| 1 Agripa disse, pois, a Paulo: "É-te permitido falar em tua defesa." Então Paulo, estendendo a mão, começou a justificar-se. | 1 Agrippa said to Paul, "You have permission to speak for yourself." Then Paul stretched out his hand and made his defense: |
| 2 "Considero-me feliz por ter hoje de me justificar na tua presença, ó rei Agripa, de tudo quanto me acusam os Judeus, | 2 "I think myself fortunate that it is before you, King Agrippa, I am to make my defense today against all the accusations of the Jews, |
| 3 principalmente porque conheces todos os costumes e questões que há entre os Judeus; por isso peço-te que me ouças com paciência. | 3 because you are especially familiar with all customs and controversies of the Jews; therefore I beg you to listen to me patiently. |
| 4 Quanto à vida que tenho levado, desde os primeiros tempos da mocidade, entre os da minha nação, em Jerusalém, ela é conhecida de todos os Judeus. | 4 "My manner of life from my youth, spent from the beginning among my own nation and at Jerusalem, is known by all the Jews. |
| 5 Conhecendo-me desde os meus princípios, podem, se quiserem, dar testemunho de que vivi fariseu, segundo a seita mais rigorosa da nossa religião. | 5 They have known for a long time, if they are willing to testify, that according to the strictest party of our religion I have lived as a Pharisee. |
| 6 Agora sou acusado em juízo por esperar a promessa que foi feita por Deus a nossos pais, | 6 And now I stand here on trial for hope in the promise made by God to our fathers, |
| 7 a qual (promessa) as nossas doze tribos, servindo a Deus de noite e de dia, esperam ver cumprida. Por causa desta esperança, ó rei, sou acusado pelos Judeus. | 7 to which our twelve tribes hope to attain, as they earnestly worship night and day. And for this hope I am accused by Jews, O king! |
| 8 Parece-vos porventura incrível que Deus ressuscite os mortos? | 8 Why is it thought incredible by any of you that God raises the dead? |
| 9 Eu também tinha julgado que devia fazer a maior resistência contra o nome de Jesus Nazareno. | 9 "I myself was convinced that I ought to do many things in opposing the name of Jesus of Nazareth. |
| 10 E assim o fiz em Jerusalém. Encerrei em cárceres muitos santos, tendo recebido, para isso, poder dos príncipes dos sacerdotes, e, quando os faziam morrer, dava o meu voto. | 10 And I did so in Jerusalem; I not only shut up many of the saints in prison, by authority from the chief priests, but when they were put to death I cast my vote against them. |
| 11 Muitas vezes, percorrendo as sinagogas, usava com eles de crueldade, obrigando-os a blasfemar; e, enfurecendo-me mais e mais contra eles, perseguia-os até nas cidades estrangeiras. | 11 And I punished them often in all the synagogues and tried to make them blaspheme; and in raging fury against them, I persecuted them even to foreign cities. |
| 12 Levado por tais intuitos, indo eu a Damasco com poder e comissão dos príncipes dos sacerdotes, | 12 "Thus I journeyed to Damascus with the authority and commission of the chief priests. |
| 13 ao meio-dia vi, ó rei, no caminho, uma luz do céu, mais resplandecente que o sol, a qual brilhou em volta de mim e dos que iam comigo. | 13 At midday, O king, I saw on the way a light from heaven, brighter than the sun, shining round me and those who journeyed with me. |
| 14 Tendo todos nós caído por terra, ouvi uma voz que me dizia em língua hebraica: Saulo, Saulo, por que me persegües? Dura coisa te é recaleitrar contra o aguilhão. | 14 And when we had all fallen to the ground, I heard a voice saying to me in the Hebrew language, 'Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me? It hurts you to kick against the goads.' |
| 15 Então eu disse: Quem és tu Senhor? E o Senhor respondeu: Eu sou Jesus, a quem tu persegües. | 15 And I said, 'Who are you, Lord?' And the Lord said, 'I am Jesus whom you are persecuting. |
| 16 Mas levanta-te e põe-te em pé, porque eu te apareci para te constituir servidor e testemunha das coisas que viste e daquelas pelas quais eu te aparecerei ainda (muitas vezes), | 16 But rise and stand upon your feet; for I have appeared to you for this purpose, to appoint you to serve and bear witness to the things in which you have seen me and to those in which I will appear to you, |
| 17 livrando-te deste povo e dos gentios, aos quais agora te envio | 17 delivering you from the people and from the Gentiles--to whom I send you |
| 18 a abrir-lhes os olhos, a fim de que se convertam das trevas à luz, e do poder de Satanás a Deus, para que recebam o perdão dos pecados e a herança entre os santos, mediante a fé em mim. | 18 to open their eyes, that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.' |
| 19 Por isso, ó rei Agripa, não fui rebelde à visão celeste, | 19 "Wherefore, O King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision, |
| 20 mas preguei primeiramente aos de Damasco, depois em Jerusalém e por toda a terra da Judeia e aos gentios, que se arrependessem e convertessem a Deus, fazendo dignas obras de penitência. | 20 but declared first to those at Damascus, then at Jerusalem and throughout all the country of Judea, and also to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God and perform deeds worthy of their repentance. |
| 21 Por esta causa os Judeus, tendo-me prendido, estando eu no templo, tentavam matar-me. | 21 For this reason the Jews seized me in the temple and tried to kill me. |
| 22 Mas, graças ao socorro de Deus, que até ao dia de hoje me não faltou, contínuo a dar testemunho a pequenos e a grandes, não dizendo outras coisas fora daquelas que anunciaram os profetas e Moisés que haviam de acontecer, | 22 To this day I have had the help that comes from God, and so I stand here testifying both to small and great, saying nothing but what the prophets and Moses said would come to pass: |
| 23 que o Cristo havia de padecer, que seria o primeiro a ressuscitar dos mortos e que anunciaria a luz a este povo e aos gentios." | 23 that the Christ must suffer, and that, by being the first to rise from the dead, he would proclaim light both to the people and to the Gentiles." |
| 24 Dizendo ele estas coisas em sua defesa, disse Festo em alta voz: "Estás louco, Paulo; o muito saber desorienta o teu espírito." | 24 And as he thus made his defense, Festus said with a loud voice, "Paul, you are mad; your great learning is turning you mad." |
| 25 Paulo respondeu: "Eu não estou louco, ó óptimo Festo, mas digo palavras de verdade e de sabedoria. | 25 But Paul said, "I am not mad, most excellent Festus, but I am speaking the sober truth. |
| 26 Destas coisas tem conhecimento o rei, a quem falo com toda a liberdade, pois creio que nada disto lhe é desconhecido, porque nenhuma destas coisas se passou a um canto. | 26 For the king knows about these things, and to him I speak freely; for I am persuaded that none of these things has escaped his notice, for this was not done in a corner. |
| 27 Crês, ó rei Agripa, nos profetas? Eu sei que crês." | 27 King Agrippa, do you believe the prophets? I know that you believe." |
| 28 Então Agripa disse a Paulo: "Por pouco me não persuades a fazer-me cristão." | 28 And Agrippa said to Paul, "In a short time you think to make me a Christian!" |
| 29 Paulo disse-lhe: "Prouvera a Deus que, por pouco ou por muito, não sòmente tu, mas também todos quantos me ouvem, se fizessem hoje tais como eu sou, menos estes grilhões. | 29 And Paul said, "Whether short or long, I would to God that not only you but also all who hear me this day might become such as I am--except for these chains." |
| 30 Então levantou-se o rei, o governador e Berenice e os que estavam sentados com eles. | 30 Then the king rose, and the governor and Bernice and those who were sitting with them; |
| 31 Tendo-se retirado à parte diziam entre si: "Este homem não fez coisa que seja digna de morte nem de prisão." | 31 and when they had withdrawn, they said to one another, "This man is doing nothing to deserve death or imprisonment." |
| 32 E Agripa disse a Festo. "Ele podia ser solto, se não tivesse apelado para César." | 32 And Agrippa said to Festus, "This man could have been set free if he had not appealed to Caesar." |
