| 2 Depois de ter percorrido aquelas regiões e de ter feito muitas exortações, passou à Grécia, | 2 On his way through those areas he said many words of encouragement to them and then made hisway into Greece, |
| 3 onde se demorou três meses. Quando se dispunha a navegar para a Síria, foram-lhe armadas ciladas pelos Judeus, e, por isso, tomou a resolução de voltar pela Macedônia. | 3 where he spent three months. He was leaving by ship for Syria when a plot organised against him bythe Jews made him decide to go back by way of Macedonia. |
| 4 Acompanharam-no Sopatro, filho de Pirro, de Bereia; Aristarco e Secundo, de Tessalonica; Gaio, de Derbe, e Timóteo; e dos asiáticos (acompanharam-no) Tíquito e Trofimo. | 4 He was accompanied by Sopater, son of Pyrrhus, who came from Beroea; Aristarchus and Secunduswho came from Thessalonica; Gaius from Derbe, and Timothy, as well as Tychicus and Trophimus who werefrom Asia. |
| 5 Estes, tendo partido adiante, esperaram-nos em Tróade. | 5 They al went on to Troas where they waited for us. |

Prolongou o discurso até à meia-noite. | 7 On the first day of the week we met for the breaking of bread. Paul was due to leave the next day, andhe preached a sermon that went on til the middle of the night. |
| 8 Havia muitas lâmpadas na sala superior, onde estávamos reunidos. | 8 A number of lamps were lit in the upstairs room where we were assembled, |
| 9 Ora um jovem, chamado Eutico, que estava sentado sobre o peitoril da janela, num profundo sono, enquanto Paulo ia prolongando o seu discurso; vencido pelo sono, caiu abaixo do terceiro andar da casa e foi levantado morto. | 9 and as Paul went on and on, a young man called Eutychus who was sitting on the window-sil grewdrowsy and was overcome by sleep and fel to the ground three floors below. He was picked up dead. |
| 10 Paulo, tendo descido, recostou-se sobre ele, tomou-o nos braços e disse: "Não vos perturbeis, porque ele ainda está vivo." | 10 Paul went down and stooped to clasp the boy to him, saying, 'There is no need to worry, there is stillife in him.' |
| 11 Tendo voltado acima e partido o pão e comido, ainda lhes falou largamente, até que surgiu a aurora; depois disto partiu. | 11 Then he went back upstairs where he broke the bread and ate and carried on talking til he left atdaybreak. |
| 12 Levaram vivo o jovem, do que receberam grande consolação. | 12 They took the boy away alive, and were greatly encouraged. |
| 13 Nós, porém, embarcando num navio, navegámos até Asso, para recebermos ali Paulo, pois assim o tinha ordenado, devendo ele fazer a viagem por terra. | 13 We were now to go on ahead by sea, so we set sail for Assos, where we were to take Paul on board;this was what he had arranged, for he wanted to go overland. |
| 14 Tendo-se juntado connosco em Asso, depois de o tomarmos a bordo, fomos a Mitilene. | 14 When he rejoined us at Assos we took him aboard and went on to Mitylene. |
| 15 Continuando dali a navegar, chegámos, no dia seguinte, às alturas de Quio; no outro dia, aportámos em Samos, e, no seguinte, chegámos a Mileto; | 15 The next day we sailed from there and arrived opposite Chios. The second day we touched at Samosand, after stopping at Trogyllium, made Miletus the next day. |
| 16 Com efeito, Paulo tinha determinado passar ao largo de Éfeso, para se não demorar na Ásia. Apressava-se, pois, para estar em Jerusalém, se possível lhe fosse, no dia de Pentecostes. | 16 Paul had decided to pass wide of Ephesus so as to avoid spending time in Asia, since he wasanxious to be in Jerusalem, if possible, for the day of Pentecost. |
| 17 De Mileto mandou a Éfeso chamar os anciães da Igreja. | 17 From Miletus he sent for the elders of the church of Ephesus. |
| 18 Indo estes ter com ele, disse-lhes: "Sabeis, desde o primeiro dia que entrei na Ásia, de que modo tenho procedido convosco durante todo este tempo, | 18 When they arrived he addressed these words to them: 'You know what my way of life has been eversince the first day I set foot among you in Asia, |
| 19 servindo o Senhor com toda a humildade, entre as lágrimas e as provações que me sobrevieram das maquinações dos Judeus. | 19 how I have served the Lord in al humility, with al the sorrows and trials that came to me through theplots of the Jews. |
| 20 Sabeis que nada tenho negligenciado do que podia ser-vos útil, pregando-vos e instruindo-vos publicamente, e pelas casas, | 20 I have not hesitated to do anything that would be helpful to you; I have preached to you and instructedyou both in public and in your homes, |
| 21 anunciando aos Judeus e aos gentios a conversão a Deus e a fé em Nosso Senhor Jesus. | 21 urging both Jews and Greeks to turn to God and to believe in our Lord Jesus. |
| 22 E agora, impelido pelo Espírito, vou a Jerusalém, não sabendo as coisas que ali me hão-de acontecer, | 22 'And now you see me on my way to Jerusalem in captivity to the Spirit; I have no idea what wilhappen to me there, |
| 23 senão que o Espirito Santo, por todas as cidades, me assegura e diz que me esperam em Jerusalém prisões e tribulações. | 23 except that the Holy Spirit, in town after town, has made it clear to me that imprisonment andpersecution await me. |
| 24 Porém, de qualquer modo, a minha vida importa-me pouco, contanto que termine a minha carreira e a missão que recebi do Senhor Jesus de dar testemunho ao Evangelho da graça de Deus. | 24 But I do not place any value on my own life, provided that I complete the mission the Lord Jesus gaveme -- to bear witness to the good news of God's grace. |
| 25 Agora eis que sei que não tomareis mais a ver a minha face todos vós, entre os quais passei pregando o reino (de Deus). | 25 'I now feel sure that none of you among whom I have gone about proclaiming the kingdom wil eversee my face again. |
| 26 Por isso eu vos protesto, neste dia, que estou limpo do sangue de todos, | 26 And so on this very day I swear that my conscience is clear as far as all of you are concerned, |
| 27 porque não me esquivei a anunciar-vos todas as disposições de Deus. | 27 for I have without faltering put before you the whole of God's purpose. |
| 28 Atendei a vós mesmos e a todo o rebanho, sobre que o Espírito Santo vos constituiu bispos, para governardes a Igreja de Deus, que ele adquiriu com o seu próprio sangue. | 28 'Be on your guard for yourselves and for all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you theguardians, to feed the Church of God which he bought with the blood of his own Son. |
| 29 Eu sei que, depois da minha partida, se introduzirão entre vós, lobos arrebatadores, que não pouparão o rebanho. | 29 'I know quite wel that when I have gone fierce wolves wil invade you and will have no mercy on theflock. |
| 30 E de entre vós mesmos hão-de levantar-se homens a ensinar doutrinas perversas, que tentarão levar atrás de si discípulos. | 30 Even from your own ranks there wil be men coming forward with a travesty of the truth on their lips toinduce the disciples to fol ow them. |
| 31 Por isso estai vigilantes, lembrando-vos que, durante três anos, não cessei, de noite e de dia, de admoestar com lágrimas a cada um de vós. | 31 So be on your guard, remembering how night and day for three years I never slackened in counsel ingeach one of you with tears. |
| 32 Agora encomendo-vos a Deus e à palavra da sua graça, àquele que é poderoso para edificar e dar-vos a herança com todos os santificados. | 32 And now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace that has power to build you up and togive you your inheritance among all the sanctified. |
| 33 Não cobicei prata, nem ouro, nem vestes de ninguém, | 33 'I have never asked anyone for money or clothes; |
| 34 como vós mesmos sabeis, porque estas mãos me serviram para as coisas que me eram necessárias a mim e àqueles que comigo estavam. | 34 you know for yourselves that these hands of mine earned enough to meet my needs and those of mycompanions. |
| 35 Em tudo vos mostrei que, trabalhando assim, é preciso acudir aos fracos, e lembrar-se das palavras do Senhor Jesus, porquanto ele mesmo disse: "É maior ventura dar, que receber." | 35 By every means I have shown you that we must exert ourselves in this way to support the weak,remembering the words of the Lord Jesus, who himself said, "There is more happiness in giving than inreceiving." ' |
| 36 Dito isto, pôs-se de joelhos e orou com todos eles. | 36 When he had finished speaking he knelt down with them all and prayed. |
| 37 Levantou-se entre todos um grande pranto, e, lançando-se ao pescoço de Paulo, o abraçavam, | 37 By now they were all in tears; they put their arms round Paul's neck and kissed him; |
| 38 aflitos principalmente pela palavra que tinha dito que não tornariam mais a ver a sua face. Em seguida acompanharam-no até ao navio. | 38 what saddened them most was his saying they would never see his face again. Then they escortedhim to the ship. |
