites beyond the Jordan, whom you doomed to destruction. |
| 11 Quando ouvimos isto, tivemos grande medo, o nosso coração desmaiou e não ficou alento em nós à vossa aproximação; porque o Senhor vosso Deus é o (mesmo) Deus (que reina ) lá em cima no céu, e cá em baixo na terra. | 11 At these reports, we are disheartened; everyone is discouraged because of you, since the LORD, your God, is God in heaven above and on earth below. |
| 12 Agora pois jurai-me pelo Senhor, que, assim como eu usei de misericórdia convosco, assim usareis com a casa de meu pai, e dai-me um sinal seguro | 12 Now then, swear to me by the LORD that, since I am showing kindness to you, you in turn will show kindness to my family; and give me an unmistakable token |
| 13 de que salvareis meu pai e minha mãe, meus irmãos e minhas irmãs, assim como tudo o que lhes pertence, e livrareis as nossas vidas da morte. | 13 that you are to spare my father and mother, brothers and sisters, and all their kin, and save us from death." |
| 14 Eles responderam-lhe: À custa da nossa vida salvaremos a vossa, contanto que tu nos não atraiçoes; quando o Senhor nos entregar este país, usaremos contigo de misericórdia e de fidelidade. | 14 "We pledge our lives for yours," the men answered her. "If you do not betray this errand of ours, we will be faithful in showing kindness to you when the LORD gives us the land." |
| 15 Ela os fez descer da janela por uma corda, porque a sua casa estava pegada ao muro (da cidade). | 15 Then she let them down through the window with a rope; for she lived in a house built into the city wall. |
| 16 Disse-lhes: Ide para o monte, não suceda que eles vos encontrem, quando voltarem, e deixai-vos lá estar escondidos durante três dias, até que eles voltem, e depois tomareis o vosso caminho. | 16 "Go up into the hill country," she suggested to them, "that your pursuers may not find you. Hide there for three days, until they return; then you may proceed on your way." |
| 17 Eles disseram-lhes: Nós cumpriremos fielmente o juramento, que nos fizeste prestar, | 17 The men answered her, "This is how we will fulfill the oath you made us take: |
| 18 se, quando entrarmos no país, estiver como sinal este cordão cor de escarlate, e o atares à janela, por onde nos fizeste descer, e se tiveres recolhido, em tua casa, o teu pai, a tua mãe, os teus irmãos e toda a tua parentela. | 18 When we come into the land, tie this scarlet cord in the window through which you are letting us down; and gather your father and mother, your brothers and all your family into your house. |
| 19 Se alguém sair da porta da tua casa, o seu sangue cairá sobre a sua cabeça, e nós ficaremos sem culpa; mas o sangue de todos os que estiverem contigo em tua casa cairá sobre a nossa cabeça, se alguém os tocar. | 19 Should any of them pass outside the doors of your house, he will be responsible for his own death, and we shall be guiltless. But we shall be responsible if anyone in the house with you is harmed. |
| 20 Porém, se tu nos atraiçoares, e publicares isto que te dizemos, ficaremos desobrigados deste juramento, que nos fizeste prestar. | 20 If, however, you betray this errand of ours, we shall be quit of the oath you have made us take." |
| 21 Ela respondeu: Faça-se como dissestes. Depois os despediu e eles partiram; (então) pendurou o cordão cor de escarlate à janela. | 21 "Let it be as you say," she replied, and bade them farewell. When they were gone, she tied the scarlet cord in the window. |
| 22 Eles, andando, chegaram ao monte, e lá permaneceram durante três dias, até que voltaram os que tinham ido em seu seguimento. Estes, tendo buscado por todo o caminho (os espiões), não os encontraram. | 22 They went up into the hills, where they stayed three days until their pursuers, who had sought them all along the road without finding them, returned. |
| 23 (Então) os espiões deram volta, e, tendo descido do monte e passado o Jordão, chegaram a Josué, filho de Nun, e contaram-lhe tudo o que lhes tinha acontecido, | 23 Then the two came back down from the hills, crossed the Jordan to Joshua, son of Nun, and reported all that had befallen them. |
| 24 dizendo: O Senhor entregou todo este país nas nossas mãos, pois os seus habitantes estão consternados de medo. | 24 They assured Joshua, "The LORD has delivered all this land into our power; indeed, all the inhabitants of the land are overcome with fear of us." |
