| 2 Se alguém se lisonjeia de saber alguma coisa, este ainda não conheceu de que modo se deve saber. | 2 Someone may think that he has ful knowledge of something and yet not know it as wel as he should; |
| 3 Mas, se alguém ama a Deus, esse é conhecido dele. | 3 but someone who loves God is known by God. |
| 4 Quanto, pois, a comer carnes imoladas aos ídolos, sabemos que o ídolo não é nada no mundo e que não há outro Deus, senão o Deus único. | 4 On the subject of eating foods dedicated to false gods, we are wel aware that none of the false godsexists in reality and that there is no God other than the One. |
| 5 De facto, ainda que haja alguns que se chamem deuses, ou no céu ou na terra (e assim sejam muitos os deuses e muitos os senhores), | 5 Though there are so-cal ed gods, in the heavens or on earth -- and there are plenty of gods and plentyof lords- |
| 6 para nós, contudo, há um só Deus, o Pai, de quem provêm todas as coisas, e para quem existimos, e um só Senhor, Jesus Cristo, por quem todas as coisas foram feitas, e nós também. | 6 yet for us there is only one God, the Father from whom al things come and for whom we exist, and oneLord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things come and through whom we exist. |
| 7 Mas nem em todos há a ciência, porque alguns, conservando ainda o seu antigo modo de considerar o ídolo, comem como do sacrificado a ídolo, e a consciência destes, estando enferma, fica contaminada. | 7 However, not everybody has this knowledge. There are some in whose consciences false gods stillplay such a part that they take the food as though it had been dedicated to a god; then their conscience, beingvulnerable, is defiled, |
| 8 Um alimento não (é coisa que) nos torna recomendáveis a Deus, visto que, nem comendo, teremos a mais alguma coisa, nem teremos alguma coisa a menos, não comendo. | 8 But of course food cannot make us acceptable to God; we lose nothing by not eating it, we gain nothingby eating it. |
| 9 Mas vede que esta liberdade que tendes não se torne ocasião de queda para os fracos. | 9 Only be careful that this freedom of yours does not in any way turn into an obstacle to trip those whoare vulnerable. |
| 10 Com efeito, se algum te vir a ti, que tens ciência, estar à mesa no templo idolátrico, porventura, com a sua consciência, que está enferma, não se animará a comer da carne sacrificada aos ídolos (que julga ser impura)? | 10 Suppose someone sees you, who have the knowledge, sitting eating in the temple of some false god,do you not think that his conscience, vulnerable as it is, may be encouraged to eat foods dedicated to falsegods? |
| 11 E pela tua ciência perecerá o irmão fraco, pelo qual morreu Cristo! | 11 And then it would be through your knowledge that this brother for whom Christ died, vulnerable as heis, has been lost. |
| 12 Deste modo, pecando contra os irmãos e ofendendo a sua débil consciência, pecais contra Cristo. | 12 So, sinning against your brothers and wounding their vulnerable consciences, you would be sinningagainst Christ. |
| 13 Pelo que, se um alimento serve de escândalo a meu irmão, jamais comerei carne, para não escandalizar o meu irmão. | 13 That is why, if food can be the cause of a brother's downfal , I wil never eat meat any more, ratherthan cause my brother's downfal . |
