| 1 Quando na terra, que o Senhor teu Deus te há-de dar, for encontrado o cadáver dum homem (que foi) morto, e se ignorar (quem é) o réu do homicídio, | 1 'If, in the country which Yahweh your God gives you as your possession, a victim of murder is foundlying in the open country and it is not known who has kil ed that person, |
| 2 sairão os anciães e os teus juízes, e medirão o espaço que vai desde onde está o cadáver até cada cidade do contorno: | 2 your elders and scribes must measure the distance between the victim and the surrounding towns, |
| 3 tendo conhecido (qual é) a mais vizinha de todas, os anciães dessa cidade tomarão da manada uma novilha, que não tenha ainda levado jugo, nem fendido a terra com o arado, | 3 and establish which town is the nearest to the victim. The elders of that town must then take a heiferthat has not yet been put to work or used as a draught animal under the yoke. |
| 4 e conduzi-la-ão a um vale áspero e pedregoso, que nunca tenha sido lavrado nem semeado, e aí cortarão o pescoço à novilha. | 4 The elders of that town must bring the heifer down to a permanently flowing river, to a spot that hasbeen neither ploughed nor sown, and there by the river they must break the heifer's neck. |
| 5 Aproximar-se-ão os sacerdotes filhos de Levi porque o Senhor teu Deus os escolheu para serem seus ministros, para abençoarem em seu nome, e para que, por decisão deles, se julgue toda a causa, e toda a percussão. | 5 The priests, the sons of Levi, wil then step forward, these being the men whom Yahweh your God haschosen to serve him and to bless in Yahweh's name, and it being their business to settle al cases of dispute orof violence. |
| 6 Os anciães daquela cidade irão junto do morto, e lavarão as suas mãos sobre a novilha que foi morta no vale. | 6 Al the elders of the town nearest to the victim of murder must then wash their hands in the stream,over the slaughtered heifer. |
| 7 Depois dirão: As nossas mãos não derramaram este sangue, nem os nossos olhos viram. | 7 They must pronounce these words, "Our hands have not shed this blood and our eyes have seennothing. |
| 8 Sê propício ao teu povo de Israel, que tu, ó Senhor, remiste, e não lhe imputes o sangue inocente (derramado) no meio do teu povo de Israel. Assim será tirado o reato deste sangue, | 8 O Yahweh, forgive your people Israel whom you have redeemed, and let no innocent blood be shedamong your people Israel. May this bloodshed be forgiven them!" |
| 9 e tu não ficarás responsável pelo sangue do inocente, que foi derramado, quando tiveres feito o que o Senhor mandou. | 9 You must banish all shedding of innocent blood from among you, if you mean to do what is right in theeyes of Yahweh. |
| 10 Se saíres a pelejar contra os teus inimigos, e o Senhor teu Deus os entregar nas tuas mãos, se os fizeres cativos | 10 'When you go to war against your enemies and Yahweh your God delivers them into your power andyou take prisoners, |
| 11 e vires entre o número dos prisioneiros uma mulher formosa, e enamorado dela, a quiseres ter por esposa | 11 and among the prisoners you see a beautiful woman, and you fal in love with her, and you take herto be your wife |
| 12 conduzi-la-ás a tua casa, ela rapará os cabelos, cortará as unhas, | 12 and bring her home; she must shave her head and cut her nails, |
| 13 deporá o vestido com que foi aprisionada, e, ficando sentada em tua casa, chorará seu pai e sua mãe durante um mês; depois a tomarás para ti, dormirás com ela, será tua mulher. | 13 and take off her prisoner's garb; she must stay inside your house and mourn her father and motherfor a full month. You may then go to her and be a husband to her, and she wil be your wife. |
| 14 Se, porém, depois ela não agradar ao teu coração, deixá-la-ás livre, não a poderás vender por dinheiro, nem oprimir com o teu poder, visto que a humilhaste. | 14 Should she cease to please you, you wil let her go where she wishes, not sel ing her for money: youmust not make any profit out of her, since you have exploited her. |
| 15 Se um homem possuir duas mulheres, uma a quem ama, outra a quem aborrece, e tiverem (ambas) tido filhos dele, se o filho da que ele aborrece for o primogênito, | 15 'If a man has two wives, one loved and the other unloved, and the loved one and the unloved bothbear him children, and if the first-born son is of the unloved wife, |
| 16 quando esse homem quiser repartir os seus bens entre os seus filhos, não poderá fazer (seu) primogênito o filho daquela que ele ama, e preferi-lo ao filho da que ele aborrece, | 16 when the man comes to bequeath his goods to his sons, he may not treat the son of the wife whomhe loves as the first-born, at the expense of the son of the wife whom he does not love, the true first-born. |
| 17 mas reconhecerá por primogênito o filho da que ele aborrece, dar-lhe-á uma porção dupla de tudo o que tem, porque este é o primeiro de seus filhos, a ele pertence o direito da primogênitura. | 17 As his first-born he must acknowledge the son of the wife whom he does not love, giving him adouble share of his estate; this son being the first-fruit of his vigour, the right of the first-born is his. |
| 18 Se um homem tiver gerado um filho rebelde e contumaz, que não atende às ordens do pai ou da mãe e que, mesmo castigado, não quer obedecer, | 18 'If a man has a stubborn and rebel ious son who wil not listen to the voice either of his father or of hismother and, even when they punish him, still wil not pay attention to them, |
| 19 seu pai e sua mãe pegarão nele e o conduzirão aos anciães daquela cidade à porta do juízo, | 19 his father and mother must take hold of him and bring him out to the elders of his town at the gate ofthat place. |
| 20 e Ihes dirão: Este nosso filho é um rebelde e contumaz, despreza ouvir as nossas admoestações, passa a vida na embriaguez e na dissolução. | 20 To the elders of his town, they wil say, "This son of ours is stubborn and rebel ious and will not listento us; he is a wastrel and a drunkard." |
| 21 O povo da cidade o apedrejará, e ele morrerá, para que tireis o mal do meio de vós, e todo o Israel, ouvido isto, tema. | 21 Al his fel ow-citizens must then stone him to death. You must banish this evil from among you. AlIsrael, hearing of this, wil be afraid. |
| 22 Quando um homem tiver cometido um crime que deve ser punido com a morte, e, condenado à morte, for pendurado no patíbulo, | 22 'If a man guilty of a capital offence is to be put to death, and you hang him from a tree, |
| 23 o seu cadáver não ficará no lenho, mas será sepultado no mesmo dia, porque é maldito de Deus aquele que está pendente do lenho, e tu, de nenhuma sorte, contaminarás a terra que o Senhor teu Deus te der por herança. | 23 his body must not remain on the tree overnight; you must bury him the same day, since anyonehanged is a curse of God, and you must not bring pollution on the soil which Yahweh your God is giving you asyour heritage.' |
